Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

What is the Squadron's mascot? A part of the 927th ARW, their patch labels them as the "Flying Jennies", but I'm not sure if that's what they go by.

  3. Story here. To me this reads like politicians trying to intimidate the appellate process... I remember reading about this case in the Stars and Stripes when the trial was happening and thinking the evidence sounded weak. I have a hard time imagining in the current environment that the NAF would overturn the conviction without good reason.

  6. Oklahomans, our state will be in good hands. Adam Pugh, a former ABM, is running for State Senate based on his illustrious career as an ABM. He's so awesome that he still refers to himself as "Captain" years after his gallant service. Check out his pics on his website. He is so proud of his fake (ABM) wings, that he still wears them on his suit jacket. Also... he must have stolen someone's helmet for that glamour shot. Or maybe he kept his when he washed out of UPT. https://www.pughforsenate.com

Since when did respecting the flag become offensive or a "political affiliation"? Another gut-punch to my faith in the future of this country... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So I'm looking into purchasing some acreage up in New Mexico. I found a company that is willing to work a raw land mortgage. Their standard mortgage for this is "5 year Balloon Note (fixed rate for 5 years, balloon payment due upon maturity) at 5.75% (approx. APR 6.434%) amortized for 15 or 20 years." I'm not very educated in this department. Can some explain this to me? Also "Maximum Loan to Value 70%, 30% down payment required". Does this mean if I get appraised for more than my purchase price I can take the difference from the down payment or is it still 30% regardless? For example land value is $100,000 and I purchase for $90,000. Will I still need $30,000 down…

Does anyone else have one not showing up on mypay? I have one for every year I've been in the AF other than 2015. I contacted two finance offices today and the only information I've been able to get is that "all tax documents are ready". No one can explain why there isn't one. I don't know if it's a mistake or if it's all 0's, so the system didn't make one. I went on multiple TDYs, so I'd think there would be something on it. Could it be for only DITY moves? I think 2015 might be the only year I haven't PCS'd.

A group of roomates want to split a house purchase at a new location. 2-3 captains can get approved for a $1 mil+ mortgage (7 bedroom mansion). Rent out a couple rooms, and you're more than breaking even in equity once the house is sold in 5 years or so. Anyone do this before? Good idea? Pitfalls?

I have a friend with a small but successful high tech company that builds computer hardware. They want to hire a former military person that has an engineering degree (obtained before or after their Service... doesn't matter). I think they are not pleased with their current prospects right out of college, and want someone mature that can deal with life. Where can employers go to advertise for such non-flying tech jobs? I'll pass on any suggestions. Thanks.

  20. For you retirees... Your thoughts on wearing the Mess Dress at formal events. I'll have 4-5 events in 2016 where this will matter. 1. Military graduation where graduates will wear their Service Dress: would you wear yours? 2. Formal dinner event where you will see a lot of tuxedos, but that will also have active duty military in mess dress. Which will you wear? I've become partial to the civilian tux recently (and will likely wear that), but am curious what the rest of you do. You're not a retiree? Then keep your opinions to yourself, junior, and get the hell off of my lawn.

Does anyone know if the military reimburses you for the cost of weight stations? The only place open this weekend on the approved list is $10.50 per weight. It's a little ridiculous.

https://www.afforums.com/index.php?threads/rex-the-engineer.15323/ This stuff is pure gold. Here's a sample: THE ADVENTURES OF REX THE WONDER ENGINEER: REX and the BREAKAWAY It's a bold, bright sunny day out on AR 8A-B. The KC-10 and crew are finishing up their 3rd hour of straight receiver AR, hurtling around the two short tracks like it's a ing NASCAR oval, with no passing allowed. Rex, the Wonder Engineer, is on his 7th local in two weeks, and his nineteenth hour of receiver AR this month. Leading this perverted race is a wore-out E model, with the pride of the Raggedy-Ass Militia as crew. Rex stirs slowly from a sound sleep as Joe, the infamou…
