Hi all. Requesting feedback on my chances at a Reserves or Guard unit, and currently considering both fighters and heavies. AFOQT: Pilot 89 / Nav 98 / Acad Apt 95 / Verbal 94 / Quant 92 PCSM: 89 (with another 12 hours, this should bump up to 93, so I plan on getting those additional hours shortly) Flying: PPL, 88 hours, will start working towards instrument soon GPA: 3.57 (BA Economics), Also have master’s Prior Service: Previous active duty USAF officer (4 years, O3) in Contracting, deployed once (Baghdad) Age: 33 (turned 33 in Jan) LORs: 1 from previous squadron commander, 1 from coworker, 1 from good friend. I believe all are strong…

I have been studying for AQOFT but have not taken yet due to family/work. I am doing pretty well on subtests but the math/arithmetic is where I need the most improvement. One of the squadrons I am interested in is hiring for UPT that has an early November deadline for applications. I am not sure if I can get enough practice done in time to take the tests and still submit the application in time. The problem is my age (now 29) and they do not hire above 30. Would I be better off just waiting it out another month or two and likely improving my scores and just let this chance with this squadron go? Another squadron I am interested in will be accepting application a…

About me: 30 yrs old, bachelor's 3.79, ivy League masters 3.81, OTS completed, 100s on all four PT tests. I joined the reserves IMA chaplain program in 2021. I haven't taken any air force aptitude tests. I'm an O-2 currently with Captain in the near future if I stay. Just curious if there's any chance I could cross over to pilot from my AFSC 92R or if I would have to resign and then try to come back in through the civilian route. I'm trying to go active duty from the reserves and the chaplain corps is getting in the way of that. I feel a sense of responsibility to try to be a pilot if I have the ability to do so. Any guidance would be appreciated.

I'm a 34F. I took the AFOQT once rather last minute without having time to study, so plan to take it again this year (Pilot 91/CSO 75/ABM 92/ Acad 64/Verbal 86/Quant 41). I'm open to ANG, Reserve and AD. I know I need an age waiver/ETP. I have 16.5 flight hours and have soloed, but no PPL, and no real way to finance one since I'm still working on my degree (B.S. Aeronautics). Will be taking the TBAS soon as part of the AD process. I'm currently working on my AD app for next year's rated board. I'm watching Milrecruiter, though fighter squadron selection boards are now few and far between. One of my biggest obstacles to the ANG route is that I run a business for my li…

Last year (2010) I got into some trouble with the AF. Underage drinking. I was 20 years old, an E3. It happened off base, and it was later thrown out in court. The following duty day after it happened, I went to my first shirt and told her what happened. The commander and stuff got involved, but in the end all I got was an LOR. I wrote a rebuttal (which my shop chief read just today, and gave me props to how well written it was) and pretty much just told my commander what happened. I was at a nearby college, and wanted to make some friends, so I had a few drinks. At the end of the night I realized that I was NOT okay to drive, so I slept in my car, and a police officer fo…

Hello everyone, I'm submitting an application for the upcoming AD rated board. I've asked my recruiter what her thoughts are on my standing, but more opinions would be nice. 27 years old, Bachelors of Journalism from University of Oregon - 3.42 GPA PCSM - 85; Pilot - 97; Nav - 97; ABM - 96 (Don't have copy of other scores, I think they're similar) Flight Hours - 12 I don't have much leadership experience on my resume, which I think is my biggest downfall. I've done a lot of volunteering with youth, through after school programs, summer camps, and GED tutoring, but nothing very recent. I've been looking at applying to ANG units as well - I liv…

I'm applying for this years active duty board, which meets late January. What I'm wondering is, I have over 100 hours with a pcsm of 89, but with the cut off date I wasn't able to get a ppl. That's literally my next step. Does anyone know if the board looks more at flight hours then an actual ppl; and will not having a ppl hurt my chances? Curious what your thoughts are, thanks. Do I have a shot at any non-UAV pilot slot? Heck, I'll go for fighter just like anyone else but I think I wouldn't be completely bummed if I got to fly in anything with wings. Should I just go for reserves so I know where I'm headed exactly, or active-duty for the best chances? Once I take a flight physical and ensure I can qualify, I was considering getting a PPL if that would help. Big investment though so want to be sure I have a chance. Also, wrong section but, I feel like my eyes are on the borderline for acceptable at 2.75 (20/200)... unless there's waivers... is it possible to get Lasik as a civilian now or is it still only available with a USAF surgeon? …

