Drelyn8, You brought up a good point in the fact that a lot of us throw around terms like Formal Release and people not yet in the military or at UPT/UNT may have no clue as to what they mean. Here's a few terms off the top of my head... FORMAL RELEASE - This is an Air Force thing. You don't leave until you flight commander releases you. Usually at the 11 hour and 59 minute mark, unless that doesn't give you 12 hours till the next days events, then it may be earlier. This usually ends at the end of final contact, about 6-8 weeks into Phase 2. It happens again in T-38's and T-1's. It sucks. FORMAL BRIEF - Usually happens first thing in the morning in Tweets. Th…

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get some input on what specific aerobatic maneuvers you do in UPT? I am doing aerobatic training in a Pitts just to get used to rolls, loops etc, and to better my flying, but I would also like to at least get a feel for some of the UPT maneuvers that are currently being used. Thanks, Aces

There are often new threads that don't need to be started since their information has been covered in the past and needs only to be revived and possibly updated. Here's the ROE on searching and starting new threads. 1. UTFSF: If there is a remote chance that your topic has been discussed, use the search function to find it and re-open that thread. 2. Get something close: It doesn't matter if your specific question was not answered - find a thread that is close and ask your question there. The intent is to consolidate discussion as much as possible so there are a minimal amount of threads discussing the same topic. 3. Disclaimers are unneccesary: You don't need to st…

Does anyone know when the board is meeting? I haven't been able to get on mypers in the past week with all the outages to check. I helped a buddy put his package together and I'm excited to see if he gets picked up.

Starting a thread for 2017 Active Duty board. There is an annoucement out on myPers and packages are due in November. One change from last year is that if you are medically eligible, you must select and rank all of the rated positions (Pilot, Nav, RPA, ABM). So basically if all you want is pilot and you are offered something else and decline, then you will no longer be eligible to apply to future boards. There is also a website on the AF Portal with some raw data on the selectees from the previous 3 years. Interesting to note that of the 14 who were selected last year, all 14 had PPLs. Food for thought.

Congratulations to all of those who got picked up for UFT 2017. You guys/gals earned every bit of it. Overall, a great year for the applicants. I am starting this new thread, not to hijack the 2017 UFT Active Duty thread that is already filled with valuable information, but to posture for the upcoming UFT 2018 AD boards that some may find useful--organization wise. Again, congrats to our bros who applied for UFT 2017 and got selected, and for those have high hopes for upcoming FY2018, let's keep working hard and charge ahead!

  10. First off, congrats to all of those that were selected for the 2018 board! I know the MyPers release has not dropped yet, but I wanted to go ahead and put this thread up because last year one of the board members was nice enough to reach out and give us info early on here. Also, it lets everyone thinking of applying get a head start on asking questions. Best of luck to everyone, and I look forward to seeing the updates!

Rumor control: I heard that active duty pulled (not sure how long ago) all of the 2020 UPT slots allocated for the ANG. Looking to see if anyone knows if that's true or not.

How competitive are A-10 units compare to other fighter units?

  19. Started by ChkHandleDn,

I recently talked to my hometown reserve unit, the 419th FW and they told me that its very difficult to get picked up for UPT if you're already in a active duty career field. I was just wondering if it would be extremely difficult for me to get a UPT slot if I'm in Acquisitions for a year.

Is it odd that the board still has not been announced for Jan 2015? I thought I read before that they have to announce the board at least 6 months prior the board meeting. Last year it was announced on 14 August and the year before was in June or July. It's almost September and still no board. Is that a sign it might not happen?

How difficult is it or how lucky does someone have to be to land a HH60 slot? If you are doing well at UPT and leadership knows thats the airframe you want is that something they can work on? Or is it basically just perfect timing on a drop?

  23. Just wondering if there is a specific way that letters of intent/cover letters and letters of recommendation should be addressed when applying to guard units. For example, should it be addressed the the squadron vs the wing? Any info would be much appreciated!

  24. Is it possible to improve on your overall board score in the AF? I recently found out that I was .7 points too low on my board score to be considered for a pilot slot. However, I scored high enough to qualify for an ABM position.

Studying for the AFOQT and having trouble finding great study information for the Aviation Knowledge section... Has anyone found a useful resource that will actually help prepare someone to crush that section? I have zero flying hours, will work on my PPL once I get home from my deployment, so that route for knowledge won't work for me. Preparing for the 2019 AD UPT Board.
