Great points--I think one would have to want to willfully undo the US/UK relationship in order to truly put it in jeopardy as there are just too many wheels turning for stuff like this to cause a problem. Even so, the author isn't terribly off base here, as much as they may just be trying to drum up a story. I can think of several instances where one government got pissed when a senior official from another government used poor word choice or was quoted out of context. These are just the things you have to deal with when everything you say is on record.

Would you prefer the equally arbitrary coin flip that is the last-resort tiebreaker in the NFL? IMHO this is why I prefer college football to the NFL. Each game is meaningful--I have a hard time giving a crap about a Colts/Pats game in October when both are going to make the playoffs and not really decide things until 2 months later. And as much as I also would prefer a playoff system I also think it will be mired in just as much controversy. There's always going to be someone who will be on the outside looking in (i.e. a 1-loss Boise St wouldn't get an at-large bid over a 1-loss team from a major conference, or they're not going to let the MAC or Sun Belt champ qualify for the playoffs).
