Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by huntfishvote,

Hey all- I'm an off the street select at an ANG unit. I was put in touch with the unit's recruiter and had one conversation with him about a month ago. I still haven't heard back. I haven't provided him any additional documents either. This is all pre-MEPS/FC1. Do you have any suggested plan of action if you were in this situation? I know about the waiting game, but when phones go silent, and emails aren't responded to I get anxious. I am considering waiting another month and then reaching out to the pilot hiring board and the chief pilot. Any suggestions? Should I call the other recruiters at the unit? In the mean time I'm finishing the last ho…

Fellow Air National Guard Hopefuls who are of the elderly variety.... Attached is the newest NGB ETP Checklist. I couldnt upload the fill-able form, but this will allow you to see that the ETP checklist has been drastically cut back from the previous. My last conversation with my recruiter indicated that NGB has changed their accessions process and now requires ETPs to be complete before swearing in just like the reserves. They also indicated that Age Waivers are now to only take 30 Days as opposed to 6+ months. I received this information early September and my packet was pushed up at the end of the second week of September. I was told that my packet is now…

Note: Tried searching this topic in the forum and found very little on it specifically. Is there a general consensus or standard on how/when to request an accelerated promotion in AFRC? According to Mypers its a letter pushed through VPC to ARPC. Have a date but its > 1 yr out, which puts me at 7 yrs TIG/11 yrs total service for O-4. Seems strange considering PVs are promoting at 5 yrs TIG/9 yrs total basically giving them a 2 year advantage. My CC sounds like he would consider pushing the request to Sr Rater (Wg/CC) but not sure what kind of justification is required to get an O-6 to approve. Right now my unit is grossly undermanned for officers, and the …

Hey guys, anyone on these boards familiar with the 115th FW out of Madison? I will be interviewing soon for a maintenance position. I have a background in machining, metal work, etc., hence why I am looking in that direction. Is the unit pretty cohesive? What is the atmosphere like? I have interviewed with a couple of heavy units and the shop and squadrons were very relaxed but this is my first and only non-heavy unit I'll be interviewing with. I'm both nervous and excited because I have no idea what to expect. The posts on fighter squadrons are plentiful on this board but the perspectives are so varied in comparison to the consensus on heavy squadrons. Thanks …

  5. Will be visiting a fighter squadron during a drill weekend and am invited to a social event/roll call after work. Have read a lot of forums on here with the advice, 1. Don't be a douche, 2. Don't talk about yourself unless asked, 3. Bring a nice bottle of booze as a token of appreciation, 4. Be a cool dude(tte) Beyond that, any other specific DOs and DONTs you could give a novice for roll call and for the visit in general? Thanks in advance. -DD

Hello, Has anyone else experienced wing FM trying to force a member to PCS for seasoning training? I live about 3.5 hours from my duty location and my TDY order were denied because they are over 180 days. My understanding of the regs are anything over 180 AFRC considers it a PCS however this is insane. I still have a home and family to pay for while I'm finishing up MQT and they won't fund per diem for lodging. Is there any way around this?

Howdy everyone, Just seeing if anyone had advice for contacting the 345th BS in Dyess. I would very much like to apply to their 2024/2025 UPT board, but I am having some trouble getting in touch with them to arrange a visit during their November rush weekend. I have sent several emails to no avail and having trouble with the number listed on milrecruiter. Curious if anyone else is having this issue. Apologies if this isnt the right place to post this, but I am at a bit of a loss. Thanks

I'm sure this has been asked before, but is actually possible to fly fighters (or bombers) in the ANG with a non-fighter background? I'm a Navy P-3 and T-6B instructor by trade. Is such a transition actually a thing in the ANG? Or is it a once-in-a-blue-moon, you gotta be best friends with the Squadron Commander type of deal? Curious to hear any info on this. Thanks!

  12. I am a prior Army Aviator that is currently in the Air National Guard in an O-5 non-flying position. I haven't flown for several years and would like to get back into the cockpit in the ANG or AFRES. My options are limited to only vertical lift, since big USAF killed the Fixed Wing Qualification Program in 2012. I am searching for any suggestions.

