Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Anyone ever done this? I’ve heard rumors it’s a thing but have zero experience or knowledge about it. Guess you could say I’m ignorant. Any one heard or experienced it or know of someone who has?

Is it possible to join the National Guard or the Air Force Reserves as an Officer? It seems like all the information on the recruiting websites pertain to enlisting... Thanks in advance for the replies...

Hello all, I'm a junior in college at a collegiate aviation program and was looking for info on joining an ANG unit(possibly Navy also). I have 3.5 GPA, about 200 hours, CFI, ME, IR, I have not taken ASTB or AFOQT yet but I have started studying(a little). Is this somewhat competitive? I have heard having prior flight experience is a huge help. Can I apply to out of state units? I assume fighter units are much more competitive than tanker/airlift. If anybody has any advice or info that'd be great.

  4. I was recently hired back into the guard, had a 4 year break in service but decided to get back in to finish out my time since I had 10 years on active duty. I have not sworn in yet, in the process of getting back in. I let my civilian employer know that I would be returning to the guard part time (4 days a month) and now they posted my job online trying to fill immediately. I have not been let go, yet.. Since I am not in the guard yet do I have any protection against being fired? Here is an excerpt from USERRA, which covers future service (note 3): USERRA is a federal law intended to ensure that persons who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, Reserves, National …

  6. I know this topic is taboo but I would like to know. Of course I am planning on great success but it will be good to know what the implications are if any of the above happen in the training pipeline, rather than be naive to the situation and have something unexpected come up if there is a situation. Do the Reserves basically decide what they get to do with you? If you drop before inprocessing are your just out of the system? If you have issues at OTS are you just a Reserve staff sergeant for a few years? If you wash out of UPT can you essentially just pack it up and go home or will they assign you another job? Just curious. Thanks!

What’s going in Kansas? I had some buddies wanting to get into that unit and when I asked recently about it they said everyone is running for the hills over there and that the place is imploding from something going on over there from the TAG down. What’s up?

The 370th FLTS is currently advertising a job for a KC-135 IP AGR. Maj position so Captains/Majors can apply. This is a great, very small squadron with a fun job in the local area supporting test. No deployments and living in Southern California. See REAMO for application instructions and rules. Feel free to contact me with questions about the unit, but don't ask how to apply, that information is clearly spelled out on the REAMO site.

We're looking for a new pilot or two. All interested individuals are invited to send their resume and/or information to 122FSpilothiring@gmail.com . A full application includes, but is not limited to, a college degree or status of coursework/transcript, AFOQT scores, TBAS test and PCSM score, and summary of flying time, if any. All applications will be considered, but only a small number of applicants will be invited to interview in January. I highly recommend visiting during one of the upcoming drills (Oct 14-16, Nov 4-6, Dec 2-4). If you want to maximize your chances make sure all the tests are complete with competitive scores (most of our applicants that get in…

I was selected at a fighter unit in 2020 at age 26. My father also served in the AF so the AF had all of my medical records since I was born. This made the process extremely long, and I was only able to get to my IFC1 in 2021 (17 months after selection). To my horror, I contracted Covid during the IFC1 and was unable to complete the physical. My unit did everything they could but obviously they couldn't do much with the failed IFC1, so I was dropped and lost my slot. I didn't do anything to leave on bad terms in my opinion and everything was amicable. Here is where I am at now. Age - 28.5 AETC told me to resubmit medical documentation fo…

  13. "The service has also begun reviewing training for the AC-130J Ghostrider, the Air Force’s newest gunship. It’s trying to fast-track special operations flight school by sending students straight to AFSOC training units after they earn their wings on the T-6 Texan II. That cuts out the intermediate phase of flying the T-1 Jayhawk, which is heading into retirement after serving as the stepping stone to mobility and special operations aircraft. That decision can shorten pilot training time by six months, AFSOC spokesperson Lt. Col. Becky Heyse said. Around 30 airmen are expected to go straight from undergraduate pilot training to AFSOC to learn to fly the U-28…

