Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

I am a freshman in college in the ROTC program. I was just wondering out of the ROTC or the Guard/Reserve, to get a pilot slot, are both equally competitive? I am just looking at other options that I may have to join and fly Military. I would not mind being an Officer in the Air Force. But the unknown of what I will be doing up until Big week is kinda getting to me. Could I have a more concrete answer as to what I would be doing if I applyed Guard/Reserve? I hear they would hire me, ots, UPT, and all this time the unit is checking up on me seeing how I am doing, and during UPT I know what I will get out to fly. That sounds appealing to me. I just dont know. What are your …

So I have ran about 20 searches and can't find answers to these. C-17 and C-5 Reserve units. I know in AD land, you do about 10 day trips and your biannual 4 month tour for C-17s. How about the reserves? What kind of trips and deployments do the reserve C-5 and C-17 squadrons go on? One more... if you are a part-timer out right out of FTU, what kind of seasoning can you expect from a C-17/C-5 unit? If you're part-time, can you get more trips? Can you afford to live on a part-time heavy reserve slot alone? Thanks for your help on this...

how does communting work in the guard/reserve units, for those that live a long distance away? all the units I'm applying to are a good 1000 miles plus from home. im talking about if you have to pay for it out of pocket, or if you are able to either get reimbursed/grab a trasport floight out of a nearby base.

  5. I’ve searched the threads, but can’t find quite what I’m looking for. My question is, what’s it like to live about nine hours or more from your unit? I got hired at a unit in one state, but have a great civilian career opportunity in another state. Also, the unit does allow out of state commuters. Serving the unit comes first and that’s the priority, but I’d like to have a loose idea of a “plan” for the coming civilian side of my life in the upcoming years after training. For those of you who have a far commute to the unit, or have knowledge of others who do, what’s it like? I’m talking about in the ways of weather, stress, work/life balance, finances. Is it not…

Quick question. I am currently a new LT in a unit that is being BRAC'd to close. I know that I need to look for another unit to pick me up pretty soon since my unit gave me the blessing to start scouting out other units. However, I have strongly considered joining AD. I really enjoy the unit that I am in and the mentality of the guard/reserves, however, being a bum is not what it used to be with all the furloughed guys. When I first got hired, I didn't want to get a full time civilian job for the first few years so that I could be a dedicated bum and learn the ropes of flying with my unit and be dedicated to my unit. And I feel that if I did get a full time civilian…

Hello, I feel ive searched this post pretty thoroughly but cant find an answer to my question. Does the ANG have a requirement that states you can have no more than 5 yrs of commissioned service( any branch) prior to going to UPT. I know AD and the reserves have such a rule refered to as TFSCD and it almost impossible to get a wiaver for . Thanks

Does anyone have a comment on the relative attitudes of the Reserve guys vs the Guard guys? I'm specifically talking about heavy units. I wondered if the Reserve guys were more locked on than the guard guys. Do they know how to have a good time? Thanks-

I just posted this in the UPT forum, so apologies for the double-post...hoping this may get some feedback. I followed the threads here for a while and finally have a question for the masses. Does anyone know of someone who washed out of UPT, moved on with their careers, and eventually was able to go back to UPT with either the Guard or Reserves?? Quick background: I failed out several years ago (airmanship, SA, etc) and since have moved on as a Nav in a strike platform. I now am an instructor/evaluator and coming up on the point where my commitment is over. Over the years I have gotten lots of civilian hours, multi-engine time, etc. I am curious if it is even…

I was just wondering if anybody got into a situation of being offered a slot before interviewing with your prefered unit. By prefered, I mean a unit with your ideal airframe, location, or maybe a home unit for prior-enlisted.

Folks - what's the general outlook on legacy Herk units in the Guard & Reserves? I'm exploring Palace Chase/Front options in the near-term and trying to gauge viability for 12Ms in anticipation of the FY16 Force Management Programs. I'll be sitting at 16 yrs active next summer and would need to crosstrain from 12B. PM or direct reply greatly appreciated. Cheers.