I’ve been lurking for a while And the site has been extremely useful so I thought I’d role the dice and ask a question. First I’ll give a little background I’m 23 years old with a bachelors degree in business with a 3.65 gpa. I’ve been married a little over a year into an Air Force family and I decided about six months ago that I wanted to join the Air Force. After talking with my father in law I decided to pursue the Air Guard and try to fly. I’ve been talking with a recruiter for my home (nearest) unit for about a month now and I’m getting dates together to take all my tests. I have no flying experience but I’m willing to put in the work I need to to make…

Dumb question, but I've gone through vPC-GR and not had much luck finding a straightforward answer. I'm an IMA with no service committments, what would be the process for separating from the ready reserve? When I left active duty I just filled out the form on vMPF self service actions and that was that. Is it this same for reservists? Any limitations for advance notice to separate? For active duty, if I remember correctly, it was no less than 6 months and no more than 12 to establish a separation date. Any other gotchas you all have seen? Thanks much!

Searched the forum and saw mixed opinions on this. Currently AD MQ-9 Pilot looking to go to UPT in the Guard/Reserves. Have a visit to a Heavy unit in the next month. I’ll be in back home on leave and they were nice enough to let me spend some time at the squadron. Not a drill weekend or big organized rush event, just a casual midweek visit. Show up, meet people, see the plane, maybe lunch afterwards. My questions are: Wear nice civilian clothes or bring my flight suit with me to wear? Should I bring as much of a UPT packet as I have together right now with me and update it later? Or just a resume? I know first impressions are important, appreciate any help

  18. Background: New pilot (warrant) at a new Army guard unit I’ve been told that if you get picked up by an ANG unit, your remaining Active Duty Service Obligation isn’t a factor, because you’re going from Guard to Guard, even if you are transferring states. This seems logical, but couldn’t find an exact answer to this in DOD 1205.05, 1300.04, or 1304.25. Anyone have experience? If anyone else has been in a similar situation, when do you show your interest or intentions to your current unit? I’d think you’d want to keep it close to your chest until you get picked up, otherwise you’re burning bridges on a gamble.

The Air Guard, MAFFS, and Herk communities (and world) lost three great heroes on Jan 23, 2020. Captain Ian McBeth (Lt Col, MT ANG), First Officer Paul Hudson ((Lt Col (Ret) Marine Corps)), and Flight Engineer Rick DeMorgan, Jr. (18 year USAF FE vet) perished while fighting the fires in Australia. Personally, I was a Navigator in the Montana ANG with Ian for three years and I can't think of any pilot who I'd rather go into combat with. Please, do not speculate on this thread as to the cause of the crash. I just want this thread to be a memorial for those who knew any of these three aviators. We will find out about the details of the crash in due time. …

I recently retook the AFOQT, and all my scores that could go up did, namely my Quant. However, for unfortunate algorithm reasons, my TBAS went down. Do you think it is worth retaking the TBAS to try and get an ANG Fighter slot? I have enlisted with an F-16 unit as a maintainer, and am shipping to BMT on 4/22, so this would be while at tech school/early next year. I've included scores and background info below. Thank you. Hey all, was doing some research on guard units here in AZ and in trying to cast a wide net, I shot resumes over to the 161ARW and the 162d Wing. Going through the 162d wing site I saw they operate RC-26s under the 214th group in addition to F-16s but cannot find any info other than that. I would really like to shoot an application over to RC-26s on top of the 16s as it seems like an interesting mission and is close to home. Does anybody have any contact info or possibly any leads on if they hire for UPT slots? I have a feeling that they might not even operate the RC-26 anymore but can't find info on that either. Thanks in advance for the help guys!

Hey all, I was picked up by a heavy ANG unit last March with the contingency that I get my PPL by the end of the year. I had knocked out nearly all of my PPL requirements aside from my solo XC and had to abandon flight training and cancel my Checkride in October for COVID related reasons and have had a heck of a time rescheduling ( I live in a very rural area and getting a DPE out here is tough). Anyways, The chief pilot who gave me that offer has since retired. In speaking with the new chief pilot, I was informed that the PPL was no longer required. My question is ‘should I continue pursuing my PPL?’ It’s no longer required and I’ve already blown through $10,0…
