I'm trying to get some info/differentiate between overseas short tours, long tours, remotes, and deployments such as CAOC tours. What are the differences between them? I'm browsing the AFI nunya posted and am under the impression that a short tour is one that is generally unaccompanied and less than 365 but can also be 18 months. And a long tour is any location accompanied or unaccompanied for 365+? These can either be flying and non flying right? What generally drives the requirement to do a short or long tour? Are they mostly volunteer, or are people voluntold? What about the CAOC? Is that one of those mandatory check boxes in order to stay in? Also, does an overseas assignment to somewhere like Kadena count the same as any other long overseas or remote tour? Are all of these "highly recommended" at some point in the aviation career, meaning if you don't volunteer for them at least once in your career you can count on getting stuck with one later on? Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I believe it's 15 credits.

Both. Not only has she had her fair share of cheeseburgers and super-sized fries, but she definitely seemed to have a few screws loose.

That's weird. Sounds like you got screwed. We just got back from there and it was only two to a room. I saw a sign posted on a door saying they were moving all of them to two to a room. I saw her...ewww. She was so excited in telling us how she collects squadron patches and scans them for her gay little poster board at her desk. She's definitely a few french fries short of a happy meal.

So I was watching the awesome 24/7 propaganda network known as AFN the other day and saw a documentary on Army training. These guys are busting in doors, low crawling, being all tactical, yet all were wearing reflective belts. On another note, to go along w/ the IHRB and The 'Deid thread, would anyone be interested in some Anti-Shoeclerk tabs? I only wanted one made, but ended up getting like 20.

The question I have is if we're deployed and contribute to this, can we still use this after we return from our deployment if we continue to earn hostile fire pay and fly in a combat zone? The email I received states the following w/ regards to the SDP: "Members must be receiving Hostile Fire Pay and be deployed for at least 30 consecutive days, or 1 day in each of 3 consecutive months in order to participate in the program. The way I read this is as long as I'm in a combat zone for at least one day in 3 consecutive months I can continue to use the program. Am I correct in this assumption? Basically I return from my deployment, fly a trip at least once a month downrange for at least three months, earn HFP and still use this?

Yeah it did sound to good to be true.

So lately I've heard from a couple of people that once you log 100 hrs on NVGs, you qualify for 20% disability. Is this true? If so, where is it written?

After living on base during pilot training and dealing w/ Pinnacle and all their BS, we told ourselves we'd never live on base again. If you have little kids though, base might not be a bad option. If you're single, or you and the wife are DINKs, I advise living off base. I have no problem communting 40 minutes from where I currently live. The drive isn't bad at all since it's all back roads. Besides, when you're on trips you're not commuting anyway. There is nothing w/in 30 minutes of base that's fun to do. If you're married, your wife would be bored out of her mind. The BX can only be so fun. Also, on weekends you'll end up driving 30-40 mins away anyway so why not live off base? We lived on base for about three weeks and we drove off base every night about 30-40 minutes for dinner, friends, etc.

Of course there are ways around the above. Remain a resident of your home state and don't buy or plan on buying a gun here. You can go to the range at Dix and shoot w/ no issues (no gun card, etc) since you're just "passing through." Or just go to PA for your shooting. It's about 20 mins from where I live. I stocked up on ammo before I got here too. But if you really want to shoot there are ways around it. To avoid paying this commie state, don't become a resident of NJ (if you're married and the wife gets a job, she doesn't have a choice). Also, avoid buying property here. Not only are the property taxes extremely high, but home prices are outrageous. I thought UT was bad until I got here. It's amazing what 200K-300K would buy in UT compared to here. Other than that, we really like S. Jersey. It's clean, there's a lot to do, and it beats Del Rio.

