Hello all, this is my first post on the threads. I'm looking to get a pilot slot. I'd take c-17 or c-130, but I'd love to get into a fighter (f-15/f-16) slot. Here are my credentials: Age: 27 Degree: BS in Mechanical Engineering (3.2 GPA) from URI AFOQT: 99/99/99/98/95 PCSM: 94 Flying time: PPL with 80 hrs Currently an E6 in the RIANG with 10 years in Letters: Strong letter from sqd cdr (O5), strong letter from sxn lead (E8), good letter from sup (E8) I'd say I have good interview skills. I've never had a job interview from which I didn't get an offer. However, I've heard the interviews have more casual questions (tell me a joke, wh…

To make a long story short, I'm partially blind in one eye. I have a blind spot in my central vision that leaves me with normal peripheral vision, but no foveal acuity. It's a stable condition, but can't be fixed. Let's call that eye 20/400 and completely uncorrectable. I'm 20/25 or so in the other eye, easily correctable to 20/20. I'm having a hard time finding this definitively, but from what I can gather, I simply won't be able to fly jets for the military. Am I correct that a waiver or exception for 20/400 is simply not a possibility, despite being correctable to 20/20 in the other eye? For what it's worth, my vision hasn't held me back at all as far as…

Hi all, I would like to apply for the various UPT slots this spring. I am 28 years old and civilian, turning 29 in March which is prior to many of the upcoming boards. My only military experience is a semester of AFROTC as a freshman in college 10 years ago. I did sit for the AFOQT during that time though and I was able to find my score. I'm currently working as a structural engineer. I have a master's degree and good GPA's. Hoping to apply for a fighter slot. I'd like to try until I hit 30 and then apply for heavies. I would appreciate any feedback on my info below. Also, I had a question about the AFOQT scores. Will the boards care that I took them in 2009 and didn…

I grew up always getting in trouble, but when I was 16 I realized what I wanted to do. My dream is to become a military pilot flying for the guard. Being arrested over 10 times for minor things such as truancy, trespasing, etc. prevent someone from getting in? I currently have all my licenses and just graduated from college with a solid 3.9 GPA in ME, I'm also 25, any chances?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I can gauge people's thoughts or experiences on flight hours and PPL. I am currently applying to a couple of fighter units but as of application time, I do not yet have my ppl (only about 20hrs). Correspondingly my PCSM score is kind of low at mid 700s however with 201+ hours it would be in the 90s. I aim to complete my PPL by end of March but a lot of units have their application deadline beforehand. Do you think that units would simply look at the initial score and flight hours or if I mention that i'm actively pursuing to complete it the units would take that into consideration? How heavily weighted is flight hours essentially …

Looking for any insight as to how my odds are looking for Guard/Reserve pilot slots. I'm open to all aircraft, and really just want to be in a unit that I'd fit in with, and to possibly spend 20+ years there. I'm prior AF Active duty, and now in the Reserve as an E5. Here are my stats: 24 years old PCSM: 78 (poor TBAS performance) AFOQT Pilot: 99 Flight hours: 62, with PPL GPA: 3.4 Letters of Rec from my O-4 flight commander from Active, O-5 flight commander from reserve, civilian flight instructor, and MSgt supervisor. I can retake the TBAS in June and I know I can do better, although the stick and rudder control section were challenging for me due t…

Aside from the obvious things such as a solid AFOQT/PCSM score, being a good dude, interviewing well, and flying hours, I was wondering if holding a particular AFSC would help you get selected at an ANG or Reserve unit. I'd be applying to fighter squadrons, and I'd imagine it would matter to them more than it would a heavy unit. I'm a JTAC (1C4) that's been to SERE water survival and all that good stuff. Just curious, still gonna knock the other stuff outta the park to be competitive. Thanks!

Hello all, Long time lurker; first time poster-- Open to any feedback, recommendations, critiques, etc... Becoming a fighter pilot, and officer, for the United States Armed Forces has been a lifelong goal for me. However, lack of citizenship and money made it difficult for me to afford any type of flight training throughout high school, and left me short on the prospects of doing college and any sort of ROTC back in 2010. As a result, I opted to earn my citizenship by enlisting as Active Duty Navy, and trying to earn a commission through one of the handful of Enlisted-to-O programs. I went in as an Aviation Machinist Mate, and managed to get stationed wit…

Good day all, I am a prior enlisted Navy veteran looking to fly fixed wing of some kind, branch isn't as important to me as flying on AD. I was an aviation electronics technician for four years before getting out honorably with a favorable RE code. I have knocked out my bachelor's degree and will be graduating this December with my masters, GPAs were 3.73 and 3.77 respectively. No prior flying experience. I initially was interested in flying for the Navy since that would feel the most familiar to me and went so far as to start the commissioning process, but two weeks in, my recruiter contacted me about an email he'd received from upstairs that the Navy has met i…

Hey guys and gals. I’m a prior service army dude looking to convince someone in the Air Force Guard or Reserves to pick me up and send me to UPT. Big preference on fighters, however, I’d be happy flying a cardboard box so I’m open to heavy’s or anything else except UAS. I’ve had my fair share of deployments so if I could return to war in something designed to fight, I’d be pretty stoked. So to keep it as brief as possible, here’s a quick synopsis of my current qualifications: PCSM – 98 AFOQT – Pilot 99 / Nav 97 / Acad 66 / Verbal 76 / Quant 52 Flight Experience – I have over 3500 hours in 23 different aircraft that include anything from military helicopters to…

