  1. Started by sloatm,

Hi there, Rated assignments just dropped and I was hoping for a pilot slot however I was picked up for an RPA slot. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about getting moved up into a pilot slot or what the next steps could be to move into the pilot career field. I really wanted a pilot slot so this news sucks however I will not give up. Thanks for any information anyone may have.

  2. Hey everyone, Planning to apply at A KC-10 , C-17 OR C5 Flying squadrons. Currently enlisted reserve aircraft maintenance on the KC-10. I have a few questions to hopefully help me out in the next 12 months. Here's what I have got , 40 hours of flight instruction and all requirements met for private pilot (simply need to execute the check ride) 22 years old (23 at the end of the year) Current student with expected A.S. 3. Hello, I have started this thread in an attempt to get in touch with any AF member either enlisted, pilot, recruiter, or any officer that would be willing to discuss with me my background and my chances of being offered a UPT slot. I will not sugar coat my past and will present a comprehensive background of myself, including the strong parts of my application. I don't think it would be smart to post this all on a public forum so I would prefer to communicate through PM. Since I do not know which members I should PM, I would ask that anyone willing to listen and offer their opinion please send me a PM and I will respond asap. Thank you very much. -Arrow

So, long story short after 3 years ROTC didn't work out for me, so at this point my options are to enlist now or pursue a commission through OTS or the ANG/Reserves. I only have 2 years left before I finish my degree, which means I can start applying to OTS late next year. I realize its probably the most competitive route and currently there are no pilot slots for FY14/15. I'm 22 years old so I know time isn't an issue yet. My question is, should I enlist and finish my degree on AD, or should I just finish my degree now and start applying to OTS? I'm not 100% excited about enlisting to be honest (I've spent the last 8 years pursuing officer programs) but I will do it …

Morning Everyone, I am in need of some insight on my situation and I was told by numerous UPT students that this was the place to ask. I turned 24 this year in July, Married with 2 boys (2.5years old and 11 months old) and started college this year in May and I will have only 13 college credit hours at the end of this year. If I stay on track I can graduate with my bachelor's by the time I am 28-29. I am also currently acquiring my licenses, so I can fly as career no matter which path I take. I want to fly in the ANG/ Reserve with no previous military experience. My question is, am I too late to chase this dream? I spoke to a recruiter briefly on the phone…

  6. Hi, I plan to major in aviation because it is a really easy degree where I know I would be able to get a high gpa with. I plan to enlist in the Air National Guard throughout college and major in aviation with a high gpa. Also, i plan to learn spanish and have my instrument rating and private pilot license by time I graduate college. Would an ANG fighter unit choose someone who majored in aerospace engineering and has the same gpa as mine? Would they rather choose another person with a different degree? Is there certain college degrees they desire which can be a plus on your application? Would you reccomend me getting a degree in aviation or something else a fighter wing w…

  7. Started by sloatm,

Thanks for anyone's help before I explain below. I am an AS400 In ROTC that got picked up for RPA instead of pilot. I was talking to someone and they told me that their is the possibility of getting picked up for an ANG pilot slot or reserve slot and commissioning into the guard instead of active duty. I've looked into the process for applying to guard units and understand that it requires a lot of work and also a lot of heartbreak but there is still perhaps a chance. I have also heard that getting a cso slot into the guard is a little easier than getting a pilot and might better help chances of getting a pilot slot later on. So essentially I have two questions. 1. …

  8. Started by izzlenizzle,

About a year ago I enlisted into the ANG with the prospect of eventually becoming a flying officer. To make a long story short, it took over 8 months to schedule me for BMT (I planned to leave before a 3 month span, as my recruiter almost assured to me) In addition, I had a BMT date scheduled but no tech school date (apparently they were all booked up for my chosen field) I felt like waiting was only delaying my goals so I decided to pursue a discharge from the delayed entry program. My questions are the following: Can I still become a flying officer? Did I make it even more difficult to obtain a UPT slot? How will a hiring board view this discharge? Would I…

  9. Hi folks, I know this might seem like a rather bold question, but I have searched quite a bit and haven't found the exact answers I am looking for. I thought this would be the place to ask before I start contacting units. I have seen on unit applications that there is an education exception to policy for applicants who do not have Bachelor's degrees but are "exceptionally qualified." The requirements were based on hours completed and GPA with the caveat of finishing a Bachelors within 4 years of commission. So here is where I am at currently, and why I see this as an opportunity. Personal Details: -2 Associates Applied Science in Aviation Maintenance. 4.0 GPA Board …

This is my first post here. I am currently in an Army Unit as an ANG enlisted guy. I'm no longer at a Wing, so I have limited resources available to talk to not only AF guys, but also Pilots. I am bound in a 3 year tour with this unit (2 left), but I want to get on the power curve early to make any changes to make myself more marketable. The following are my stats. Current stats- Age: 23 AFOQT: 98 Pilot, 70 Nav, Mid 80s everything else PCSM: 78 Flight Hours: 14 Degree: A.A.S. in Emergency Management (Graduate in May with a B.A. in Emergency Management) Misc: ALS, NCOA, Eagle Scout, SSgt By the time 1st AGR tour is done (**denotes 50/50 chance)- Age: 25 a…

  11. How do they look at your college GPA when it comes to making a selection. Do they simply look at your overall GPA and that's it or do they analyze each individual class when they receive your transcript? Right now my GPA is only 2.87 mostly do to the fact in my Gen Ed classes I have gotten straight B's and two C's (In Music and Public Speaking). Would they see these grades and would it effect them> However, I think I can pull my GPA up when I take only my Business classes (I'm a business Admin major) because in my first two business classes I got pretty high A's. I have only two gen ed classes left. So If I do well in all of my business courses and my GPA is 3.5 or bet…