I know a lot of -17 folks hate on McGuire, but we actually love it here. We were apprehensive when we got our assignment here because all that came to mind when we heard of NJ were fist-pumping guidos, the Soprano's and "Mah new foockin' haircut!" However, it's a stone's throw away from everything. NYC is an hour train ride away. DC is 1.5 hours by train. Philly and the shore are only 45 mins away. Where else can you go to NYC for a day and Philly the next? Yeah Charleston has "history." But after you see the downtown and the beach, what else do you have? Travis has wine tours and traffic. Hickham has surfing and island fever. McChord has rain and hippies. Elmo has snow and eskimos. And Mcguire? We have high ass property taxes, stupid jug handles, and gay gun laws. But it's not a bad assignment by any means. I actually like it better than my previous base, Hill AFB. Take that FWIW. Good luck on your assignment.

Packing list can be found under AF PORTAL if you search SV80. Here is also the student handout: SV80 Handout. It hasn't been updated since August, but it should give you a start. Gortex is Gortex. Bring it and help a bro out. If no one wants them, you can leave them in your room before you leave. No rank in the field/RTL. They don't allow you to wear metal rank, so don't bother buying it. I was promoted a few days before I left ,so I kept my old rank on my BDUs in the field and new rank on my flight suit during RTL. They don't care. You just have to be in proper uniform during academics. Doesn't matter on the shirts, just make them comfortable. Our instructor didn't care about Under Armour either. And you are definitely overanalyzing.

I figured I'd add my two cents for summer since most of the previously mentioned items to bring were for winter. -Buy a mosquito net for the head. I slept in mine and didn't have any problems. Those that didn't have one, weren't so lucky. (The sell these at the survival BX--sold out at times though) -100% deet. Two bottles at least. Mosquitos are non-stop during the summer. (Can be bought at the BX, sometimes sold out though) -Wear BDUs instead of the flight suit in the field. The skeeters nailed peeps right through the bag, but I never had a problem with them while in BDUs. It's also easier to take off the top when hiking...and shitting. -Gortex pants. Fvck the jacket. It was a waste of space even when it was raining. The panchos were adequate. But the gortex pants were money. If you have 'em, bring 'em. -As mentioned before, bring a headlamp -Don't bring a camel back. I brought mine and it was a PITA. They make you carry a water bag on you at all times anyway. -Buy the $99 Stars and Stripes Shuttle pass. You'll go into town almost every night for dinner during academics...or at least you should. It's 100% reimbursable.

You got me on that one, but Enwei isn't exactly a name you hear/see every day. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that these two are commissioning and are very appreciate of their country. I'm not suspicious of their motives, but of Obama's.

Good for them; but it appears he's only doing it because they both have Middle Eastern names/backgrounds. I could be wrong though.

I got something else in the e-mail that was interesting. The latest theory is that the flyover will be used to promote the new movie "Red Tails" about the Tuskegee Airmen. Interesting indeed. Red Tails -
Wow, XL I thought you were smarter than that.

I know most gyms don't have rings, so I made my own. $20 at Home Depot for the materials and about an hour of your time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V8C-fOP5c4.

Is it "The Great Waldo Pepper?" Or something along those lines? "Battle of Britain" was good and there was another one about WWII Mosquito pilots, "633 Squadron," that was pretty good too.

Are they sticklers w/ regards to rank/patches sewn on the BDUs out in the field? I want to wear the BDUs in the field, but I get promoted a few days prior to my arrival at SERE. I really don't want to get rank/wings sewn on BDUs I'll never wear again if I don't have to.

I took a look at TXDOT's website and here's what it says w/ regards to sales tax for mil folks: "Texas Law Requires: -If you are a new Texas resident, you pay a one time use tax of $90 -If you are a resident of TX and have not previously paid a TX sales tax on the vehicle, in lieu of the $90, you pay either a 6.25 percent sales tax or the difference of what was previously paid to another state." Link to the packet here: Mil Packet So I guess even if I wait a few months to register the vehicle in TX after having it titled and registered in SC, I still get to pay the 6.25% less the $300 I pay SC; whereas NJ allows an exemption. Seems like NJ has the better deal w/ regards to that. Thanks for the help Viper!