I am currently putting an application together for Portland, New Orleans, and Vermont (and any other ANG fighter units that come up over the next several months). I just got my scores back from AFOQT and TBAS: AFOQT: Pilot: 94 Nav: 97 Acad Aptitude: 99 Verbal: 99 Quantitative: 99 PCSM: 63, based on 10 flight hours I will have over 20 when I actually apply bringing my score to 71, with a max of 91 with 201+. I also wanted to get advice on letters of recommendation, as I don't have many contacts within the military. Would it be better to get a letter from someone I don't know as well who is in the military or someon…

Howdy, I am currently attending a state university and have been planning on flying fighters for as long as I can remember. I am a young 20 years old and pushed through college in 3 years (May '19). Here's my current stats: AFOQT: 94 Pilot 75 Nav PCSM: 98 Major: Aviation Science w/ Flight Training Concentration GPA: 3.51 205 Hours with commercial multi w/ instrument I have met with several officers in the ANG including the wing commander. They told me now is the time to apply! The unit I am applying to currently flies F-15s, and are supposedly getting either a newer version of the F-15 or F-35s within a few years. Either way, th…

My AFOQT scores are as follows: 84 Pilot, 85 Nav, 67 Acad Apt, 62 Verbal, 67 Quant I don't have a PCSM score yet, but I also have no flight hours. I will be taking the TBAS beginning of June, and I hear without flight hours, the best you can do on a PCSM score is 70. So other things being constant, and considering my pilot score, if I ace the TBAS, the best I could feasibly do is about a 64 PCSM, give or take. GPA: Currently 3.38, but I'm projecting close to a 3.5 by graduation in end of August, with a B.A.A.S. in Technical Management I am 34 years old, I'm also an enlisted E-5, have close to 6 years active, and another 5 reserve/guard, been an F-16 A…

It’s a long story, but basically during UPT I decided to switch tracks from fighter to heavy. My original fighter unit is the one that gave me the slot. I went on to fly for a heavy unit. I’m starting to miss that fighter unit that I originally got hired by a few years ago. Would I be crazy to try and apply for a rated board with them?

I'm 23yrs old, just got my Aerospace Engr degree with 3.28GPA. P:97 N:82 AA:70 V:44 Q:88 / PCSM 90 with 81hrs, 97 with 201hrs I know my verbal is weak, English is not my first language but I'm pretty fluent so don't feel that's an excuse (thoughts?). I have leadership experience as team lead of senior project, and on Formula SAE team. I've worked with civilian test pilots as an intern and recently started volunteering to help a mechanic fix GA aircraft. I'm still currently searching for a real fulltime job to give me more leadership experience, so work in progress. I want to go reserve/guard fighters, but I'm willing to apply to AD board. I know th…

Hello, as you may be able to tell, this is my first post. Before I ruffle any feathers by my sheer ignorance, I just wanted to say that the past 5 years I have struggled to make headway with any moves towards a career in aviation and military due to not being a U.S. Citizen (from UK), as well as lacking the funds. Since my circumstances have changed, I hope to put in 100% over the next year or so to be competitive for an ANG/AFRES slot. I am sorry for not posting test scores because I only just became a citizen! I just wanted to have preliminary confirmation/denial that I am 1. Young enough, 2. Have enough education/experience, 3. The right attitude, - as a first step. …

Sorry to start a new thread but I didn't see, a thread in which i could post my question, without hi-jacking the purpose of another person's thread! My question, is more advice since I have no family members in the aviation feild/ We're a family of Medical Pro's! I'd like to know your opininon's on being a AD pilot, more or less, heavy's but really on just being an Officer, and the lifestyle or quality of life! I'm also since I have about 20G's in savings considering finishing up my PPL and IRA then going to an Ab-intio program called Mesa Airlines Pilot Development Progra…

Going for FY19 AD UFT boards. (New due date 26 October 18) I obtained my ppl before starting my degree, took TBAS about 2 years after. Graduated after 4 years and commissioned into active. Wondering if it's worth the risk to try the TBAS again after 1 year on active to strengthen my package. Don't think it's worth it to try the AFOQT again especially since I haven't flown in quite some time. My scores are below, would love to hear your thoughts! AFOQT Pilot: 78 PCSM: 68 (72 with +1 flt hr) w/ PPL Previous years' aggregate data: https://www.flyingsquadron.com/forums/uploads/monthly_2018_04/IMG_3562.JPG.27 Not sure why ppl scores are so low com…

Hey y'all, coming up on about 9 months of apps and interviews. Three interviews so far, no takers, one alternate. Just wondering from those in the know, if I should retake the AFOQT. Here's the breakdown. Looking for fighters. P92 / N83 / AA74 / V88 / Q56 PCSM: 93 210 hours, soon to be CFI. Working to improve my overall app and interviewing skills, but I'm on the fence about retaking the AFOQT. Any insight appreciated.

Hi folks, I'm currently starting my final year of college also seriously considering retaking my AFOQT to try and improve my PCSM. AS of the moment, I am planning on commissioning FY18, but that may all change. Hear me out. I'm not really one to be tact so I'll just say this the best that I know how. At the moment, I have an RPA slot and as glamorous as the future of this career looks, it's not something I think I want for myself. That whole idea of flying in a box, disconnected from everything that has defined flying for the past century is something I am still not sure about. As of right now, my PCSM is at a 59. I've taken the TBAS twice and AFOQT onc…