For about the past year, all I keep hearing back from units is that they are seeing record numbers of applications for their boards. I am starting to wonder if board applications overall are increasing, and also what affect that is having on odds. You can have great scores, great experience, and show up on drill weekends, but if there are consistently 150-200 applications each board the odds can still be rough. This may be anecdotal, but I started applying to fighter units approximately 3 years ago. The first year was great - I had a few interviews and got really good feedback from them. Then it all dried up, even though I increased the number of boards I applie…

Hey ya'll, Has anyone heard of or known anyone to go to graduate school while flying part time in the ANG (specifically a fighter unit and a technical degree). If so, did they get an assistantship or fellowship or financial aid for grad school? I'll be graduating in May with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and would like to pursue a degree in Biochemistry, but would also like to fly for the ANG. However, a Ph.D before UPT would probebly be out of the question due to the fact that I turn 24 that June after graduation. I am afraid that after UPT/RTU/Mission Qual and flying part time, it would be hard for me to get into a grad school due to having to miss t…

Does anyone know the how the full Palace Front process works? I got hired by a guard unit and spoke to the inservice guard recruiter that services my base. I filled out an AF 1288 and a Palace Front Questioner and returned it to them. The unit that hired me asked me for medical, dental, surf, shot records, etc... and they medically approved me and returned the back of the AF 1288 to my local inservice recruiter, who then turned the paperwork to the AFPC Palace Front office. The recruiter swears up and down that I don't need to do a thing on the VMPF with regards to separation, and told me that AFPC will contact separations at my current base once the AF 1288 is…

I've put together an updated list of all the UPT interview boards that are currently scheduled for 2017 (fighter units only), along with website links to the postings and phone numbers to call for more information. Obviously it is always changing so I plan on updating it every month. If you are interested, just respond to this post and I'll send you a link. Best of luck. Don't ever give up on the dream! GEKO

I know the cutoff is 30 but does anyone have any experience or knowledge of NGB and how strict or not they are about pushing an age waiver through? The problem would not be with the unit I’m just wondering about NGB approval. About me... Turning 29 in 2 weeks. Will have PRK done in a month so I understand I have a year out to wait for my flight physical. Will be 30 during AMS & IFT

Hello everyone, Currently I am a junior in college majoring in mechanical engineering with a few questions with regard to jobs outside of the guard. I have been searching through a lot of threads and haven't seen anything on the topic so I figured I'd ask. How hard is it to have a job that actually pays well outside of the guard? For instance, let's say I worked at Boeing or some other aerospace engineering company as an engineer... Does flying get in the way of actually being able to retain a job? My guess is it would depend on the company and what they are all about. And I know about the legal obligations companies have to keep your job while you get deployed, …

  21. Hi folks, I was planning on retiring in January, but with the current state of affairs, it seems that would be an ill advised move. However, I am in a pickle. I am an AFRES O3 with 19.5 years of service. (8 yrs enlisted) I was passed over for O4 last year because of a lack of recent award, as well as a referral OPR from 2015 for a failed FTF. The career development section in my wing failed to inform me of when the 2020 O4 board was being held, and I again failed to obtain a recent award. (totally my fault, I was very blinded by my upcoming retirement) Now I am afraid that I will be passed over again. My question is this: What are the repercussions for being pas…

Before I get someone’s guess at my base, I figured I would reach out to the bros on here. We have a Title-10 mission at my base and we get fed man days from AMC and TACC quarterly through the M4S system. Last year I had guys that were on orders the whole year (365 days+) and it got me thinking, if or how could I get them a pilot bonus. Has anyone had any experience getting a traditional pilot on full time title-10 orders eligible for the bonus? I figure this could potentially help retain some guys if I can figure out a way to put some extra $ in their pocket. Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app

Hey all, I'm wondering if there is any info on the 200th Airlift Squadron? I'm currently a tanker pilot out east, but I am interested in moving to Colorado with my family to settle down. I was a maintenance guy with the 140th Maintenance Squadron for 8 years, but left to pursue an aviation career. I have done a bit of reasearch on the internet machine, but can only find fact sheet type stuff on the 200th AS. If there is anyone who is a member of the 200th that could shed some light on hiring/lifestyle/ops tempo etc I would be very grateful! Cheers, Velo

ARC legacy 130 units are being required to send instructors for all crew positions to Afghanistan for a minimum of 6 months. Given the fact that most IPs in the ARC have fulfilled their pilot training commitment or can retire, what impact has this had on units that are dealing with this? After reviewing the merits of this deployment, one could easily call it a bad deal. Couple that with an optimistic airline employment outlook, you now have a potential readiness issue due to IPs retiring or leaving in larger than expected numbers. Any thoughts?
