Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. I'm an AD enlisted dude applying to various Guard/Reserve units and I understand the importance of face time with the respective squadrons. I've sent out a few applications and have rushed a couple units already and plan on more. I've always worn business casual while dropping-in during UTAs, but never really thought of it as a negative. In my head, ABUs are utility uniforms and don't look too sharp. Blues, on the other hand, seem over-the-top and, frankly, dorky for a drop-in. Still, for formal interviews/boards I would 100% wear service dress. My question is: Do you think wearing a nice business casual outfit, as opposed to a uniform, is hurting my chances?

Anyone have any info on what UCT is like and more specifically what being a CSO on the C-130 entails? I was recently eliminated from UPT (didn't pass formation in the T-6) but I am being recommended for CSO and considering finding a reserve unit to sponsor me. Are there reserve fighter units that higher back seaters? Any info would be helpful!

Hey everyone, I'm going to enlist in a fighter unit and wanted to know if there was such thing as a "best" job in regards to getting the most face time with the pilots. I've really only heard crew chief or avionics. Would it hurt someone if they enlisted and did the planning and scheduling? Want to make sure I'm getting the best job to increase my chances. Thank you!

Herk Operators, Since the baseops job board seems to have s- itself recently I'll post here. As of Oct 1st 2013, the 189th at LRAFB has been in charge of all C-130 Legacy FTU training in addition to the legacy instructor school. With this expansion we have had a restructuring of our manning document and have created many new DSG positions. Currently we have 11 DSG spots sitting empty. We are looking to hire C-130 IPs, but could entertain getting an AC some upgrade training if he/she we a good dude/dudette. While not guaranteed, most of these new hires could be looking at potential full time employment within a few years. This is also a good environment for an ai…

As the title suggest, is there best way to find available flying AGR positions? Just call the units? I read the discussion of ART positions switching to AGR positions so it seems like there "should" be more AGR spots available. Seeing as how I'm still learning Air Force-isms, I'm not for sure where exactly to look or who to talk to. 8 of my 13 years flying in the Navy has been working in the reserve world which makes me want to find an AGR spot to keep the reserve vibe going, just having a helluva time finding said AGR spots!

  8. Greetings all. We are in the process of converting to the C-130J. We have a few part time slots available for the right people if they are interested in making the move. Current loadmasters on any airframe are preferred but we can consider taking someone off the street as well. Applicants must live locally or are actively arranging to move to the metroplex. This is a fantastic area with endless civilian employment opportunities. Lockheed is across the runway, Southwest and American are headquartered here as well. This is a great unit with plenty of interesting trips/travel. Shoot me a PM if interested.

Does anyone work for a civilian company that offers compensation or benefits during their ANG duty? For example, the Feds (i.e. federal government) offers 100% of your pay for 15 days of AT each year, with the ability to roll over 15 days per year. Pretty legit...see here. Allows you to actually make serious money during AT vs possibly breaking even or even losing money depending on what your civilian job pays and your mil rank & TIS. I've heard from friends that big DoD contractors also offered paid mil leave time, Lockheed being the one named specifically. I'm sure there are others. BL: I'm trying to get a copy of a military leave policy from a civili…

  11. I am a current federal GS employee and will be going to OTS/UPT for the reserves. I plan on coming back to the govt job after transitioning to a part time reservist after seasoning. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips/tricks on maximizing the benefits while in training (i.e. how to clock/use Military leave, annual leave, and LWOP strategically your advantage)? Examples: Should you mix LWOP with annual leave? Use all banked annual leave at once so you earn more time off? Use a little annual leave every pay period so you're always in a pay status? Be in a pay status in pay periods with holidays? Etc? Hoping somone on here has previous experience with this …

