  2. Apologies if this has been answered but I couldn't find it via search. I know how it works for those on the AD side, but unsure for guard. Hypothetical: If one currently lives in a state with 0% income tax and is selected by a guard unit in a state with double digit income tax, can you and your spouse maintain your domicile in the original state? For how long can you do so? Would it just be for the time from when you start (leaving for OTS) through the end of seasoning? Can you extend it indefinitely as long as you maintain full-time/active status? Do you lose it once you are no longer full-time/active status (and is that loss permanent)?

  3. Howdy. Both myself and a colleague at my unit finished UPT this past summer. Like many other MDS' our schoolhouse is extremely backed up and as a result (partially due to poor planning from the wing) we are facing a significant delay before we go to our B course. In my case it will be 9 months total of downtime (no flying) between UPT grad and going to IQT. I'd like to sell the idea of a fam ride program at my unit since the problem doesn't just affect me. Like I mentioned I have a colleague in the same boat and we have several new hires in the pipeline right now that will likely be in the same situation or worse. My thought was having some sort of structured fam rid…

So I've been trying to figure out my pay during OTS, UPT, and as a traditional reservist. Forgive me if some of these questions sound dumb, coming from the civ word and still figuring out the mil pay structure. Wondering If any one still in UPT, or just finished could give me an idea to some of the questions below. My civ employer offer's differential pay for long term and short term deployments. They consider anything under 30 days short term and over 30 days extended. They only pay dif pay for 12 months of any extended deployment. Question: Will OTS and UPT be separate orders? Or will I be considered "deployed" from day 1 of OTS until I become a traditional reservi…

I've tried using the search function, but I'm not quite finding what I'm looking for. I recently finished up my FC1 with no waivers needed and am waiting for the approval to come back from AETC before my package is sent to State HQ and NGB. At this point, is it truly just a waiting game to have all the boxes checked off, or would there still be for any reason my package would not be approved? The reason for asking is I'm getting into a bind at my civilian job where my potential replacement could be transferring out of the region within the next month, and my supervisor and I would really like to keep him here to be able to back fill my position once I'm off to OTS, UPT, e…

  7. Started by BC130S,

I’m curious to know if any Reserve member bound for the T-1A track has ever been able to / or could be able to switch to the T-38C track based on their performance during Phase II. Aside from their commitment to their sponsoring unit, and now that all Reserve members in UPT fall under the blanket of the 340FTG, would such a change ever be considered for a student with exceptional performance in Phase II, especially if it was suggested and recommended by their UPT FLT/CC? Likewise, we have seen some Reserve and Guard members who are fighter bound, but are unable to meet the standards required in Phase II to track to T-38s. Is there any consideration given to exchanging …

I've put together an updated list of all the UPT interview boards that are currently scheduled for 2017 (fighter units only), along with website links to the postings and phone numbers to call for more information. Obviously it is always changing so I plan on updating it every month. If you are interested, just respond to this post and I'll send you a link. Best of luck. Don't ever give up on the dream! GEKO

  11. I'm not sure if this belongs here but I didn't want to flood the "What Are My Chances" forum with this since my AFOQT isn't until September, and I'm not even done with school. Anyway, I've managed to make this life-goal of mine about as difficult as it can get through a combination of delays, procrastination, and despondency. I've mostly made up for all of that, and I'm about 90% of the way there now, but I fear I may end up being too late in the end. Like the title says, I'm feeling pretty discouraged and really just hoping to hear some words of wisdom from someone more experienced. I've been working hard to get my PPL and finish college the last few months. I'…

  14. Not sure if this is the right forum, but Battlespace Flight Services is hiring for deployed LR positions. I know several people there and the money is excellent. See the ad posted at guardreservejobs.com https://www.guardreservejobs.com/newjobboard/jobs/rpa-pilot-5/

  15. I'm guessing you are limited to 5 yrs Mil Leave in Federal positions. How does it work if you switch agencies- say Guard Tech to other Agency? Does the 5 yrs start over by Agency or is it all under OPM time?

Hello all, I'm a junior in college at a collegiate aviation program and was looking for info on joining an ANG unit(possibly Navy also). I have 3.5 GPA, about 200 hours, CFI, ME, IR, I have not taken ASTB or AFOQT yet but I have started studying(a little). Is this somewhat competitive? I have heard having prior flight experience is a huge help. Can I apply to out of state units? I assume fighter units are much more competitive than tanker/airlift. If anybody has any advice or info that'd be great.

  17. Baseops, I admit, I should know more about the in's/out's of mil retirement than I currently do but I'm reaching out to the guys who've been there and the pro's on here who know way more than I do. Handling finances with former spouse and they are asking for mil retirement value. I've been in for 3 years and told them (and my lawyer) that in the Guard its points based and those can vary year to year so it's hard to put a value to that (from my limited understanding). I confirmed this with my FM and personnel office (even had personnel office generate a letter stating that the 20/20/20 and 20/20/15 rules wouldn't allow my ex any $$ anyway). But even after all thi…

  18. Many moons ago I posted on here asking for advice about juggling my small business while going through UPT. I got a variety of comments and direct messages ranging from "hire a manager" to "I can't see how it would work" to "a friend of a friend did something like that". I ended up hiring a manager to run the place while I was gone and gave up a big chunk of my salary to do it. But I trusted him, and with my wife's help running admin stuff from behind the scenes I was able to keep and actually grow my business. I just pinned on pilot wings a couple of days ago and wanted to come back here to thank everyone for the encouragement and advice. I also am back here to…

  19. Hello everyone. I'm now a ROTC cadet looking at Reserve and Guard options. I should hopefully be commissioning in 2019. I have been searching for RPA and Space Ops units, but unsure which units are still operating with the same mission at this time, since most information online is from years ago. The ANG website is more straightforward, but the Air Force Reserve is not so much regarding what positions are available in which units. I'd greatly appreciate if any of you have information as to which units are available for me to consider applying to for ANG and ARC for RPA pilot and space operations officer positions. I know it's pretty early but ideally, I'd like to b…

  20. Started by MHS,

I'm a prior service active duty U.S. Army Aviation CPT RC-12/C-12 driver and current part-time Army National Guard CW2 C-12 IP/IFE/MTP. I fly ISR King Airs as a DoD Contractor overseas on a 60 on/60 off rotating schedule for my full time job and live in Vermont. Looking to cross over into the Blue to get my commission back and finish up the remainder of my military drilling career in the ANG. If possible, I'd like to chat with someone in the know about the 152nd AOG or flying MQ-9 RPAs in the 174th Attack Wing (NYANG). I have lots of prior CAOC, LNO, staff officer and overseas ISR piloting experience. I've tried both e-mailing and calling an ANG recruiter, but haven'…

  21. Started by UPT-hopeful,

Some units allow (and encourage) off the street folks to come visit prior to board interviews, which is cool. Other units strictly don't allow it. Is that their way of letting us know that they pretty much only hire within? Seems to me the chances of getting picked up to work with a unit for 20+ yrs based on a 5 page packet and a 20 minute interview are pretty slim. Thoughts?

  23. So I just got hired at a unit across the country. I currently am a homeowner and am okay with selling my house to make the move. I will need to move for UPT, PIQ, and finally to my unit. What assistance is provided to somebody in my situation? Thanks in advance for any help you could provide!
