Ladies & Gents, Been working on this awhile and finally saw the years ticking away on the calendar (about to be 27) so I got my act together. Took the AFOQT two weeks ago: Pilot 98 Nav 99 AA 82 Verb 83 Quant 72 That quantitative score hurt a bit, had several questions not in my study guides. Oh well! Then last Friday I finished my PPL - luckily passed the first time because apparently a checkride is $650 these days. TBAS is scheduled for tomorrow. I think I can get to ~80 flying hours before packets are due and hope that is good enough for a decent PCSM. Finished school in…

Hi folks, I'm currently starting my final year of college also seriously considering retaking my AFOQT to try and improve my PCSM. AS of the moment, I am planning on commissioning FY18, but that may all change. Hear me out. I'm not really one to be tact so I'll just say this the best that I know how. At the moment, I have an RPA slot and as glamorous as the future of this career looks, it's not something I think I want for myself. That whole idea of flying in a box, disconnected from everything that has defined flying for the past century is something I am still not sure about. As of right now, my PCSM is at a 59. I've taken the TBAS twice and AFOQT onc…

Good afternoon, I'm currently a 21 year old (22 in October) working on my package to be submitted when I graduate from my university. I been in touch with a recruiter and he told me that the Air Force OTS Rated Slots are only looking for Stem Majors. I surfed the internet web and found contradicting statements regarding his claim. If the recruiter's statement is false, I have listed my credentials and experiences below. It would be awesome if you guys can give me some feedback on how to improve my chances of being selected. Age: 21 (22 in October 2017) GPA/Major: 3.36 (can raise it to 3.4 before graduation)/ Marketing AFOQT Scores: I have yet to take…

I am trying to get a feel for what my chances are at obtaining a UPT position. I have been in the guard for 6 years, TSgt and I am a Weapons Director (GCI). I am 28 yrs old so I know time is almost over. Not too picky on what to fly, fighters would be awesome an although I have heard success stories with scores less than these those were probably isolated events. Other info below please share thoughts? Rank: TSgt Work: Mission Planning NCOIC Weapons and Tactics Shop, Weapons Director (also known as enlisted ABM) GPA: 3.91 AFOQT: Pilot: 87, Nav: 52, Ap: 40, Verbal : 44, Q: 39 PCSM: 68 with 7 flight hours Will continue building fli…

Hello all, Got all my scores back today. Pretty disappointed. Probably going to re-take both AFOQT/TBAS again. My plan was to apply to both reserve units and ANG units. GPA: 2.66 in Marketing AFOQT pilot: 59 PCSM: 63 with 81 hours. Score estimated to be 67 if I can get to 100 flight hours. Recommendations: F15 pilot with confirmed MIG kill who can speak to my airmanship Ret. AF General who can speak to my work ethic Sr. Flight Instructor/owner who can speak to my airmanship/work ethic (I work at the flight school) I know for a fact I can get a better pilot score on the AFOQT. I'm trying to decide if I should just re-take i…

Hey guys, I'm an army aviation captain (blackhawk pilot) with a couple years left on my contract looking at my options. My wife is Air Force, and we're considering a bridge transfer of myself to Air Force to stay together (she doesn't want to wear green). I want to see if any of the senior guys could help me answer some critical questions. 1. Is it possible to transfer straight into UPT (or would I need to even) from Army Aviation as an O-3? Or have you heard of army officers doing this? 2. If I come into AF/UPT as an O-3 with 3 years, will I be at risk for career progression (i.e. Never make O-5)? 3. Will being a H-60 driver pigeon-hole me into pav hawks…

Hey everyone I just took the AFOQT and I am a bit disappointed with my scores. At the moment I am a regional pilot with about 1800 hours and 5 months from upgrading to captain. Howdy, First off, this is my first post but I am frequenter lurker of the forums. I try to absorb as much knowledge as I can from these forums as possible but I have come to a crossroads and would greatly appreciate some advice from folks within the military. I am a civilian pilot with a little over 300 hours, I'm a CFI and CFII with my commercial-multi who works out of the Bend, OR airport. I am about a year out from finishing my Bachelor's of Applied Science in Technology and Management (I understand this is a somewhat useless degree) and have an Associate's Degree in Aviation. I've maintained a fairly consistent 3.7 GPA throughout my studies while working two jo…

Last year (2010) I got into some trouble with the AF. Underage drinking. I was 20 years old, an E3. It happened off base, and it was later thrown out in court. The following duty day after it happened, I went to my first shirt and told her what happened. The commander and stuff got involved, but in the end all I got was an LOR. I wrote a rebuttal (which my shop chief read just today, and gave me props to how well written it was) and pretty much just told my commander what happened. I was at a nearby college, and wanted to make some friends, so I had a few drinks. At the end of the night I realized that I was NOT okay to drive, so I slept in my car, and a police officer fo…

Hello all, I have what may be a somewhat unique situation that I haven't really been able to find an answer for. I separated active duty about two years ago from the Air Force as an O-3. I moved to a state where recreational marijuana is legal and experimented with it twice when on IRR. Later, I started taking flight lessons and saw a Guard UPT board announcement and am considering applying for multiple Guard/Reserve slots in multiple airframes since I am still under the age limit. Would my experimentation disqualify me from a UPT position or a security clearance? I was not on active duty at the time and not taking flight lessons at the time either. For r…