  12. I got a pilot score 71 on the AFOQT mainly due to my low scores on the math portion of the test. All the actual flying and orientation stuff I knew and it came easily. After taking the TBAS, my PCSM score is only a 65 with 82 hours of flying time. If I get it up to 101 hours my score will come up to a 69. I'm trying to get a reserve slot flying C-17s,130s ect but will take anything provided its not a drone! My instructor is a ex. KC-135 pilot and says I'm an excellent pilot. In college I did ok, I have a degree in Business Management with a 3.1 GPA overall and a 3.9 in my major(math scores killed my overall) So what are my chances of getting a slot? Thanks, David

Hello, I'd like to get some perspective from you guys, I'll list what I got while still trying to maintain my anonymity. My current approach isn't working so I'm turning to the internet for some constructive criticism, i'm sure there's no shortage here. Age: 24 I'm currently enlisted in the guard (E-4) I have my PPL with only about 69 hours GPA 3.3 in History PCSM 75 (would be 87 with 201+ hrs if anybody cares) AFOQT 90/80/40/60/30 (or something like that) I got a couple decent LOR's one from my commander and one from my flight instructor volunteer fire fighter In college I was on a few club teams and I tutored history. I know I need to re-take those…

Gents, I've been toying around with the option of not staying in the Marine Corps once my initial commitment has been completed. This is due to a multitude of factors: 1/1 deployment to home ratios, aging airframes and declining flight hours, etc... That being said, each and every time I come back from a DCA, AI, or BFM flight I swear I'd sell my soul to keep doing it. I'm curious about the ANG and Reserve options, and I've done a fair amount of research, but I still feel relatively in the dark when it comes to the Air Force as a whole. Would a first tour, 4-ship Hornet flight lead be competitive in potentially getting selected for an ANG or Reserve Fighter unit?…

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has seen guys come off AD and get UPT slots. Always thought about flying but wanted to do other things on AD. Don't regret it, but now that I'm ready to come off I want to explore the possibility of going rated. O-3, 4 years in, 3 years ADSC left, so would need to palace chase (I'm 26 now). PPL with about 90hrs, but no time last 5 years. only really interested in working/living in one state (AZ), but willing to fly anything. Also, anyone know how life works when you're a reserve/guard flyer? I understand UPT is full time but after you get to the unit, do things work like they do with other jobs, Appreciate it.

At a critical age, 25 and want to go balls to the wall but also be strategic as well with getting a slot. I am wondering if I should enlist in a guard unit or try my chances with AFRC which I heard the odds are really good getting a slot. I think OTS is out of the question with these scores. Afoqt scores, taken twice but got the okay for a 3rd attempt after 150days (Form T waiver) Pilot :83 Nav: 36 Acad: 34 Verb:47 Quant :26 B.A. 3.59 GPA PCSM is 75 with 72 flight hours, but will max to 87 at 201 flight hours.

  17. Good morning! I've got a 17D (Cyber) AFSC which I was pulled into instead of pilot because "the AF needs cyber, not another pilot." When I applied in 2012, I had all the numbers according to my CC, but any and all electrical engineers were barred from admittance. So I'm trying again, but I'm fairly unsure of my chances given the AF's perceived need for cyber. I'm in the 2013 year group, which is not critically manned for cyber (go figure) and have been told pilot is critically manned. My other stats are as follows: AFOQT: 82 PCSM: 55 Undergrad GPA: 2.9 Awards: 2014 CGO of quarter (SQ, Group, CHQ levels), 2015 CGO of quarter (Sq, Group level), #2/5 Lts (Sq), #2/16 Lts (Gp)…

Figured I would star this thread to consolidate some of the chatter about the Active Duty UFT board. On the discussion of PPL/PCSM... A bud of mine called AFPC and spoke to a Maj in the Rated Assignments Branch. He said on last year's board, they were cutting off Pilot selects with PCSMs in the 80s. So it sounds like there's enough applicants with PCSMs over 80 each year to pretty much use that as a rough cut line. Is it even worth applying Pilot only with a PCSM in the 60s?

Well guys, I took the AFOQT for the second time and here are the results: Pilot 57, Navigator 49, Acad Aptitude 35, Verbal 64, Quantitative 16. PCSM 58. In other words, they suck. I still can take the TBAS one more time. My worry is going up against guys with scores in the 90s. Depending on how much weight the unit puts into the scores, I doubt I'll even get an interview. What say you guys? Quick recap of life experience: Undergrad in Justice Studies with a 3.8 GPA, Masters in Justice Administration with a 3.9 GPA, Operations Manager for an online Firearms company for the past 6 years, PPL with a bit over 100hrs, fly right seat in company aircraft, volunteer work with the…

Hello all. I just got back my AFOQT results, and I'm pretty proud. Pilot: 99 Nav: 99 AA: 98 Verb: 97 Quant: 96 The catch is my college GPA was 2.6, but it is in engineering and from the #3 program in the nation. I'm also unemployed due to layoffs last year, but I spent 5 years managing up to 50 people at a time. I have my PPL, but I only have about 60 hours. The rest of my packet is 4 Letters of Rec: 1) Former Col. of the Base I'm applying who happened to be my PPL flight examiner 2) My CFI 3) My supervisor from my old job. 4) An Ex-Marine who worked w/ me at my old job as a consultant.
