Anyone have experience with transitioning airframes in their career with the guard/reserve? How long did you give a unit before you made the switch? How hard is it to go from fighter to heavy or heavy to fighter/bomber?

Sorry if this topic has already been discussed, I can't find a thread about it. If you go through a civilian AD hiring board, my understanding is you must go to OTS first before going to your MFS at WP. Obviously because of my age (I'm pushing 33), I am applying to this upcoming AD board. The deadline is Sep. 12. Are you able to secure your IFC1/MFS through AD and hypothetically keep rushing guard/reserve units and get hired by them? Or are you blood sealed to AD at that point?

Hi all, I'm looking for some detail on the "type" of orders that would come with the 3-4 years of pilot training + seasoning in a guard unit. I'm a guard off the street hire anticipating starting the OTS/UPT pipeline next year. I'm currently in the process of switching civilian jobs in the meantime, and am reviewing prospective opportunities. As one would expect, I'm looking at applicable military leave policies as well. The company I plan to sign on with provides paid military leave for employees that are "deployed for an active duty tour for a declared military action (to include Homeland Defense)." This is what leads to me to the above query, as all I kn…

I know there are old threads on the subject and I've read them. Most don't go into too much detail and simply say "Don't be an idiot" "don't be an @ss" "have a firm handshake." I'm an older applicant and I know time is not on my side. There are a few units I have rushed, non have had interviews yet but two have told me to turn in an app to keep it on file. One of the units, I have visited them three times. All three times, I just walk all around the squadron and try to make myself known by everyone. I shake hands, I talk to pilots and non-pilots alike, I try to bond over the military, aviation and even non-flying things like music, cars or literature. This unit, I even go…

Live in SoCal (prefer San Diego), TR/DSG or fresh off AD and ready for a change of pace? Better family/work balance (no deployments)? More flexibility (and less/little AF pay but full USERRA protections/mil leave)? Must be a Major or Lt Col with 3+ish years left. Interested in working with/mentoring motivated youths? Must be self motivated and able to work independently (it’s a beautiful thing once you get it). I attached an old handbook that might answer some questions, but DM or post them if you got them. I've seen different units advertise different maximums for TFCS--some say no more than 5 years and some say no more than 8 years. Does anyone know if there is one correct answer and what publication I could find it in? On a similar note, if anyone has ever successfully had a TFCS waiver approved, I would be grateful if someone could DM me the template. TIA

I know we’ve all read and heard that there are some instances where a guard/reserve fighter select that’s not doing too hot will swap with a heavy select during UPT. Just curious if anyone knows about how often that happens. I’ve heard washout rate for fighter selects is pretty high. Thanks in advance for any info!

Hey guys, I’m an H model Co trying to close out my hours for AC upgrade, I’m very interested in going on a deployment with another H model unit. It’s been challenging finding info on this stuff, and I’m sure everyone is “fat on co-pilots”, but with the H sunsetting I really feel like I have to hit this hard to get it done. If someone could send me even a state and a time-frame I can do the rest of the lifting from there. It’s a small community so if you reach out we probably even know each other haha Thanks

I retired back in 2014 but many of my Squadron mates are reaching age sixty or hitting the age sixty rollback and applying for their retirement and running into long delays getting their retirement pay (mine took six months). Apparently when the ARPC implemented a new FSS system back in January there was a massive data loss with over 60k people affected. Many veterans who were already long retired and collecting a check had to resubmit their retirement packages. As a result there is a huge backlog for ARPC to close out retirement applications. As you know once you turn in your CAC card you are effectively cut off from all your digital data and are at the wh…

Good evening gentlemen, I hope y'all had a good thanksgiving! 🙂 I have a question I was hoping to shoot y'all. I got back from BMT and tech school a month ago and have been loving AFE. ive met a couple of the pilots in the crossing and have started to get my face around and politely let them know that I would love to fly fighters for the squadron. I recently went up to the pilot room and met one of the hiring board pilots and he gave me some great advice of how I can make a good impression. he suggested I come up every drill after work and just talk to them, and if possible stay behind late to help clean up. I thought this was great advice and id love to hear more fr…

