One of the more interesting AF press releases, and this one's long overdue! WASHINGTON - After decades of secrecy, the Air Force today acknowledged that it flew Communist-built fighters at the Tonopah Test Range northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. From 1977 through 1988, the program, known as CONSTANT PEG, saw U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine aircrews flying against Soviet-designed MiG fighters as part of a training program where American pilots could better learn how to defeat or evade the Communist bloc's fighters of the day. Brigadier General Hawk Carlisle, 3rd Wing commander at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, is a former member of the 4477th Test and Evaluation Squa…

I don't like to call dudes out, but one of our regular Base Ops contributors made a nice save the other day. Well done buddy, glad you're safe! Maybe we can get him to chime in and give us the lowdown! https://www.ksla.com/story/27624967/small-plane-crashes-in-red-river-in-shreveport SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Over a dozen emergency personnel responded to the scene of a plane crash. Shreveport police tell KSLA News 12 that a small single engine plane reported a mechanical failure just after 1:00 Sunday afternoon. Authorities say the plane made an emergency landing into the Red River about a half a mile north of Shreveport's Downtown Airport. Mark Crawford …

  7. So, I don't have a passport (gov or civilian). Yes, save me the lecture. My commander is open to releasing me a bit early because my replacement is getting out here early. I can hop on a Mil Air and get to Italy or Germany pretty easily. How difficult would it be to get home commercial from there? All I have are NATO Orders and military ID. If not commercial, Space-A?

  9. I'm trying to find an AFI or DoDI that covers postal benefits, but am not having any luck. I'm an exchange officer stationed in Europe 3 hours from the nearest APO and 7 hours from the nearest US base. Back in the day the USAF had a contract with DHL to deliver mail from the closest US base to my location once per week. Due to budget issues that went away but was replaced with a monthly TDY mail run. That soon changed to a quarterly TDY. That then changed to a quarterly mileage only TDY. That turned into nothing and I have no support at all. I now pay about $120 out of pocket and miss a day of work each time I want to check the mail. I wouldn't care about missin…

All, I am completing my Masters paper at ERAU by conducting a study of PRK and LASIK on pilots. If you have received refractive surgery and are flying, I would appreciate your time completing the survey at the following link: Refractive Surgery Survey If the link will not work the survey is located at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SN8WDZM The survey can be completed in just a few minutes and is totally anonymous. Toro has approved adding the survey link to this forum. Thank you for your time, J.

Hi everyone, I have been debating for a little while going into the guard/reserve. Currently I am working as a regional pilot based out of O'Hare. I am 27 and hold a bachelor's degree but my GPA is sitting at 2.6. I served 5 years in the Army guard as an engineer (enlisted). For my total time I have around 1700 hours with roughly 600 in the CRJ. My questions to you all is, do I stand a chance? I really don't care what I fly, heck it can be a Cessna 172. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

  12. Quick question, I checked the JFTR, but couldn't find much on the subject. Not sure it will come to this, but I'm trying to find out if I have any ability to file for reimbursement for a lost bag... Scenario - Last minute get switched from flying mil-air to flying a jet home, bag was put in pile to be loaded onto cargo pallet, a buddies bag was also with it. His bag made it home, mine did not. Communication from all the parties who handled the luggage has been good, but the bag hasn't turned up yet. A sweep of the TDY location didn't turn up any left bags, the pallet didn't have it when it arrived, and the crew of the aircraft doesn't have any additional bags th…

Howdy- I'm trying to plan my cross country (T-6) and want to remain overnight at KDWH. It's listed on the AETC Letter of Agreement list, which just means we can land/refuel there, right? I've got another list that's labeled "14 FTW Joint-Use Civilian Side Tracker", and KDWH isn't on there. I've been told by the step desk at Randolph that they indeed do remain overnight at KDWH, and that there's some AETC-wide RON tracker. Where can I find this? I asked my IPs, and haven't gotten a good answer. They keep referring me to the local 14 FTW list. Thanks!

Howdy, Ex-135 driver no longer on active duty. Can anyone steer me towards the proper reg/inst/pub that defines what qualifies as a remote assignment? Rumor says Laughlin was considered a remote many many years ago, then a new "front gate" was built and the base just squeaked under the mileage limit. No huge issue on this just curious. Cheers Chris

TLDR: General tells HASC today that big blue can replace 15's with Vipers.

Anyone ever done a Report of Survey? I got tagged by my squadron to be the investigating officer for some stolen/missing equipment. Have not found anybody in the squadron who has done one that has time to answer a few questions. It's an interesting additional duty but going through regs is a pain. Grandpa [ 08. 24. MOSCOW – A Russian Air Force chief said Saturday that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has offered an island as a temporary base for strategic Russian bombers, the Interfax news agency reported. The chief of staff of Russia's long range aviation, Maj. Gen. Anatoly Zhikharev, also said Cuba could be used to base the aircraft, Interfax reported. The Kremlin, however, said the situation was hypothetical. "The military is speaking about technical possibilities, that's all," Alexei Pavlov, a Kremlin official, told The Associated Press. "If there will be a development of the situation, then we can comment," he said. Zhikharev said Chavez had offered "a whole island …

  25. Searched to the old thread about the crash, but got an error when I selected it, a result of the recent forum maintenance? Report: Ice buildup caused Heathrow crash landing LONDON – A British accident report has confirmed that a buildup of ice in the fuel lines of a Boeing 777 jet caused its crash landing at London's Heathrow Airport two years ago. U.S. and European regulators moved to impose modifications to the engines of some jets after the British Airways plane fell 330 meters (1,080 feet) short of the airport's runway on Jan. 17, 2008. More than a dozen people were injured. Investigators had suspected that water usually present in aircraft fuel froze up, …
