Gun Talk

Yeah, I got a helluva deal on mine. I had an Army bud heading to Iraq who asked me to "gun sit"his while he was gone. It was a pristine example with beautiful furniture on it, and very accurate (I had shot it before). Here are a couple of pics...

When he got back, he wanted to buy an old M1911 so once he found one, I gave him cash for it. That had been my plan from the onsete, figuring out a way to separate him from this beautiful AKM...

Do you guys know if VEPRs are still being imported? The prices I've seen have been through the roof lately.

Ya mean one of these?

Looking for a Russian mail-order bride? :nob::bohica::bash::thumbsup:

Just kidding, of course. I haven't seen one but I haven't been looking either. If you haven't already, ou might want to try:

Robarm at http://www.robarm.com/, Email: zdf@robarm.com, Phone: 801-485-1012

And if you order one through them, mention AK-47.net. I think that'll get you a discount.

Or try looking here.

Good luck!

There are people here who know way more than me so I'm not going to rank manufacturers. I have two Bushmasters though, both have been excellent. A Varminter that is a blast and an M4 for when the Russians come (as our governer pointed out, we can see Russia from here). Have a number of friends that have them, uniformly good reviews. I'd recommend Bushmaster to anyone.

I have a bud with a couple Amalites, an AR10 and AR15. He had some problems with the 10 (extraction, incredibly bad groups). But he sent it back and they essentially replaced the entire thing with no harassment. I guess they had some manufacturing defect for a while there that is supposed to be fixed. At least they had good customer service. Damned expensive though.

Here is an excellent source of info on the AR15. This table and associated explanations will help you make a decision on an AR...

http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=6642

As you can see the Bushmaster is a good gun (BTW did you see pictures of the Bushmasters the Russians captured in Georgia?) but there are some others with more desirable features. Of concern to me when I see a Bushmaster gun is how the gas key is staked (so that the screws don't back out while firing) and the commercial receiver extension (just need to buy the right stock). They also have an issue with their front sight being slightly too short for easy use with a rear back-up iron sight - their fix is to have a longer front sight post while other companies use a taller sight housing.

BF

I haven't seen a Vepr in a while - what is the big draw to that particular type?

I talked with Robarms about it when I bought my XCR and was told they no longer import them. I don't know if that means no US company does. They used to be 500$ or so and now the price is in the 900's$ new.

So I am getting pretty close to pulling the trigger (no pun intended) on an M1A/M14. But I will be in a dorm on base so thus have to check it in with SF...

So...how badly will they mess with it? I would like to try and leave a trigger lock on it so they can't shoot it. Is that possible? Any horror stories?

No triggers locks or locked cases allowed. I'm taking my guns out on Friday after 4 months in there (finally moving off base). I'll let you know.

You could just take the whole trigger housing off the rifle. Or just take the bolt out. Don't know how difficult that is with the M1A.

Better solution is to find someone off base and store it with them.

And I wonder what their BS logic is behind that rule?!?

I would rather pay for storage somewhere than to let the ham-fisted sky cops mess with any of my guns! And yes, I used to be one, so I know of what I speak!

So you know for a fact that SF will shoot other people's guns? And this goes unnoticed by the first shirt, senior nco's, and the officers?!

I have asked MANY SF folks this over the years, and invariably they say, "Hell yeah we shoot 'em!" I also have two friends, at different bases, who had their guns (rifles, pistols, and shotguns) returned to them showing obvious signs of having been fired while in the loving care of SF.

FWIW I always just kept mine in the house when living on base. Of course, no house inspections to worry about vs. the dorms like you mentioned.

And I have heard the same from firsthand sources.

Plus, there is no reason whatsoever for the sky cops to not allow a person to put a lock on their own gun. Absolutely none! As a matter of fact, it should be required that people have their own locks on their guns before they put them in the armory. C'mon, even TSA requires you to keep your weapon locked while transporting it in your luggage. The only reason the fucking cops don't want you to lock it is because they want to shoot it!

Fuck them! If anyone is in the San Antonio area and runs up against this, I will be more than happy to store your weapons at my house. Of course, you also won't be able to put a lock on them when I am holding them for you; but at least you know they were in the hands of a competent shooter! :M16:

The weapons I see the sky cops carrying where I work look like shit! I wouldn't even accept one if it were issued to me. Hell, I have a tough enough time keeping the retired Marine Gunny I work with from ripping their heads off when he sees how bad their weapons look. It is embarassing...

Of all the options for "scary black", what is the caliber that is most expensive/cheapest? I searched, and spent a couple hours reading all 15 pages of this, but couldn't find that specific answer. There are a couple of hints to it, but no definitive answer.

Funny thing. I was at the range two weeks ago, they gave me a gun that looked like it'd been ridden more than Seattle Slough. No kidding: the barrel lock actually spilled out in two pieces when I disassembled for cleaning after we were done. At first I felt a little jealous of my bro's next to me who had guns that looked fresh off the line.

UNTIL...I started shooting that is; there was absolutely no trigger break: surprised the s#!+ out of me on one DA shot. I took the bet that day on the range.

Cheapest I'm going with .223....but you can probably get 7.62 of AK variety for less

Expensive I'm going with .50 BMG....but skies really the limit on the high end.

