Funny story that wasn't funny at the time. We were flying the mighty whistlin shithouse (AC-130H) out of Guam practicing for the Iran hostage rescue. Our live fire range was basically a big rock sticking up out of the water somewhere near Guam. We were shooting our regular 20mm HEI rounds down at 2500ft. Bomb dump says they have a "shitload" of tracers they need to get rid of and ask if we can shoot it. We said sure, link it up, a mixture of tracer and HEI. So we are over this rock at 2500ft and the pilot lets loose with the first burst of the tweak, immediately followed by "CEASE FIRE, CEASE FIRE!!!!. Tracers were ricocheting back toward the airplane, some of them went past us.

Extremely rare for a crew to screw this up in the sim. But, it is the sim so they are monitoring closely trying to be on their best game. We have seen similar before and unfortunately will probably see it again.

A good friend of mine went down there as an adviser when they got their Herks. The stories he came back with, wow! Talked to him after the crash and he said it was amazing it took this long.

It's really hard to talk about this and not seem like your bashing the crew. The FE did really well in training, DG if I remember right. The pilot was described as "gifted". We know the facts but there are a couple of things we'll never know. Where was the FE focused that he didn't see the power fluxes and if he did see it why didn't he say something. Why didn't they abort the takeoff, they had plenty of time. Why did the pilot think he needed to step on the left rudder, in a left turn, with #1 engine shut down. Every Sim, refresher or MQ, at some point has this exact scenario. And Iv'e been doing sims since 1983, either as a crewmember or instructor. Tonka, as Contract Instructors we still get pushback sometimes with SIBs. It took an email to HQ safety office one time to verify that we do in fact have safety privilege. It all depends on who is in the office at the time.

I used the word accuser because she is not a victim. I understand the commanders role in all this. The problem I see, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, is that when they brief the commander there is nobody on the accused side. The commander, or FSgt, should ask if there is any evidence of innocence but they usually don't. It's all one sided and those investigators lie their asses off. Not always , my son got accused of sexual assault last year. The accuser(civilian) has declined to participate in the trial. The Army is still going after him 150% . Court Martial scheduled. None of the witnesses corroborate her story which has several versions. DNA test excluded him, however several DNA examples were found in her, on her and around her. It sucks because he is a good troop. The Army took him out of the fight for what is obviously a false accusation. I know, it's Army, but the AF has done the same.