Current UPT student set to graduate T-6s in near future. With fighter drops out of T-38 becoming few and far between for AD guys/gals, I was curious what options/if any exist to get picked up by ANG/AFRC unit. I have seen prior postings for units listed as “UPT” and other for “Rated only.” I am curious if any ANG/AFRC units view a soon to be UPT grad as worth investment in speeding up the hiring timeline and could pseudo fill those “rated” slots because of the more aggressive timeline? Does such a thing exist? I still have a 10 year service commitment but not sure if that could be moved to service in the guard or reserves. Thanks in advance for any and all advice! …

https://www.twz.com/35401/check-out-this-incredibly-rare-image-of-an-f-22-pilot-wearing-a-helmet-mounted-display apparently, scorpion (the company making this helmet) stopped by the shop recently showcasing their new design that they're wanting us to use since we are the only guard f22 base. I must say, this is a sick ass helmet.

Hey everyone, Wanted to share something that recently happened and see if anyone here has insight or perspective on whether this kind of experience is common, or if I just caught a bad break. I applied to a squadron and was told I’m permanently disqualified. The reasons given were that I “called too much” and that I had a “bad attitude.” I’ll own the first part—I followed up more than most, but only because communication was practically nonexistent. No updates, no notifications, no visibility on where things stood. I thought I was being persistent and showing genuine interest, but maybe that didn’t land well. The second part—that I had a bad attitude—really…

So my guard gig is getting ready to expire due to a unit mission change. I've been hunting for a guard/reserve position close to where I'm living. I've traded emails with the DO of a range ops det, and he's interested in having some IMA support, but currently doesn't have any open positions. He mentioned that he's not really up to speed on getting reserve support. I'm going to get in touch with the IMA coordinator at ARPC (not sure if that's what the position is really called) for this region to see what's what. Have any of you heard of or personally had any success in facilitating the creation of a position, and subsequently filling it? I'm pretty ignorant of…

Has anyone's unit put out protocols for flying into Africa on an Air Force mission? I know there are protocols for preparation and execution; I am referring to post mission. 1. Informing your civilian employer. Is it only if you visit the Hot3 countries or all of West Africa/bordering countries? What if they ground you for 21 days, will the USAF pay you for 21days? 2. If you fly international for your Civilian carrier, and check "yes" on a countries immigration form to the "west Africa in past 30 days" question, are you putting yourself at risk for quarantine and trip removal? 3. If back in civilian status and develop symptoms, will the USAF pay your medical cost…

Philadelphia Is Looking for a Few Good Gentlemen Deployments Thin Ranks of Unit That Has Lured Blue Bloods Since 1774 By Michael M. Phillips Updated Oct. 15, 2014 6:31 p.m. ET PHILADELPHIA— Gregg Connell ’s enlistment into his National Guard cavalry unit went like this: Already well-lubricated at the armory bar, members of the troop passed around a wooden box. Those who wanted to accept Spc. Connell dropped in white marbles. Those opposed, black marbles. White marbles outnumbering black, Spc. Connell was summoned into the armory’s mess hall, where, beneath oil paintings of bewhiskered men in silver-buttoned tunics and helmets topped with bearskin cr…

Herk Operators, Since the baseops job board seems to have s- itself recently I'll post here. As of Oct 1st 2013, the 189th at LRAFB has been in charge of all C-130 Legacy FTU training in addition to the legacy instructor school. With this expansion we have had a restructuring of our manning document and have created many new DSG positions. Currently we have 11 DSG spots sitting empty. We are looking to hire C-130 IPs, but could entertain getting an AC some upgrade training if he/she we a good dude/dudette. While not guaranteed, most of these new hires could be looking at potential full time employment within a few years. This is also a good environment for an ai…

Does anybody on here have any contact info for rated hiring at the 452 AMW (March ARB) on either the KC-135 or C-17 side? I've tried calling their recruiter's office, but they didn't seem to have too much on the rated side of things. Thank you.
