  1. "VFR On Top" is for aircraft on an IFR flight plan https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/atc/atc0703.html "VFR Over The Top" is for aircraft who are NOT on an IFR flight plan https://www.risingup.com/fars/info/part1-1-FAR.shtml (scroll down to the definition of VFR Over the Top; the definition for VFR on Top can be found by scrolling up to "IFR Over The Top") https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/publications/tp14371-rac-2-0-2599.htm#2-7-4
  2. Privilege has NEVER been automatic. When you provide a written statement, you sign first you understand that you are giving a privileged statement, or giving a non-privileged statement. If being verbally interviewed, you read the privilege or non-privilege statement out loud. The only reason a statement given under the promise of confidentiality can be released is if it's determined the individual lied in that statement.
  3. flew 3 Southwest Airlines legs this week, and every single one was a VFR approach to the airport (LAS, ABQ, and TUS). Established downwind leg turning base to final, and none of them under or overshot final. Had a copilot a few weeks back when we were flying VFR cross country who didn't know "nee odd sweeven" (but both the FE and gunner knew it).
  4. well until all airframes have EFBs, BOPS should not be able to decide on their own to not continue ordering sectionals, etc. That's a huge foul.
  5. There is no prelim msg requirement for a Class E, only a 30-day final msg or status msg update, so you'd have to search AFSAS for the mishap date to see if anything is in there (and all you'd get to see would be the one-liner) before the 30 day mark.
  6. During our OPD session with the RQG/CC today, I learned that there's something in the works to get rocket pods installed on the HC, and talk of a further upgrade to mount .50 cals below said pods. Given his drive to get the HC back into an RMC role, this doesn't surprise me, and would seem to be well suited for that role.
  7. M2, base on your earlier discussion, I bought a Suunto Core Regular Black last week on Amazon ($215), and it arrived 2 days ago. Love it! Hopefully my 30 day assessment is along the lines of yours.
  8. there is one J at DM. I HAAR'd off it Tues night. There is an HC WIC standing up at DM, with the first class slated to be 14A. I'm not sure when the 79th will be IOC, so those who haven't jet gone for the J transition have been augmenting with the 71st for their deployments. Sooner rather than later, tho, all the 79th folks will be J qual'd, waiting for taskings.
  9. Was it an african Globemaster or a european Globemaster?
  10. RWQC doesn't exist for the AF anymore (reference dodo in busdriver's post). Pretty sure everyone does the full 6 months at Rucker now, regardless of background.
  11. he was referring to the helo functional...outside of coming from another RW platform, the only way I've seen FW bubbas come over to the dark side is by getting hired by one of the Guard/Reserve units that flies 60s.
  12. just finished The Forgotten 500: The Untold Story of the Men Who Risked All For the Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II by Gregory A Freeman. Great read!
  13. damn, people, it's not that hard to spell someone's name correctly, especially when he's about to be our next CSAF! Welsh.
  14. do PIT TDY orders specify it as an accompanied TDY? If not, then they aren't doing anything wrong or unexpected.
  15. actually, the maxofacial shield was designed originally for the frontenters, to mitigate smaking your face on the cyclic in the event of a crash. Only a bene for the backenders as mentioned above, and it's also great to keep the dust out of your face when doing brownouts with doors off (all crew positions). you've been hanging out with Ralph Royce too much
  16. MC-12 is at Beale. U-2 is at Beale. Big move for the family there...
  17. yes to on base, no to off base. And your quarantines starts the day you get your pets' blood drawn for the rabies test. My cats 180 day quarantine was served entirely in CONUS before I PCS'd. The Japanese vet site is accurate. https://www.kadena.af.mil/library/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=16520
  18. what is this Fighting Falcon you keep referring to?
  19. then it needs to be added to the Additional Authorizations tab or whatever as a choice (the same place you select Variations Authorized). If you can just check a fucking box about the VTC bs, that keeps the RA off your back.
  20. in 02-03, they tried to make it a 3 month course (just the RWQC portion), but that pilot didn't do well at Kirtland, so they sent her back to Rucker for the full 6 months. Not sure if it's changed since then. 2 on the integrated with the UPT class. Oh, and as for "UPT-style", those who came from an AF UPT base said it was less hard than their phase II experience. I came from Whiting, where it was then a little bit of a step up. This was the 03 timeframe, so take it with a grain of salt until a more recent grad can chime in.
  21. the AFSAS final msg is out. Go talk to your SE folks.
  22. so how do you get guys who have flown T-38s (is that still a requirement?), if fighter and bomber pilots are off limits these days?
  23. wrong. the purpose of a MOA is to seperate IFR traffic from non-hazardous military traffic. Joe Schmoe in his C-172 can blaze a VFR trail through your MOA any day of the week, without even talking to anyone, and it's completely legal. And stupid. At least the sectionals include MOA freqs now, so Joe Schmoe can choose to check in if he wants...
  24. 80 kph (on the expressway) is the fasted speed limit on island. Most surface streets (every other road on Oki) start at 60 kph and go down from there.
