Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Whoever said that Fairfield wasn't straight up gangsta?? The funny thing is that we drive through some of those streets on our way back to the base from Chipotle. If you're ever in the area on a RON, remember that Fairfield south of Air Base Parkway is not where you should be after the sun goes down! Ref:

THE UNTOLD TRUE STORY OF MAD DOG SHRIVER: Mad Dog led dozens of covert missions into Laos & Cambodia until his luck ran out. By Maj. John L. Plaster, USAR (Ret.) <https://www.ultimatesniper.com/images/macVsog-patch.GIF> There undoubtedly was not a single recon man in SOG more accomplished or renowned than Mad Dog Shriver. Mad Dog! In the late 1960s, no Special Forces trooper at Ft. Bragg even breathed those top secret letters, "S-O-G," but everyone had heard of the legendary Studies and Observations Group Green Beret recon team leader, Sergeant First Class Jerry Shriver, dubbed a "mad dog" by Radio Hanoi. It was Jerry Shriver who'd spoken the most famous …

I could of sworn we had a thread solely dedicated to naming planes in them, but no luck. This popped up on a website I frequent, and I was wondering if anyone knows what it is, the confusing this is it looks like it has wings on it.

Did a search, came up with nothing. Anybody lived in Clovis who can give me a good idea of what the cell phone service situation is out there? I'm looking to get rid of Sprint and maybe get an iphone but when I look at the coverage maps it is less than stellar, considering I'd have to roam on someone else's network (not sure whose). Thoughts?

Anyone here interested in getting a Baseops fantasy football league going this year? If so, I set up a private league over at ESPN. I was able to log in while deployed @ Dhafra, so you should be able to access your lineup in the AOR...that is unless you're @ the Deid (most likely). There's room for a total of 10 teams, and its free. Here's the link: Fantasy Foosball 08 League name: Baseops Password: gucci

I have been sitting on some savings for about a year now, which has been in a high-yield savings account up to this point. My son is now 2.5 years old, and it's time to stop being lazy and get this money into an investment that will earn more than 3%. I've read about several options, including 529 plans, Coverdell educational IRAs, and pre-paid tuition. I'm looking to retain control of the funds and also ensure that I can get at them in the event he gets a scholarship, academy, or doesn't go to college. I don't manage money for a living, so any advice is appreciated!

Anybody watching this new series on HBO? It's being referred to as Band of Brothers meets the Iraq war. Not sure it will be as good but I watched the first episode last week. The Sergeant Major reminded me of a lot of the bitching from the Deid thread, yelling at people to tuck in their shirts while turning wrenches on a Humvee in the middle of the desert. Does that mentality really make its way into even the Marine Corp? Anyways, seems like it will be interesting and HBO usually comes up with some pretty good mini-series.

Tell-all interview covers Iraq withdrawal, nuclear report, procurement and more The June 5 forced resignations of Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne and Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley — the first time in U.S. history the top uniformed and civilian leaders of any service were ousted simultaneously — shocked the Air Force and highlighted deep fissures between the Pentagon and Air Force leadership. Wynne sat down July 9 for a wide-ranging discussion with Military Times editors and reporters, explaining why he was really fired, what went wrong with the nuclear enterprise, what can be done about Iraq and how he sees the future of the Air Force. The questions…

Figured I'd throw this out there since nobody I know can answer it. Why are the UK banks offer such high interest rates with very few restrictions. My friends account has a 1000 gbp minimum but gathers 8-9% monthly with no fee and the only restriction is that if you make any withdraws for that month you accrue 0 interest for that month. Best stateside rate I can find is 3.2% with ING. Can someone help me out here.

Need a little help. A bud of mine was just commissioned in the Navy Reserve. There was a Simpsons episode where Homer joined the Navy Reserve that had a great commercial that went "Daybreak, Jakarta. The proud men and women of the Navy are protecting America's interests overseas, but you're in Lubbock, Texas hosing down a statue, because your in the Naval Reserve. Once you complete basic training, you only work one weekend a month, and most of that time your drunk of your ass. The Naval Reserve: America's 17th line of defense, between the Mississippi National Guard, and the American League of Women Voters." I am trying to find a video clip of the commercial from that…

Anybody else watching and enjoying the soccer currently being shown on ESPN? I grew up in Pakistan and Taiwan so played soccer my whole life and really love it when we get some good soccer on ESPN. I personally think Croatia was screwed with the extra time in their game/match against Turkey. But how can you not be excited about Turkey and their 3 come from behind victories so far. If you like soccer you've no doubt enjoyed some great soccer so far!

Well the mudslinging has begun. A few AFSOC dudes who will soon be PCSing to Cannon put together a video with pictures from a recent visit. If you look at the comments on the Youtube page, the debate is already getting ugly. I heard second-hand that this video made it to a recent mayoral debate, their answer...and this is takes the cake..."If they don't like it here, let them volunteer to go to Iraq". Hey Clovis... I know there are quite a few witty/creative individuals on this forum...and I am not one of them! I need help coming up with a name for a PIT crash pad I purchased down in Cibolo TX (Randolph AFB). Here is the deal! I bought this brand new 4 bdrm home and have spent over $20K on furnishing this place like a luxury hotel. Here is the premise....I have stayed at Randolph's billeting several times and admit it's not too bad for a short-term stay, but lacks the comforts of a home for long-term use. I am trying to provide a better option for single dudes wishing to stay off base while going through PIT training but at the same rate as billeting ($27 per night). I will ha…

Those who know him know what I am talking about, and the rest of you will just have to take my word for it; but it is a substantial achievement for any Air Force officer and I can think of no one more worthy than CH! CH, I wish I could have been there to celebrate with you, but my schedule just wouldn’t allow it. But I will toast your accomplishment this evening in line with Air Force traditions! Cheers! M2

I don't think this topic has come up yet... Now that it's the holiday season and we're doing a lot of traveling, I bet lots of us are ducking into the USOs at airports all across the country. If you're military and you HAVEN'T been into a USO on a layover...well, you're missing out. These folks know how to make travel bearable. I'm sitting at DFW in the USO right now getting free highspeed wireless and charging my battery for the flight to Chicago. I don't really mind the layover when the refreshments are free and I can watch the game and whore up BaseOps. So what are the "best" USOs you've seen? Any gouge on what's good...and what's not?
