Hey guys, so I’ve been keeping up to date on all my Air Guard news while sipping this delicious blue kool-aid they have in the waiting area at the medical clinic and I came across an article that said the AF had completed their re-winging project on the A-10. obviously, the money got sent to AD units first and I was wondering if Idaho got a piece of the pie? New wings would mean they're back in business and not being selected for the F35 is a none-issue. Will anyone in the squadron care to comment? I was curious how things we're going up there, I saw some locals through a fit about the noise. And some other news says another (albeit small) BRAC is coming …

I am at a crossroads with future. I will go into a little further detail about myself, but first I will give you my dilemma.... Manned Reserve Pilot or Active Duty RPA Pilot? Firstly I understand that both are great options and I am very thankful and appreciative for the position I am in. I have had little contact with AD RPA pilots and reserve pilots so I haven't had the opportunity to gauge where I fit in best. So about me. I am in the AFROTC program, currently a senior with an RPA slot. I have passed my flight physical and that is all taken care of. I am not a military brat, so I have had limited interaction with what active duty is like. I have been lurking on this …

If any Guard Navigators have gone through IFS, would you describe how the program differs for you as compared: - to pilot candidates; - to active duty Navs (if at all)

I'll be heading to IFT in a few months out in Pueblo, CO. I have heard more than one person refer to it as "DOSSchwitz." I have been told that when it was first started it was very rigorous and was a huge "weed out" program, but I've heard others say that this is not true and in more recent years the attitude there has changed slightly and their washout rate has decreased significantly. Has anyone gotten through the training in the last year-ish? How did you feel it prepared you at UPT compared to your classmates who did not attend IFT? Whats the lifestyle like there? 10-12hour academics mon-fri, then eat/workout/study in the evening? Is that it? Or is there oth…

I have been an IMA for almost 5 years and would like to get back into flying in a ANG/ AFRES unit. I was a C-130 navigator and then transitioned to an Army Aviator as a warrant officer to fly helicopters. I discovered that the Army life, QOL, and 1 year deployments weren't for me. Got 're-commissioned' into an AFRES IMA staff job and got the itch to fly again. BTW, I go for my O-5 board soon. Any suggestions?

I'm currently an IMA Major in the Air Force Reserve. It's been great being a staff dude for the last 4 years, but it's time to start flying again. I can't fly a desk anymore. I was a C-130 Navigator and prior Army helicopter pilot. Since I was rated, I thought there was no restrictions on age and rank to fly (helicopters). I was told by a HH-60 unit that my rank and age make it difficult for me to be a pilot. BTW, I will be having my first look at LtCol next year. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I think I've reached the end... or close to it. I'm beginning to explore IMA spots. Anybody have info with this? I'm currently a tanker reservist. Thanks!

Anybody know anything about PV promotions in the reserve. Looking at stats it's <20% to O-5 for IMAs (lower than the other line categories). What's the gouge on how to be competitive? I mean, besides PME. Does a guy with lots extended AD have a better shot than a part-timer? Do higher-level positions have better luck than lower (HAF vs Wg for example)? Just curious. Lot's of sites have the regulatory info, but I can find any analysis. As an IMA it's not like I have a unit to go ask either. Thanks in advance.

Looking for advice/comments on a couple different Reserve routes. I have a traditional Nav job lined up. However I still don't have my "real" job locked down. One option is about a 3 hour drive to the unit, so very doable. All of the other options are a cross country commute (no direct flights either). Obviously the nearby job makes sense for the Reserve job, but it may be that one of the cross country jobs is too good to pass up. The other option I may have is several IMA opportunities within a couple hours of where I'd work (possibly in the same local area for some of the jobs I'm looking at). Besides the obvious difference in flying versus non-flying, what are some …

The Air Guard, MAFFS, and Herk communities (and world) lost three great heroes on Jan 23, 2020. Captain Ian McBeth (Lt Col, MT ANG), First Officer Paul Hudson ((Lt Col (Ret) Marine Corps)), and Flight Engineer Rick DeMorgan, Jr. (18 year USAF FE vet) perished while fighting the fires in Australia. Personally, I was a Navigator in the Montana ANG with Ian for three years and I can't think of any pilot who I'd rather go into combat with. Please, do not speculate on this thread as to the cause of the crash. I just want this thread to be a memorial for those who knew any of these three aviators. We will find out about the details of the crash in due time. …

So, the shortage seems to be here. Our unit just got tagged for a bunch of CENTCOM lines and only about 50% of our people are volunteering. It doesn't help that AD pulled all of our MPA and Alert leaving us with nothing to feed our bums on a regular basis. There are quite a few "F*ck the AD, make them mobilize me." protesters, along with newly hired airline dudes (congrats y'all!). Squadron leadership is now mulling individual mobilizations. My question is this. What are the legalities of mobilizing a guardsman? I thought they needed the Governor or the Congress to approve this. They are making it sound like the Wing/CC can do it. Where would you find the reg…

