There’s a million different qualities, both tangible and intangible. Sometimes you only get an half hour to decide if a person posses those traits we’re looking for. Us guard guys are pretty good at picking out the person who is going to be a good fit for the long haul though. Just remember if you don’t get T-38’s on track select night, don’t pout and bitch. Go be the best you can in something else. Everyone “saw themselves in a fighter” at some point. And there’s been a million dudes who thought they wanted fighters, only to end up loving what they got instead.

I find this difficult to believe. Also, @JimNtexas did you a big favor when he asked you that question. It will be asked of you again, in some form, should you get an interview, and I’d recommend you start working on your answer, because here’s your issue…We don’t give a shit where you see yourself. You are hoping that those interviewing you see you in a fighter. See the difference? How much longer do you have on your ADSC? Are you applying to the AD UPT board as well?

Interesting indeed. I’m not surprised by those poll numbers. Now, I know this realignment is entirely about the almighty $ that comes with TV network sponsorships. However, I can’t help but think that the stupid way D1 football crowned its national champion for the past 100 years had something to do with this as well. Had there been a playoff similar to the FCS all these years, then perhaps school presidents, boosters, etc. may have been a bit less antsy to jump into a “super conference” if the season’s champion was decided on the football field instead of by a beauty pageant at the end of the year. Im not naive enough to believe this was the only issue facing FBS schools, but next year we get a 12 team playoff and we’ll likely be down to 3 “power” conferences by then, thereby completely cheapening the magnitude of being “conference champion”. I know there were many wrinkles that needed straightening, but certainly could’ve been. And had the opportunity been available to all conference champions, the powers that be, might have been more comfortable with the status quo.

Agreed. Just another example of ruining something great. FCS and the smaller conferences will still be reminiscent of the good ol days, I hope.

Well, that was a quite a day yesterday huh? I’ll tell you what, they need to give that Big12 commissioner a raise, that savvy son of a bitch lost OU and UT, turns around and grabs UA, ASU, UU, and CU, pulling the plug on the PAC 12, not to mention the other teams already scheduled to join. Not saying it’s the best conference, but I think it’s gonna be the most fun to watch.

Holy shit, man! That’s a rock-n-roll way to get noticed!! I recommend you walk into the squadron and “shoot your stuff” all over there too. A dude willing to texture the walls himself is certainly going to be remembered. Anyway, your scores are great. You’re still young, and sometimes prior service can help in the decision process; it can also sometimes be a detriment. You could use some more flight time, but I’m going to give you the same advice I give everyone who asks: If you want to get hired at a guard unit, go get to know the pilots. We want to hire folks who will fit in and be a great addition to our close knit group. The more squadron pilots who know you and enjoy being around you, the better your chances of getting picked up. Secondly, if fighters are all you want, start there, if you don’t get picked up, maybe start applying to heavy units too. I can’t stress enough to you and all the Guard UPT hopefuls out there that there is no secret recipe to getting hired. Great scores, great transcripts, great people, they all start to run together. If you want folks to remember who you are come interview season, the absolute best opportunity you’re going to get is to get to know the pilots. Whether that means enlisting in the unit, getting invited to meet and greets, showing up at drills, email and call squadron leadership asking to come visit, kidnap their wife and hold her ransom - whatever. Look, I know it’s not easy and seems weird in today’s age, but that’s why flying in the guard kicks ass still.

You probably won’t even take your suit jacket off at an airline interview and there is no such thing as an inspection process. So if you have some tats on your forearms, you’ll be wearing the long sleeves the rest of your career, but that’s it. No problem. I suppose I can’t speak for all airlines. Appreciate your enthusiasm, but remember the other day when you asked me how to not be annoying? Well, I guess I overestimated you when I said “you know what annoying looks like.” It’s time for lesson one… Don’t be a poser and jump into a conversation, acting like you know what you’re talking about, and giving someone advice on something you know nothing about. In fact, you’re a lot further behind mocephus in this process, as you have not even taken the AFOQT or began college yet. Most importantly, you have absolutely no clue if he could “definitely get picked up by a fighter sq” or any squadron for that matter, or what a squadron will ask on an interview. There’s a whole lot more to getting selected for pilot than AFOQT scores. Also, on a personal note unless an applicant was a teacher’s aid or worked for them in some capacity, I give letters of recommendation from a college professor about the same level of credence as if from the guy taking my order at the Taco Bell drive thru. The folks answering these questions are dudes who have gone through the process, succeeded, and now have the experience to give aspiring pilots some advice. I realize that the internet is a cesspool of horseshit and people pretending to be experts, and yes these forums are full of threads where pilots think we’re lawyers, financial planners, and politicians. However, when it comes to AF pilot questions, it’s best if you left the answers to those who are. Let’s try to maintain a degree of validity here. Lesson two: Humility. Mocephus scored a 99 on his pilot, that’s as high as you can get. He knows it’s a good score. You should’ve answered his post by saying something like “Damn! Great pilot score. Do you have any pointers for me so that I can score that high too?” instead of acting like you’ve been sitting on hiring boards for years. You seem like a bright and eager kid, that’s good and I’m definitely not trying to crush your spirit here. I’m certain you’ve spent hours combing these threads and picking up whatever morsels of intel you can digest. However, don’t confuse regurgitating the words of others as personal experience. Make sense?

What enlisted career field are you in currently? Do you interact with the pilots at all? If so, wait for an opportunity when they’re not busy or in a rush, and respectfully introduce yourself. Tell them you’re hoping to apply as soon as you finish up college. Nothing cosmic, no secret formula. You already know what annoying looks like. Don’t follow anyone around like a lost puppy dog, don’t be obnoxious, and don’t act entitled. Be helpful, respectful, funny, and humble. Offer to help the Lt’s clean up the bar or help DD after a Sqdrn function. The fellas are going to remember you come interview time. I know it’s easier said than done, but don’t be nervous talking to the pilots. Remember we’re always looking for our next pilot and like hiring our own folks, so be the guy that you’d like to work with.

Ah, so the reserves don’t have a student flight or anything like that? The guard will enlist a kid and pay them for drills until they leave for school.