  14. Hello all. Broadly: Is it possible to attend a medical school or law school while serving as a traditional guardsman/reservist? Specifically: My areas of concern are in the ability to plan ahead for TDY or deployment. For example, if taking a semester of classes, would I have to drop out mid semester because some type of training or deployment comes up? Or would I be able to expect a 3-4 month notice so that I won’t enroll in certain classes in the affected semester. Also, would the law/med program be willing to let a guard/reservist miss numerous semesters because of duty? ABSTRACT: Would being a pilot in the reserves make an applicant to law/med m…

  15. Started by Chida,

For those guard/reserve troughers out there: Let's say I am on an MPA tour and accrue 10 days of leave. At the end of the tour I take those 10 days of leave. Are there any restrictions on where I need to be when I finish my leave? When I was on active duty/Regular officer status the answer was "leave starts and ends at the local area." But since the end of my leave is the end of an active duty period, I'd think that it would be treated like terminal leave, meaning that I can be anywhere when my leave ends. I checked the regs I know of and this situation is not specifically addressed. Thoughts/opinions?

Does anyone have a succinct reference (AFI or otherwise) of what the legal commitment is to your ANG unit? I know we have a legal requirement to attend drill and if you don't show up, the sheriff can pick you up and physically make you attend drill. How about if you come to drill but make no other efforts to stay current? What are the repercussions of that? How does the UPT commitment figure into all of this?

I'm currently putting together my packet for the applications, and I had a couple questions about the letters of recommendation: 1. I know (very well) a retired Vice Admiral F/A-18 pilot, and regularly interact with F/A-18 pilots (I know, I'm very lucky). I also know a retired F-16 ANG guy pretty well, and a retired C-130 pilot (AD and reserves I believe). So I'm most likely going to choose the Vice Admiral and the F-16 pilot since I'm rushing fighter squadrons, but who do I choose as my third? Would a squadron be more interested in the F/A-18 pilots I work around, or a C-130 guy that I know through my dad, and happens to be a really good guy that helped talk me into…

  19. Curious if anyone will be willing to share their schedules on a month to month basis. Obviously, dual flying jobs are very demanding. Are you working 25 days/month? Are you gone for most of the month? How do you balance your family/social life? etc.. Appreciate the inputs!

I got a hold of an Air Force Reserve recruiter and he replied with the following: Thank you for your interest in the Air Force Reserve! At this time there are a very limited number of available vacant positions to become a commissioned officer. Is this true or is he trying to make up his enlisted qouta?

  21. I’ve searched the threads, but can’t find quite what I’m looking for. My question is, what’s it like to live about nine hours or more from your unit? I got hired at a unit in one state, but have a great civilian career opportunity in another state. Also, the unit does allow out of state commuters. Serving the unit comes first and that’s the priority, but I’d like to have a loose idea of a “plan” for the coming civilian side of my life in the upcoming years after training. For those of you who have a far commute to the unit, or have knowledge of others who do, what’s it like? I’m talking about in the ways of weather, stress, work/life balance, finances. Is it not…

  22. So I am about a year out from gradutaing college with my Aeronautical bachelors degree. 3.6 GPA. I am looking to apply to my local ANG fighter unit. I have my commercial, Instrument, CFI, couple hundred hours of Civ flight time. What should I be doing now to get the ball rolling? I assume I should start getting ready to take the AFOQT and the TBAS? I've gathered a couple of LORs so far and not really sure where to go from here. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  23. If I'm on the promotion list as an ANG officer, then prior to pinning-on, transfer to an AFRES billet (i.e. quit the guard and affiliate as a SELRES or PIRR), does AFRC promote me on my effective date (i.e. 7 yrs TIG)? Anyone have a reg reference or personal tale?

I will be graduating UPT in about 4 months and wanted to know if you are able to live off of guard bumming right out of UPT. The AGR slots are tight and everyone wants them and I don't really want to go and fly a small commuter for slim shange. I know someone out there has had to have done it. Is it possible to support a wife and NO kids guard bumming while waiting for that good civilian aviation job. (I will be a first LT out of UPT) Thanks for the info!