I am heading down to TFOT and TFIT at Maxwell in January and I am a non prior UPT ANG select. My unit will only issue me ABU's and most of the Blue's but not the Blue's Coat, Pants Shoes and some of the other essential accoutrement and non of the Mess Dress that is included on the reporting instructions. Finance just informed me that I don't get the 400$ for officers to buy clothing because I am not an officer... I can probably get that later but still a pain. Also stopping by the BX i am sure that all the stuff I need will cost way more then that. Any body have any recent experience with this stuff? Do I just eat and it and pay for the stuff? On a related not…

Ladies and Gents: They say insanity is "doing the same thing over again and expecting different results". There is a limit between insanity and determination here. I've applied to multiple units the past 2 year always ending in rejection. Had 1 interview at a fighter squadron last year. PCSM/AFOQT Pilot high 90s. Near 1000 hours flight time and CFI. Engineer undergrad and graduate degree with high GPA. Good job. Athletics in college and now. Age 30. Well- rounded. I ask for advice on my application post rejection and either it is no response or it is "we don't see anything wrong, but it was just really competitive this year". This isn't really c…

Hey gents, wondering if anyone knew where to start on this one. I’m deployed as a DO and got into a run around with an over-zealous HARM chick about needing an interfly agreement for me to put one of my ACs with another units crew to fly (AC of original crew was DNIF). If they are all CHOPPED (sp?) Title 10 assets and crew members, do I really need to go get interfly agreements from their home units??? That seems stupid. I’ve heard about this happening before but I can’t find the thread. Here is the generic situation: Unit A is my preferred unit (location, airframe, mission, etc.). I also like Unit B, but not as much as Unit A. Unit B has a board a few months before Unit A. IF I am fortunate enough to get the slot with B, how unethical is it to also try and get a slot with A? This would obviously occur before any training would begin. On one hand, I see this as a douchey thing to do. On the other, they should have alternates right? Also, should I be upfront about it?

After the hornets nest was stirred in the Bonus thread, I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread where we can track this threat. We've been hearing talk of non-vol 179/365's coming down to the ANG at my unit (C-17), but so far it's only been talk. With the Active Duty ranks decimated over the last 5 years, it only makes sense they'd come after us next. It's been discussed at length within the walls of my squadron, but if involuntary mobilizations start rolling out to Traditionals, there's going to be a mass exodus of guys who really don't feel like that monthly check from Uncle Sam in 25+ years is worth the QOL hit today. If you've seen this happen fir…

I just finished my 6 years in November and am now in my 2 years of IRR. My husband is at AMS and is graduating in May. Am I still allowed to wear my uniform for his graduation and first salute? He really wants me to, but I don't want to break any rules. I've googled a bit but haven't found anything definitive. Also (and maybe I should put this in the AMS thread) he emailed me to send him his mess dress for their dining out the last evening and if I would be attending. I'm assuming I need a formal dress for this, right? I asked for clarification on it but I doubt he'll get access to email any time soon. I haven't been to a dining out in ages and I was in uniform the l…

I am one year away from high school graduation and I am dead set on going to my local college which has an associates degree program in aviation. Reason being, if I don't get picked up by an ANG unit then I would already have my civilian ratings done and there to fall back on. Plus finances aren't an issue because my parents are completely willing to pay for it all, so I felt it was my best option. Though, it is only an associates degree program, so I would transfer to Utah Valley University to finish my degree online as many others from the program have. My question is, would getting an online degree hold me back from getting selected for an ANG pilot slot?

I may have the option to do a non-flying guard job part time (DSG) and a part-time flying reserve job and just wondering if anyone out there is doing both or if it’s an option. And if it’s an option are there any limfacs or issues with doing both. Thanks!

I'm 29 years old and want to become an ANG pilot, but my 1st class medical cert app has been under review for over 8 months now and I don'd know when I'll receive my cert. My AME, HIMS case manager, and neuropsychiatrist have all given me positive endorsements to begin flight training and I've been issued my student pilot certificate. Of course without the cert, I cannot solo and get my PPL but I've already begun ground school, simulator lessons, and some flight lessons. My hope is to qualify for my PPL with flight hours and written and have my cert by that point so I can solo. Worst case scenario if the cert isn't issued by that point, would I still be competitive for AN…

Bros, I am a 135 co wondering if there is any gouge out there for a planner role or some type of orders longer than a month to England, Germany… or anywhere really. With the rainbow gone, the Deid drying up, and LTMPA slots being inconsistent, I want to know what else is out there for tanker bums to take advantage of. I know if there’s anything out there… it’s probably for an IP, but will settle for an AC, with the final saying being “nobody wants a co”. Thanks in advance. Fellas, I am an interservice transfer from the Army, already a qualified H60 driver, post command, 3 tours, etc. I did not do well on my AFOQT, I thought I had studied to an appropriate level, quite frankly the math portion surprised me a little more than I was prepared for and I embarrassingly, I choked in the ambush and I scored a whopping 5 in quantitative. Scores: Pilot: 78 Nav: 62 ACAD AP: 25 Verbal: 64 Q: 5 I am pretty embarrassed to talk about this, but humility in failure is important and I have learned a very hard lesson these past few days. So I am going to set up a retest, and go forth and study my ass off and be ready to get aft…
