You can be RNAV without GNSS. You can be RNAV with INS only or even just NAVAIDs depending on how the system is certified. You need RNAV to proceed direct to a fix. You don’t need GNSS to do it. The key concept is a system that allows you to navigate to a steer point without having to resort to the pencil method...and it must be one that is certified for the airspace in which it is used. -

My info was pre-2017 when Aero was being developed in-house at the NGA. It’s sad that the DoD paid $17M for that junk app when the ForeFlight+Jeppesen data contract for the entire DoD is several million less. Aero is shit. The only thing it does decently is Giant Reports and that is only because the NGA intentionally cut ForeFlight out of getting Giant Reports from the NGA.

DoD did not pay a dime to develop Aero. That is an internal product developed by some NGA guys on their own time. It is not a program and has no official recognition or funding. That’s a large part of why it is a giant steaming pile of shit. Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app

It doesn’t take much longer to TERPS a conventional approach either. It is also done remotely by the MAJCOM that “owns” that airfield (not your MAJCOM). They can’t and don’t flight check it which is why the Giant Reports ask for crews to do a flyability check. In fact, the most common reason why an approach never makes it into DoD FLIP after the MAJCOM does the review is publication requires a flyability check and no one ever does them. Boy, I wish I knew something about FTIP reviews, procedure validation, US TERPS, PANS-OPS, MIPS, comparison reviews, accreditation, the DoD HN Accepted list, or any of this. Thanks for the lesson. GPS approaches are easy to work with...until I shut off your access to GPS from the ground.
Even with GPS based procedures you still need TERPS.
In AMC, this advice will put you in the bottom 15% and you won’t make Lt Col.
Probably non-compliant in some important way and the AF chose to ignore the problem at least 10 years ago instead of starting the fix then. AMC pilots barely speak Area Navigation. The AF is at least 25 years behind except the KC-46 avionics. And many the GNS-430 or 530 in the UH-1.
Superchargers can put 200 miles in “the tank” in 15 minutes. The navigation app also knows where superchargers are and you can plan the stops...along major highways...in advance. You’re full of shit.