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I can gauge people's thoughts or experiences on flight hours and PPL. I am currently applying to a couple of fighter units but as of application time, I do not yet have my ppl (only about 20hrs). Correspondingly my PCSM score is kind of low at mid 700s however with 201+ hours it would be in the 90s. I aim to complete my PPL by end of March but a lot of units have their application deadline beforehand. Do you think that units would simply look at the initial score and flight hours or if I mention that i'm actively pursuing to complete it the units would take that into consideration? How heavily weighted is flight hours essentially …

So I know this has been discussed a million times before, but I'd like some of your guys input on my overall package for OTS. Im currently AD (6 years TIS) as a maintenance instructor, and a previous flight line crew chief. I'm 24 and have been working on my Bachelor's pretty much since I came in. I will get my Bachelor's of Science in Aeronautics with a minor in Unmanned Aerial Systems in September, just in time for the first and only AD board. I currently have a 4.0 and only have a capstone left so I should graduate with a 4.0. My AFOQT scores are Pilot 99 Navigator 99 Academic Attitude 77 Verbal 52 Quantitative 88. My PCSM is 72 with 1 flight hour, though I'm going to …

Hey Everyone, This is my first post and first thread here at the Baseops forums. Hoping to get some insight and look forward to contributing to the community as much as I can, as I've already learned so much from simply browsing the site so far. Anyway here goes. Bit about myself: -Recent university grad (Large state university) - 23 y/o -B.S. Information Systems. minor Business, GPA 2.8 (Not the best, I know.) -Currently employed with a large next day air cargo company as an air ops. supervisor, main task is jet weight and balance (2 years here) but have been working my entire young adult life. -Good health (no known ailments) and great visi…

Hi Everyone, I'm looking for advice on which are my best options for getting my commissioning and going to UPT. I'm currently working as a Test Engineer at Northrop Grumman, have been working in the Aerospace/Defense industry for 6 years and have obtained my single engine airplane private, instrument, and commercial ratings on my own. I understand I will need an age waiver. The AD recruiter I'm in contact with has told me the current AD board is not considering anyone requiring an age waiver. I'm putting out applications to every ANG unit that I can as well as getting the ball rolling with an AFRC recruiter for the unsponsored route. I have no wife and kids and wo…

Hello everyone, I'm trying to get a feel for how competitive of a candidate I will be. I have my AFOQT done but still need to schedule my TBAS before I have PCSM scores. My college GPA is probably my biggest hurdle to overcome, it's not great at all, however I've gotten my act together and learned from my failures. GPA is around 2.37 after a few disastrous early semesters, I am not proud of it, but I clawed my way back to graduation. AFOQT scores: P: 98 N: 96 AA: 77 V: 93 Q: 52 I also have my instrument rating, with high performance and complex endorsements and ~360 flight hours at the time of this post. I should have my commercial in a couple week…

Hey everyone! So I applied to the last UFT board and didn't make it. I applied with pretty terrible scores because when I originally took the tests I wasn't planning on going rated. My original PCSM score was an 11 my pilot was a 48. I just retook the TBAS and thought I did pretty well. My PCSM went up to an 18. I plan on taking the AFOQT in a few months after some studying. My question is, will I see a significant jump in my PCSM if I make it in the 80-90s for my Pilot. From what I read online without flight hours the highest a person can get is a PCSM:70. I'm curious on how the breakdown and weight of each portion is. Any advice helps. Also is have 0 flight hours…

I've been on these forums for quite a while but have never bothered to post one of these. I guess now is the time. I previously attended Navy OCS with a Pilot slot and disenrolled due to a family emergency involving my pregnant wife. Tried to get an age waiver but they don't do them for non-prior service, then started pursuing Guard/Reserve units, but got to be too old. Now that the age limit has been increased to 33, it looks like I've got some time to try again. -Age: 30 next month (I assume that gives me a solid year of attempting this again since 28 seemed to be the cutoff for most units when the age limit was 30) -AFOQT scores: Pilot: 92 Na…