I'm totally outclassed on this topic, just felt like throwing a vote in

M2 preaches about the XD in handgun; guess I'm also looking for him to just tell me what brand/type to buy for a AR-15 or AK-47 (preferably on the cheap side)....or any other person in the know.

I own an XD already. Absolutely love it.

My problem is this. I'm about to PCS back to the states (Nellis), and I would like to buy a gun now. Before I thought it would be a simple matter, but now with the revelation (to me anyway) about the straw man law I don't want to do anything stupid. I'm also worried that prices will jump on election day, and I don't get to the states until a week after. I realize that nothing will likely be done anytime soon, but worry that just the scare of AWB II, and other potential new and bad laws will spike the prices early. If this is unwarranted I won't worry about it, so some of you more politically savvy people let me know.

Otherwise, is there a way for me to buy a weapon now before I get to the states. Would it be legal to buy it through a friend or something, and just keep it with them until I get there?

I know, this is probably pretty ignorant, but that's what I am right now. I figure you guys might be able to steer me in the right direction.

If you are talking assault rifles, as I mentioned I just picked up 1000 rounds of Monarch (Russian-made) 7.62x39 for $149.50. That is an exceptionally sweet deal, and tough to beat even at the gun shows

As for .45ACP, believe it or not WalMart has been the best source. I get 100 rounds of Winchester White Box for $29. I only use it for range ammo, prefering Federal HydraShok HPs for self-defense, but all my .45s eat it like candy. Never had a problem with any loading or ejecting, but it is a little dirty.

And you probably already know this, but for the rest of the crowd never, ever buy reloads from someone you don't know. My Canadian bud did so at a local gun show, and had all kinds of problems with them. Either reload yourself, or find someone you can trust and go back to if there are any problems.

As for buying a gun before coming back, if you get it through a dealer I am sure they won't have a problem holding it for a few months for you, especially if you paid in advance for it. Or if you know where you are going, maybe the FFL you send it to will do the same for a nominal fee (if any). A straw purchase really only comes into play when the second recipient of the gun is not eligible to own it in the first place, like the two punks at Columbine. The problem with the aforementioned California bud is that he normally could not buy a weapon in another state and take it back to a state where he couldn't buy it in the first place. I don't think any of that applies in your case, so if the situation was you were PCS'ing to San Antonio, and wanted an AK-47; I could purchase one for you and then sell it to you when you arrived here, as you would be legally able to buy one yourself under Texas law. But next week when I go TDY to Charleston, where I could not buy a weapon because I am not a S.C. resident; I could not have someone who lives there buy it then turn around and sell it to me. The solution would be to have it sent to a FFL back here in Texas. Of course, private sales are different; but to avoid any problems I would stay within the confines of the laws for business sales of weapons when outside of my own home state.

You do know that Arsenal, probably one of the best US-made AK-47s builders out there, is in Las Vegas, right?

Cheers! M2

You can get a 9mm AR15. You can also get a conversion kit that will allow you to shoot .22lr.

Actually the store I was at last week said the price of .223 has skyrocketed. We're using a significant amount of the supply in our operations abroad so the retail price has gone up a lot. I believe 7.62 can be had for cheaper than .223 now.

Hadn't heard that. Mil uses a lot of 7.62 as well, so I'd think they'd rise in tandom

But as others have pointed out, you can get an AR in 22LR, which is pretty dang hard to beat price wise.

The 5.56 NATO is derived from, but not entirely interchangeable with, the .223 Remington cartridge...military cases are generally made from thicker brass than commercial cases and the NATO specification allows a higher chamber pressure.

Using commercial .223 cartridges in a 5.56-chambered rifle should work reliably, but generally will not be as accurate as when fired from a .223-chambered gun.

7.62 is plentiful as the AK is the most commonly-built assault rifle in the world. Its numbers far exceed those of the AR; and with a few exceptions, it is not used by US military forces...

i think it is being missed that there are multiple types of totally different 7.62

7.62x39mm this is what your ak's and sks's use

7.62x51mm NATO this is what M1A, M14's and M60's shoot

these are the main 2 types there are also quite a few other 7.62 in pistol and rifle configurations. 7.62x25, 7.62x54R etc.

I went with a S&W MP15A. I did some research on it, everyone loves it, supposed to shoot great out of the box. Lots of options to upgrade/add accessories in the future. Buds will hold it for me until I get back to the states early Nov. then ship it to me. Thanks for all the help and advice. I'll let you know how it shoots by the end of November/early December hopefully. Probably not as cheap as the AK, but I'm okay with that.

M2,

I have convinced my wife on the Mossberg you have. Just need to wait a little so the sticker shock wears off from this one. It will be nice to get back to the states where I can shoot again.

S&W MP15A...nice! If Bud's needs to send it someplace before you get back, feel free to give them my address. I'll make sure it's broken in nicely when you get here!

And the Mossberg Persuaders can still be found ~$300-350 at most gun shows here; but if your intent is to let the wife use it for self-defense, don't ever let her shoot it beforehand. That sucker is a real modern-day blunderbuss, it kicks like a mule but with the right set-up I think it is the perfect close-quarters home defense weapon there is! Load it up with some 3" Magnum 00-buck and smile if the bad guy thinks he can hide behind your leather couch for protection! Hell, I would shoot through walls with that sucker without hesitation if someone were hiding behind one! But put 30-50 rounds through one at the range and I guarantee you will be bruised up pretty bad!

Cheers! M2