Hello all, I am new to the flying squadron community. I am a current army helo pilot, CH-47s with 1000 hrs (two deployments - Afghanistan). I am approaching the end of my contract with the army in a couple of months and I've been looking at going Air Force Guard/Reserve. Would love to be able to transition to a heavy/cargo squadron. Looking for advice, suggestions or if someone would like to share their experience on going the unsponsored route. Unfortunately for me, I am 29 years old. I've been looking into going unsponsored, but I don't really know much about it. I recently took the AFOQT and TBAS. PCSM of 77 with a 87 Pilot. I have the hours so I am guessing I must of …

Wanted to get advice on my chances with my scores and current situation. I'm currently a non-rated active duty O-3 in the Air Force trying to get picked up by a reserve heavy unit. I am 27 turning 28 in February, so age is getting close, but I am already over the 5-yr Total Federal Commissioned Services requirement and would need an Exception To Policy (ETP). I am only just now a month past my 5-yr date. I would also need to Palace Chase, if picked up in early 2018, and would be asking for 6 months off my current Active Duty Service Commitment. Undergraduate GPA: 3.35 Masters GPA: 3.38 (2/3 complete) AFOQT: P 97, N 99, AA 62, V 83, Q 42 PCSM: 89 w…

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I can gauge people's thoughts or experiences on flight hours and PPL. I am currently applying to a couple of fighter units but as of application time, I do not yet have my ppl (only about 20hrs). Correspondingly my PCSM score is kind of low at mid 700s however with 201+ hours it would be in the 90s. I aim to complete my PPL by end of March but a lot of units have their application deadline beforehand. Do you think that units would simply look at the initial score and flight hours or if I mention that i'm actively pursuing to complete it the units would take that into consideration? How heavily weighted is flight hours essentially …

Hey everyone, I recently took the TBAS and feel kinda bummed about my PCSM score of 52. My AFOQT scores are 82 (Pilot) / 72 (Nav) / 64 (Acad Apt) / 83 (Verbal) / 45 (Quant) I only have 1 flight hour, and if I were to get my PPL (41+ hours) my PCSM would go to 71. However, I knew after taking the TBAS that I didn't do great. I did well on the directional orientation and multi-tasking, except for the math. I feel that if I practiced with the same incredibly stiff joystick and got faster on simple math problems, I could improve my PCSM score by retaking the TBAS. However, I've been gearing up to apply for the active duty board in June 2016. I can't retake the TBAS befor…

OK, so I have interviewed twice (once at my home unit and another elsewhere) now with no luck. At the beginning, I thought I was a competitive candidate but now I am starting to doubt myself. Quick facts: -Been a loadmaster in the Guard for 7 years, -Private Pilot (66.1 Hours) -College Grad, BBA in Business Economics, 3.16 GPA -AFOQT: 85 Pilot 82 Navigator 90 Academic Aptitude 99 Verbal 61 Quantitative PCSM Score of 81. Also, I felt like I knocked both interviews out of the park when I left but apparently not.

Hello Baseops, I was trying to get a feel for what a decent PCSM score looks like in the current Reserve/ANG hiring environment. AFOQT 75 for both Pilot and Nav, 127 or so hours flying time (have PPL, some XC time built up and 1/4 of the way through instrument training; working towards CSEL rating and maybe becoming a CFI while I work to get selected by a squadron and get to go to UPT). Current PCSM 69; I have another chance to take the AFOQT and I think I can raise it if I get some math tutoring help...I was able to find information about previous years on some forums somewhere and as I recall the median PCSM score for people selected for UPT in FY 16 or 17 was som…

Hello All, I am new to the board. I have just applied for OTS (as a civilian) for the upcoming rated board. I have only applied for a pilot slot as I plan on being a third generation pilot in my family. My recruiter has been great to me throughout the entire process and seems very optimistic about my selection, especially considering the need for UPT candidates. The board is in May. I believe its 17OT2 Age:25 AFOQT Scores: Pilot: 79 Nav:41 AA:37 Verbal: 56 Q: 23 PCSM: 62 (1st attempt) Flight hours: 49 FAA Student Pilot Certificate FAA 1st Class Medical I am scheduled to have my private pilot license check-ride in February.…

Do I have a shot at any non-UAV pilot slot? Heck, I'll go for fighter just like anyone else but I think I wouldn't be completely bummed if I got to fly in anything with wings. Should I just go for reserves so I know where I'm headed exactly, or active-duty for the best chances? Once I take a flight physical and ensure I can qualify, I was considering getting a PPL if that would help. Big investment though so want to be sure I have a chance. Also, wrong section but, I feel like my eyes are on the borderline for acceptable at 2.75 (20/200)... unless there's waivers... is it possible to get Lasik as a civilian now or is it still only available with a USAF surgeon? …

I’ve been enlisted at my guard unit for 12 years all of it being spent in OPS. Starting at the end of last year it was asked why I hadn’t yet applied for a UPT slot. The simple answer was I had never flown an airplane and having seen some of the apps come through figured I didn’t think I would have much of a chance. As the weeks went on more pilots made reference to me potentially applying and thinking it was a good idea. I guess me being a generally good dude and always trying to help does indeed pay off. All these happenings and other talks now have me about to start my PPL and get that shit knocked out prior to our next board. While I’m not guaranteed a slo…

This post probably won't contribute much to anyone but I need to get it off my chest and I'm here... so why not? I joined the Air Force at 19 years old in 2003. After 18 months, I was separated under "Force Shaping Phase II" (I was RIF'd) in 2004 at 20 years old. During those 18 months on AD, I worked on C130H models as a GAC troop and dreamed of one day flying for Big Blue. After my separation, I joined the Air National Guard so I could stay a part of the family and started plugging away at my undergrad degree so I could apply to OTS while thinking, incorrectly, that my time in service would count against my age and that I'd be able to apply to fly after graduating. Supp…
