Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

Please go check out the new GuardReserveJobs and send me any feedback. There's a few known issues, but they should be fixed soon. Also, if you're good with graphic arts and wanna try to knock out a nice banner for the page (where is says Smart job Board), lemme know. I'll upgrade your job listing or resume to the most baller VIP status I can. Thanks!

So I'm an enlisted reservist out of Nellis and started talking to the helicopter rescue unit at Patrick about putting a pilot package in next year. I live in Florida roughly an hour from the base and commute to Nellis for drill because I like my job and the unit. My Chief told me today I can do a drill weekend with that unit on orders which is great. I'd be in uniform as a SSgt. That being said do any of you see a problem with me hanging out with the pilots if I'm in uniform? Thoughts?

  4. I made a thread a while ago about advice for what to do during a unit visit. Sadly that visit ended up being cancelled due to Delta Variant. I've tried calling the unit back since but no luck. I've been calling several heavy units all across the country, mostly focused on areas I want to live. But it seems that every single one does not allow visits. Either due to delta variant or they say they get too many applicants/visit request they can't have 100+ people come and visit. Or the more common one, the scheduler gives me the number for an officer and their phone always goes straight to voicemail with the voicemail box being full. Has anyone else had any luck?

I did my best to search the forums, but didn't come up with much. Unfortunately, the HIANG site doesn't have much information either. From a financial standpoint, I'm just curious how one lives on Oahu with a Guard salary. I'm not too clear on who is eligible to receive BAH, or if you're allowed to live on base or not. If anyone here has experience with this, I'd be most appreciative of any insight you can provide.

  6. Howdy folks, I'm an enlisted dude in the ANG, still a couple years away from finishing my degree in underwater basket weaving (I can still be a hard science major if it matters to the board that much). I'm a private pilot with just shy of 200 hours and have access to a lot more additional flight time in a Cessna 152 barring maintenance issues and other time commitments. Point being, I love flying, and have the tools to get to a professional civilian piloting career. But that's all fine and dandy, I really want to be a pilot in the military as well. I am totally fine with not having a professional civilian flying job if I end up AGR. Joining the military for a career in th…

Folks - what's the general outlook on legacy Herk units in the Guard & Reserves? I'm exploring Palace Chase/Front options in the near-term and trying to gauge viability for 12Ms in anticipation of the FY16 Force Management Programs. I'll be sitting at 16 yrs active next summer and would need to crosstrain from 12B. PM or direct reply greatly appreciated. Cheers.

  8. I am a former C-130 nav and Army CH-47D pilot. I have been sitting in staff job for the last five years and would like to get back into flying. Since the Fixed Wing Qualification course was cancelled in 2012, I am only limited helicopters in the USAF. Does anyone know about any ANG/Reserve HH-60 units willing to accept out-of-state commuters?

Hi all! I was recently picked up for a slot flying CSAR helos at (unnamed unit). I’ve been super excited for the mission but it appears there has been a major drawdown in CSAR activity. Does anyone have any insight on the likelihood of full-time orders after training/the amount of hours per year one will likely fly? I want to be sure I have realistic expectations and a plan to have a civilian career in case a career flying helicopters becomes unlikely due to lack of hours. Any insight into that community would be hugely appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Hello everyone, In March I was hired with a unit and I'm in the middle of all the processing paperwork. I've gone to MEPS for them, swore in, and I'm in the middle of the background check. I've applied to a few units and my top choice was delayed a little but I just got notice that my top unit is offering me a job. It's the airframe and mission I want and it's where my family lives. The other unit is a bit far. I really want my top choice unit obviously as that is what would work best for me but I'm unsure how to proceed. My top unit knows I've already been hired at another unit but I'm unsure how to explain this to the unit that I was already hired at. Have other pe…

  11. I’m currently enlisted in the ANG. I Have all my tests done, bachelors degree, ready to apply to guard units. I’m currently in contact with a reserve recruiter for an unsponsored board. My question is, can I get hired unsponsored, and in the time frame of waiting to go to OTS, interview and get hired by a Gaurd Unit and take the Gaurd route instead? My basis for this is I’m 26 years old and I want to get the ball rolling on getting into UPT. I really want fighters and plan on sending my package to both Wisconsin and Minnesota or whatever unit has a hiring board in the next few months. Should I wait to go unsponsored until I hear back from these units or other Gaurd un…