AFRC is closing our squadron this year and the members are getting little help in finding a new TR job. I ran across this document on the AFRC website, anyone ever heard of this program? I asked my MPF about it and surprise......they knew nothing and offered little help. I might call the POC on page 3 (marked as page 1) but I first wanted to see if anyone had any experience with it? My guess is that just about anyone coded as "displaced" is eligible (just as this document states), but I have this idea in the back of my head that if you are aircrew you can forget about it, only good old fashion networking, interview, etc, will land you a new aircrew job. In my c…

  15. Many moons ago I posted on here asking for advice about juggling my small business while going through UPT. I got a variety of comments and direct messages ranging from "hire a manager" to "I can't see how it would work" to "a friend of a friend did something like that". I ended up hiring a manager to run the place while I was gone and gave up a big chunk of my salary to do it. But I trusted him, and with my wife's help running admin stuff from behind the scenes I was able to keep and actually grow my business. I just pinned on pilot wings a couple of days ago and wanted to come back here to thank everyone for the encouragement and advice. I also am back here to…

Due to numerous issues, it’s been over a year since my unit submitted the initial RPA to hire me as an ART. The most recent RPA submission was exactly a month ago and the announcement hasn’t shown on USAJOBS yet. Anybody have similar experiences? The wife and I are kind of freaking out, looking at returning to AD (life situation doesn’t support the airlines).

Hey guys, anyone on these boards familiar with the 115th FW out of Madison? I will be interviewing soon for a maintenance position. I have a background in machining, metal work, etc., hence why I am looking in that direction. Is the unit pretty cohesive? What is the atmosphere like? I have interviewed with a couple of heavy units and the shop and squadrons were very relaxed but this is my first and only non-heavy unit I'll be interviewing with. I'm both nervous and excited because I have no idea what to expect. The posts on fighter squadrons are plentiful on this board but the perspectives are so varied in comparison to the consensus on heavy squadrons. Thanks …

Hey All, I recently got hired by a heavy squadron and will he reporting to training in late 2021/early 2022 (estimated by unit). I currently have a civilian job, and have about 1100 hours I got through being a part-time CFI. Since I have to wait longer than I anticipated, I am probably going to try to get a regional job at PSA, Peidmont, or Envoy (hopefully hiring picks back up in the spring if not sooner). These airlines have a flow through program to American Airlines. Some (such as peidmont) flow through based only on time at the company and not FO or Captain time or other flying hour requirements. My unit told me that I can be gone up to 3-5 …

Has anyone's unit put out protocols for flying into Africa on an Air Force mission? I know there are protocols for preparation and execution; I am referring to post mission. 1. Informing your civilian employer. Is it only if you visit the Hot3 countries or all of West Africa/bordering countries? What if they ground you for 21 days, will the USAF pay you for 21days? 2. If you fly international for your Civilian carrier, and check "yes" on a countries immigration form to the "west Africa in past 30 days" question, are you putting yourself at risk for quarantine and trip removal? 3. If back in civilian status and develop symptoms, will the USAF pay your medical cost…

  24. "The service has also begun reviewing training for the AC-130J Ghostrider, the Air Force’s newest gunship. It’s trying to fast-track special operations flight school by sending students straight to AFSOC training units after they earn their wings on the T-6 Texan II. That cuts out the intermediate phase of flying the T-1 Jayhawk, which is heading into retirement after serving as the stepping stone to mobility and special operations aircraft. That decision can shorten pilot training time by six months, AFSOC spokesperson Lt. Col. Becky Heyse said. Around 30 airmen are expected to go straight from undergraduate pilot training to AFSOC to learn to fly the U-28…

I love the "make them tell you no" attitude, but would like some advice. I know I would require a waiver for vision due to depth perception (alternating esotropia, history of strabisumus surgery). The odds aren't good, but from what I can find a waiver is still possible. At what stage in the game do you bring this up? Seems like something you wouldn't want to magnify. Obviously honesty is the best policy, but is this something they expect you to bring up? Do they ask about possible medical issues during interviews? Curious if anyone had experiences where they knew they would need a waiver going in.
