I know the board is still quite a few months away, but I am curious if anyone can shed some light on this for me. I have been sponsored by a unit and have been told that the boards are continually getting more and more competitive so I am wondering if anyone could give me an idea of my chances. I have a quick question about guard promotions. If you left AD as an O-3 and came into the guard, how long does it usually take to get promoted to O-4 assuming you meet the time in current grade, PME, etc? Curious how this process works. Specifically, I was twice deferred to O-4 on active duty, and want to know the promotion process in the guard or reserves from this situation. I have heard of many people who left AD because being twice deferred and were promoted in the guard/reserve.

So I decided to start a new topic based on a discussion in the Bonus thread regarding the new technician/ART pay tables. As a 14 year technician who served as a technician from Jan 07-about three weeks ago, I’m happy progress was finally made, even if I’ll never see it. Some comments were made about TAG buy-in and such. But, the way I read it, it looks like it applies to multiple agencies (to include the Department of the AIr Force). Here’s the letter if you haven’t seen it: And the pay tables can be found here by scrolling down to tables 0759-0767. https:// https://apps.opm.gov/SpecialRates/2018/AllSRTables.aspx So, since it’s the new OPM pay table and…

I have done a search on “unsponsored slots” and have found a lot of useful info. However, I can’t find the answer to this Question: say I go to the AFRES HQ board unsponsored and get a slot. Do I have a time limit to find a unit to call “home” or can I take my sweet A$$ time and wait until the unit I want is look for UPT’s

I'm separating from Active Duty but haven't specifically picked a Guard or Reserve Unit. In my searches/ conversations/ interviews, however, I keep getting told to avoid a "Break in Service" as if is a terrible thing and will adversely affect me, but I can't really get a solid explanation as to why. My financial situation allows my wife & I to comfortably take a few months off and travel, researching various units in the meantime. Why can't I be on "IRR" status until I've picked a unit and done the paperwork? How will this hurt my future Guard/Reserve career? Or, for that matter, an Active Duty career should I later decide to join the pilot recall program?

I was recently sworn-in to the 135thAS in Baltimore. I was told I don't really have a requirement to attend Drill weekends, but I still want to... to get to know more of the guys and get a feel for things in the Guard. What can I expect to do if I come to a UTA weekend? Will they put me to work? Do you think I would be able to ride along on some of the training missions? (That would be awesome if I could!!) Any input would be much appreciated!

how does communting work in the guard/reserve units, for those that live a long distance away? all the units I'm applying to are a good 1000 miles plus from home. im talking about if you have to pay for it out of pocket, or if you are able to either get reimbursed/grab a trasport floight out of a nearby base.

I just posted this in the UPT forum, so apologies for the double-post...hoping this may get some feedback. I followed the threads here for a while and finally have a question for the masses. Does anyone know of someone who washed out of UPT, moved on with their careers, and eventually was able to go back to UPT with either the Guard or Reserves?? Quick background: I failed out several years ago (airmanship, SA, etc) and since have moved on as a Nav in a strike platform. I now am an instructor/evaluator and coming up on the point where my commitment is over. Over the years I have gotten lots of civilian hours, multi-engine time, etc. I am curious if it is even…

We're looking for a new pilot or two. All interested individuals are invited to send their resume and/or information to 122FSpilothiring@gmail.com . A full application includes, but is not limited to, a college degree or status of coursework/transcript, AFOQT scores, TBAS test and PCSM score, and summary of flying time, if any. All applications will be considered, but only a small number of applicants will be invited to interview in January. I highly recommend visiting during one of the upcoming drills (Oct 14-16, Nov 4-6, Dec 2-4). If you want to maximize your chances make sure all the tests are complete with competitive scores (most of our applicants that get in…

Hi, I admit this is kind of a "what are my chances" question, but not really. Please read my entire question before removing it. I am graduating high school this year. I've thoroughly exhausted all of the forums on this website and I am an expert on the ANG pilot selection process works and how to get there. First of all, I have recently taken the ASVAB and I have found out I have very high scores, enough to get the job I want when I enlist in the ANG-Aircrew Flight Equipment(life support specialist). I want this job so that I can have tons of face time with the pilots so they can know me. I thought this job would be best. I know everything else about how to become a pilo…

I am currently attending grad school while I wait to go back to UPT. I did some searching but could not find much. At what rank does a Guard guy need a Masters degree? I heard it is not needed to get Major like AD, but I was trying to figure out if there was a rank that the Guard typically wants one.

Hello everyone, Currently I am a junior in college majoring in mechanical engineering with a few questions with regard to jobs outside of the guard. I have been searching through a lot of threads and haven't seen anything on the topic so I figured I'd ask. How hard is it to have a job that actually pays well outside of the guard? For instance, let's say I worked at Boeing or some other aerospace engineering company as an engineer... Does flying get in the way of actually being able to retain a job? My guess is it would depend on the company and what they are all about. And I know about the legal obligations companies have to keep your job while you get deployed, …

OK, I know the traditional Guardsman does not normally receive retirement pay unitl they are 60, but, my question is this, based on a statement I heard the other day... If you have 20 full years of retirement points (365 x 20 yrs) and you retire, do you start drawing pay immediately? Example: Let's say you join the reserve component off AD, you've got about 10 years in, you're on MPA tours for a year or so, and then in the next 15 years or so you get those 9 full years of points, so at the end of 26 years, you've got your full load of 20 years worth of points. Can I retire the next day and get a check two weeks later?

Sorry for the long first post from a long time lurker, but I am in need of some advice. I am separating from active duty as a Major with close to 14 years of service. I have a couple full-time job offers in the Guard/Reserve, and I am having a difficult time making a decision. I have researched a lot on AGR vs ART and feel I am well-versed in the pros and cons of each. As for the offers, the first option is an ANG AGR position that is supposedly a flying position, but remains to be seen if I will actually do any flying due to needed requals or interfly agreements. The second option is an AFRES ART position that will indeed be flying. Both jobs are in the s…

Just wondering if any ANG techs could answer a few questions. 1. Is the guard on the GS system still or do they use the new pay-band stuff? 2. Are instructor pilots automatically a GS-13? 3. How do the steps work, are you automatically step 1 when you get hired? 4. When/if I buy back my active duty time towards a federal retirement, does that also affect what step I am on? Thanks guys...

I will be graduating UPT in about 4 months and wanted to know if you are able to live off of guard bumming right out of UPT. The AGR slots are tight and everyone wants them and I don't really want to go and fly a small commuter for slim shange. I know someone out there has had to have done it. Is it possible to support a wife and NO kids guard bumming while waiting for that good civilian aviation job. (I will be a first LT out of UPT) Thanks for the info!