I am 24 years old and plan on applying to both Reserve and ANG heavy units this Spring. I have my bachelors degree with a 3.33 GPA. My AFOQT scores are: P:79, N:73, AA: 79, V: 56, Q:88. My PPL checkride is scheduled for February 14th and currently have roughly 57 hours. I plan to get LOR from my CFI, my Scout Master (Eagle Scout), and a professor from college. I take the TBAS tomorrow and then will receive my PCSM. I know there is not much a way to tell me chances without a PCSM, however, if I do well on the TBAS and receive a good PCSM, is that the main factor considered? Or should I also retake the AFOQT? I know my scores are lower in Pilot and Nav than I would like th…

Hey guys, I apologize in advance for what may be a dumb post, however I cant seem to find any info on this after doing some searching. I am in the process of preparing my application for Reserve and ANG units, and intend on applying to as many locations as possible. I'm compiling a list of some locations and cant seem to find whether or not there is a reserve unit at Holloman, and if so, would such units send anyone to UPT, or is Holloman primarily a B-Course/training location? Thanks!

I just got notified I was selected in the AFRC board, and I am very excited. I want to start planning arrangements. I'm currently in a lease in a rental house, and I am about to buy a house. I am trying to figure out how it plays out when I get orders. I was hired as a traditional reservist so I will go back to being a part timer after training, and I will continue to live in another city then my squadron. Will I be given any kind of housing allowance for my current residence when I get orders for training? Does it make sense to go ahead and buy my house or will I need to cut all my liabilities from my current city while I am gone? I asked my squadron contact, and he s…

Hey everybody, The gouge I've found over this topic is a little dated, so hopefully somebody has more current info. Below is my situation: My unit submitted my pilot application package to the guard bureau this week (Monday) and said it will take 6-8 weeks to receive training dates (AMS, UPT, etc). Can anybody say that is a fairly accurate waiting time (I know everybody is different)? Is it 'normally' longer/shorter than that? I only ask because my wife was going to come with me to UPT but was just recently offered a very attractive job opportunity (one that cannot be passed up). However, we have a son that is due in the middle of February so we want to keep …

  17. Currently enjoying great success with a career in engineering but going to UPT soon. I don't plan to return to a full time engineering career and I desire to get away from the M-F 8-5 grind but still need to earn some coin and have some ambitions I'd like to act on. So, I think I will start my own small consulting company taking on small projects and performing consulting in my free time. Anybody else have their own business? What do you do and how do you balance it? Would appreciate any experience you could share, even if it's in a totally different field. Thanks!

  18. I tried searching and couldn't find anything on how often do units hire. Is it every year or is it once every few years? I'm a 27 year old junior in college and New Jersey is my top choice (I'm originally from there). Ideally, I would love any unit in the Northeast, Great Lakes States or even Idaho or Wyoming. I love cold weather, four seasons, lush forests, mountains, hockey and snowboarding. Right now I live in the south and it's not for me. I would prefer a fighter unit but I am fine with flying heavies. The other reason I would prefer to move back is I would like a Law Enforcement civilian career. In the Northeast and Great Lakes states, the police unio…

I am an enlisted guy who is going up for the home unit soon. I kept my mouth shut for the most part since I was a punk kid and my mil father advised me to, however, I am starting to wonder if I stayed to quiet? I have been told by some of my recs that I need to make sure that I socialize with the pilots. Anybody have any advice about how to act in the situations leading up to interview time.

  21. I am looking to contact the 122nd squadron (the New Orleans F-15 folks) to learn more about what they are looking for. However, when I went on their website (159th Fighter Wing) and called the number in the contact us page, I just went to the webmaster's voicemail. If someone could give me some direction on how to go about this, it would be much appreciated. I know talking to and meeting with the squad is very important to increase your chances as a candidate. Any response is welcome, I don't have many people around me who know much about the ANG and I've been trying to figure this out for a while.

I dont know if theres a subtopic that this topic fits under so Im just posting this here. Here is my story of how I got picked up by a KC-135 ANG unit. Roughly 2.5 years ago, at the ripe young age of 28, I decided to pursue this thing with all that I had. I got started so late because, in my youth, I made some stupid decisions. At 19 I failed out of college (straight up just kind of stopped going). I really dont have a good reason for having this attitude. I just had little motivation, wanted to hang out with friends, work, and just do things my own way. In some respects, I feel like I only enrolled in college because everyone else I knew from my high school did. So …

  23. So I will likely have an individual visit with a heavy unit next month. Right now they don't have any upcoming boards but are planning on one for likely summer 2022. As mentioned in my other thread, I have poor AFOQT scores and and TBAS score. I will be retaking before soon. Should I bring up this information at the visit? Or if they ask if casually like say "Hey have you taken the AFOQT and TBAS yet?" and I answer "yes" and they ask "how did you do?" Should I just be honest and let them know I am planning on retaking both to improve? Would this be a good sign that I am determined to correct my mistakes? Also I see on older threads from circa 2004-2008 on here,…
