  1. Pretty sure it was an EP-3, at least that's what Wikipedia said!
  2. "2". Blackjack Pershing didn't play around. We need more like him.
  3. While first assignment pred dudes with cold hands may not be ideal for the COIN role, having a fleet of AT-6's dedicated to ACE, exposing sensor operators to manned flying, and SF support would be extremely beneficial. Leave the COIN to the old heads but these things are cheap enough for a huge order. New UPT grads are a depreciating asset and need to keep up their flying currency (along with everyone else). What better way to use these aircraft, than throw a crew together and go support ground pounders on Joint exercises, teaching them how to integrate UAV's in the battle space? Seems like it would be a lot easier to fly a T-6 to Fort Bragg than tear down a GCS, truck it across the country, and set up everything on arrival. And what about the MORALE? This would be a huge boost to morale and motivation, as well as attract more volunteers to UAV's. Of course, leadership sentiment as of late appears to be, "if you have time for ACE, you have time for another orbit" so who knows.....
  4. Has anyone ever invested in the Savings Deposit Program? 10% interest is massive, compared to money markets which are around 1.5% now. http://www.dfas.mil/militarypay/woundedwarriorpay/savingsdepositprogramsdp.html http://www.dfas.mil/militarypay/woundedwarriorpay/SDPBrochure_Mar08.pdf
  5. 6th SOF truth: CleardHot cannot be mass produced
  6. Best 1st post ever CanUcope, new guys take note! Figures she's enlisted......
  7. Porkchop, put the helmet and g-suit back in the closet! Shack on the 10yr finance commitment line. Apollo, good points all around. The deal did change halfway through and I don't think anyone will fault you in the least bit for being a little upset. Matter of fact, the first UAV to drop to UPT was in early October (09-01) if I remember correctly, so everyone thus far who has gotten a UAS has seen the deal changed while they were in UPT. However, come next month there will be no excuse. The writing is on the wall and everyone who joins to be a pilot knows what it ahead. Good on you though for keeping a good attitude and coming to work ready to kick butt and take it to the Taliban. I'm sure the 18 year old Marine is extremely happy to have your armed overwatch capability and know about the ambush around the corner. It's tough for us all to accept, but he does not care about our childhood dreams to fly *insert airframe* , he cares about making it home to his family and you guys are doing your part to make that happen. Thank you. Integrity first.....hmmm, ya....about that? Have you seen our OPR process? What about the new PT test being done by the HAWC and not our bros? Jill Metzger? Let's not get started on some of our leadership and the drug deals that they try to pull down for themselves and their bros. We'd be here all day if I continued. BL- The current plan is not sustainable for UAVs. At least sweeten the deal and put GCS's in Hawaii, Travis, Charleston, or other desirable locations. Airspace is only a factor for launch and recovery to my knowledge. What about ACE with a bunch of T-6's? Worked in the 80's for SAC pilots who only sat alert and still works for U-2 and B-2 drivers? Too expensive? Authorize $500/mo to be used at the local aero club for instrument and other flying currencies. Let's hope this non rated thing pans out, but the JTAC on the ground needs a known quantity and this may or may not be the answer. However, incentivizing the career field will galvanize our ISR capability, as opposed to dudes counting down the days until their ADSC is up which will only diminish our ability to prosecute the war and leave the 18 y/o without the support he needs.
  8. The services at Elmo are outstanding: 1) Downhill ski area 2) Multiple ponds for canoeing and fishing 3) Horseback riding and stables 4) Aero club at AFB runway 5) Private float plane club on six mile lake just north of the field with 2000' gravel strip next to it. 6) Huge outdoor rec. shop (go figure) I'm pretty sure they have XC ski areas too and the golf course looked pretty nice. Coupled with the amazing hunting, fishing, and outdoor opportunities up there, Elmo seems like a great place to be stationed!
  9. Scoobs, things will change 69 more times before you go to UPT in 2020 so no use worrying about it now.
  10. The drive to Eglin from Gulf Breeze is a long one. Will take about an hour and that's not even counting the Hwy 98 traffic (coastal highway). If I were you, I'd live in Milton instead of pcola. You will be closer to Eglin (I-10 down to US-85 and you're there) and you will be ready for the 5am shows when you have them at Whiting. The instrument phase is no joke at Whiting and you will be double pumping, as the Navy likes to say, sims and flights until you finish. It was nice to be able to come home in between events and study and eat before heading back. But I def don't recommend Gulf Breeze, the quickest route to base is a $4 toll and the friends I had that lived there got annoyed at the commute and ended up moving to Milton. NE pcola isn't bad but why live in a place that is neither convenient for you or your wife? If you truly want to split the difference, live in Crestview (Crestucky) right off of I-10 but I still think you are better off in Milton, especially if you can find a place to rent on the blackwater river.
  11. Wouldn't be surprised if Doc had it changed...
  12. Effective 20 Oct 09. Great news since my civilian 3rd class expires at the end of this month and the CFI thing is something to look forward to down the road!
  13. No TRs on the outboards but the stretch model is getting them, as well as better brakes.
  14. Max T/O Weight: 1,386,000 # The jet at Oshkosh is being used to test weights greater than that and is configured with ballast throughout to control CG and test different flight characteristics. According to my friend, they have already broken the record for heaviest takeoff (over the Antonov 225), but it was not official since it was a test flight. Apparently Airbus is also working on a stretched version that would max out around 1.6M #! Also, something like 880 pax with high density seating.
  15. HAHA, I can't believe the 319th called themselves that......utterly hilarious!
  16. What those guys failed to point out was, the crew was trying to stop the jet quickly to showcase its short field capability. My friend is up there now and is a former UPT classmate of one of the pilots, Terry Lutz-a former USAF test pilot, and was told this by Terry himself. For the record, it was the frenchman, Claude Lelaie, who made the "firm" landing!
  17. Yes. This article talks about "loyal wingman" (as opposed to the not-so-loyal, human ones????) and how one manned aircraft could potentially lead a dozen or so unmanned attack vehicles to targets. Apparently this is already in the works. http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2009/07/drones-the-future.html
  18. Great story Toro! This is almost as good as Seinfeld's response to telemarketers that call during dinner.
  19. Do you still have a pic of the car after the wreck? BTW, if you go to full reply you can attach a file through the server without going to photobucket, if that's easier for ya.
  20. What kind of plane do you own Nineline?
  21. Fair enough, I must of mis-heard. I was a little shocked that there was a waiting list to go though.
  22. Since this is the Kadena thread....... Apparently they are currently full up on co-pilots and the new co's are being told to only expect about 20hr/month of flying in the KC-135. Not to mention there is something like an 8 month waiting list for guys who want to deploy. Something to consider, that nobody talks about in UPT. Kadena is a great location but there is only 1 tanker squadron and they don't deploy. What do the other tanker guys get? I've heard about 700hrs/yr at McConnell or Fairchild with AC upgrade at the 1.5-2 yr point.
  23. Ya but if we're talking about the most recent one, I bet the STRIKE didn't help his cause one bit. Solid guy and hard worker. Single item bust on his checkride (7U) which started this mess since he already burned his 88 on trans. If there isn't a little nervousness on an 89 ride, something is wrong.
  24. Ya dude, that was creepy. She reminded me of the southern belle, alien chick on The Faculty.
