How do you get both men and women to reach into their pockets to see a movie? The answer, at least for the moviemakers behind Black Swan, was simple: girl-on-girl action.

"Everyone was so worried about who was going to want to see this movie," the film's Golden Globe-nominated star Natalie Portman tells Entertainment Weekly. "I remember them being like, 'How do you get guys to a ballet movie? How do you get girls to a thriller?' And the answer is a lesbian scene. Everyone wants to see that."

In Darren Aronofsky's dark spin on the classic ballet Swan Lake – which is already garnering Oscar buzz – Portman, 29, shares a bed-rocking sex scene with a rival ballerina played by Mila Kunis, 27. The surprising hook-up was just one step in her on-screen transformation into the graceful but troubled Nina Sayers, a role she says quickly became life-consuming.

"There were some nights that I thought I literally was going to die," Portman says. "It was the first time I understood how you could get so wrapped up in a role that it could sort of take you down."

Everyone can agree on lesbo scenes. I didn't see true grit personally but have heard quite a few of my friends/family enjoyed it. 95% on rottentomatoes.com means it has to be at least pretty good.

I saw it a couple days ago. Before I say how it was, I'll say this: any movie that's a remake of a John Wayne film and doesn't have John Wayne in it is going to unequivocally pale in comparison. No actor, special effect, director, cast, or script will ever be able to replace the Duke. Yeah, I'm preaching to the choir.

True Grit was pretty damn good. I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm a big fan of the Coens and the Dude never disappoints, but I was afraid the film might drag; it didn't. The acting was stellar, the dialogue was awesome, and the writing was decidedly epic. The last variable I was concerned about, as I'm sure all of you were, was Matt Damon. Luckily, Fatty Matty played the role of a douche bag, so it was very fitting. All in all, I'd give it an 8.5/10. Definitely worth the watch.

Craniums up...I think there's a series of porn "How to Train Your Dragon" versions 1 though 69 DVDs out there, too. Not so kid friendly.

Just saw a documentary titled "Restrepo" about a unit that was fighting in Afghanistan. Wow. Probably one of the best war films I've ever seen. Some amazing footage and commentary.

The recent medal of honor recipient came from the operation that is documented in this film.

A must see. - even if you don't like documentaries. It's shot in a very cinematic way, even my wife couldn't stop watching.

Well, not exactly under the topic of "Latest," but I couldn't find a better place to post this:

I just finished watching The Battle of Algiers. It is a 1966 French film about the revolution and counterinsurgency in Algiers. As many of you know, the Battle of Algiers, along with the Malayan "Emergency," the Philippine War, Vietnam, and several others are commonly studied cases of counterinsurgency. This insurgency is also mentioned throughout several of the counterinsurgency books that were on the CSAF reading list, including Counterinsurgency Warfare and Beating Goliath.

About the movie - well, since it is a foreign "classic," that means that it is entirely played with English subtitles, and the acting, effects, and scenery are all pretty bad. But overall, I would say it was worth the 2-hour investment to get a brief introduction on this important conflict. I think it did a very good job or portraying both sides of the conflict. I must admit, at times I was "rooting" for the Muslims based on what the French were doing to them. At other times, I was totally empathizing with the French and what we are going through right now in the Middle East. Also, according to IMDB, this film was screened by the Pentagon and shown to certain officers as a case study in how not to conduct counterinsurgency warfare.

I was bored and watched Zombie Strippers on Netflix, and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting!

As a matter of fact, it was almost entertaining!

Watching Jenna Jameson decompose throughout the movie was interesting, as there are parts of that woman that will never rot (and some that are already rotting!)

Robert Englund (of Freddy Krueger fame) did pretty good in his role.

The entire movie was shot on a $1,000,000 budget in 18 days, and it shows; but for free it was worth it if you've got some time to kill. Plus, there are a few good lines in it...

This was my $5 gem of a find in the value bin at the Laughlin BX. Many a drunken night was spent laughing with the bros over that movie.

"The King's Speech" starring Colin Firth, Geoffery Rush, Helena Bonham-Carter

Very good flick.

About the second son of King George V starting in the 1920s. Dude was the forgotten son and stuttered. Given that their duties involved a lot of public speaking, that was an auto-fail which made it even worse. Could've been shunted out of the public eye except when George died, the heir was boinking Wallis Simpson, a married American woman already divorced once (and a man, baby, yeah! She was one dude-looking woman...). After becoming king, that guy was forced to abdicate by the government (Churchill played a major role in this as well) when he wanted to marry Simpson.

The line of succession brought forward stuttering guy as king who developed a friendship with speech therepist Geoffrey Rush.

No skin, no explosions, no cool gadgets. Some very good writing and performances.

YMMV.

The wife recently drug me to go see Black Swan. I would rank it somewhere between chick flick and 'WTF?!'. However, the intense lesbian scene involving Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis was worth it.

Don't bring it up on date night, but if the frau must..at least you have this to look forward to.

Just finished watching a PBS Frontline special called "Frontline: Behind Taliban Lines." As the name implies, it is a documentary taken behind Taliban lines from their perspective. A reporter was somehow able to tag along for a few weeks with a small group of Taliban who were attacking a road between Tajikstan and Kabul. It was very fascinating seeing their motivations, determination, tactics, communication, and so on. I highly recommend it to anyone who has 50 minutes to invest in better understanding our enemy. It is available on Netflix via DVD or streaming.

On a lighter note, just saw Tron Legacy in 3D and Imax this weekend. The movie wasn't bad at all, but the special effects/sound/etc. in 3D and on the huge Imax screen made it worth the $11 hands down. YMMV.

Saw a few good ones lately. The Fighter was excellent, highly recommend, especially if you have fond memories of '90s fashion. Also saw The King's Speech, which while not for everyone, was pretty good too. Good acting, surprisingly funny.

Just saw "The Rite" with Anthony Hopkins - definately a good movie! Hopkins should get a Oscar nomination for his performance in this movie.

This movie could've been so much better. The trailer made it look like a new kind of horror movie, but the execution made it a lame-duck. Same with Pandorum.