Just about to finish up my fixed wing private pilot should be 40 hours on the dot. Anyone have any insight on how age waivers are looking right now for Active Duty? I've already got a bach, with 4 years in the Air Force on the C-5 as a loadmaster. I'm 37, so I wasn't sure if I'd be able to subtract 4 years from my age for already active duty served time? If that's the case my age would be 33, would I even need a waiver? My goal is to get back on the C-5 or C-17. Would prefer to return to Fred as I really enjoyed the mission. I've been studying for the AFOQT for close to a year with two study guides I got off Amazon, and with my recent private pilot knowledge fe…

Hello all, this is my first post on the threads. I'm looking to get a pilot slot. I'd take c-17 or c-130, but I'd love to get into a fighter (f-15/f-16) slot. Here are my credentials: Age: 27 Degree: BS in Mechanical Engineering (3.2 GPA) from URI AFOQT: 99/99/99/98/95 PCSM: 94 Flying time: PPL with 80 hrs Currently an E6 in the RIANG with 10 years in Letters: Strong letter from sqd cdr (O5), strong letter from sxn lead (E8), good letter from sup (E8) I'd say I have good interview skills. I've never had a job interview from which I didn't get an offer. However, I've heard the interviews have more casual questions (tell me a joke, wh…

Hey all, It's been about a year of applying for me. I've been able to get a few interviews at various heavy units last year, but the rejections far outweigh the interview offers, and haven't been offered a slot at any of the units I interviewed with. I'm looking to get some feedback to see where I stand and how I can improve my odds for the upcoming year. To get the basic stats out of the way: Age: 30 AFOQT: Pilot: 98, Nav: 85, ACAD: 93, Verbal: 91, Quant: 98 PCSM: 99 Degree/Major: B.S. & M.S. in Civil Engineering. Undergrad GPA: 3.51, Grad GPA: 3.10. LORs: Project manager (direct supervisor), managing principal of my office, flight in…

Back before 2020, when I was still in college, I was actively pursuing the ANG. After I graduated, I pursued the Active Duty Navy due to an atrocious job market, got accepted, and even attended OCS in July of this year. However I DOR'd after the flight doc said my vision was slightly out of regs and disqualified me from SNA. I was also recommended to come back. I have already gotten LASIK on 02SEP2022 and have 20/15 vision, but it will be a long time until I have the opportunity to return to OCS for an SNA slot. In the meantime, I would absolutely love to at least take another shake at the ANG. Age: 25 AFOQT: Pilot 89 Navigator 77 Academic Aptitude 94 Verb…

Hello everybody, I am 28year old male, NOT from United States, currently studying military program specialty in avionics, I have just started third year of five year study program ending in Master's degree. I was selected in green card lottery and I have been seriously thinking about leaving military, emigrating to US, joining Air Force, getting citizenship and completing degree in US using credits from my current studies, this could probably happen in about 4 years and by then i should be around 32-33 years old when trying to apply for OTS and UPT. I know most of people want fighters, i am no different, but i just can't live without atleast trying and ho…

Hi, I'm currently a sophomore at USAFA who just completed Basic Soaring. I am horrible at flying gliders, after 9 sorties I can not get takeoff, aerotow, or landing without the IP taking it. All of these were graded as hooks. On sorties 7 and 8, I flew with the cadet soaring commander who said my problem was being passive aggressive and letting the glider fly me. My application to be a soaring IP is very good; it's just flying ability which may hold me back. Does this information show that I don't have what it takes to be a pilot of a powered plane?

So, long story short after 3 years ROTC didn't work out for me, so at this point my options are to enlist now or pursue a commission through OTS or the ANG/Reserves. I only have 2 years left before I finish my degree, which means I can start applying to OTS late next year. I realize its probably the most competitive route and currently there are no pilot slots for FY14/15. I'm 22 years old so I know time isn't an issue yet. My question is, should I enlist and finish my degree on AD, or should I just finish my degree now and start applying to OTS? I'm not 100% excited about enlisting to be honest (I've spent the last 8 years pursuing officer programs) but I will do it …

Thanks for anyone's help before I explain below. I am an AS400 In ROTC that got picked up for RPA instead of pilot. I was talking to someone and they told me that their is the possibility of getting picked up for an ANG pilot slot or reserve slot and commissioning into the guard instead of active duty. I've looked into the process for applying to guard units and understand that it requires a lot of work and also a lot of heartbreak but there is still perhaps a chance. I have also heard that getting a cso slot into the guard is a little easier than getting a pilot and might better help chances of getting a pilot slot later on. So essentially I have two questions. 1. …
