Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by Bigred,

As the title suggest, is there best way to find available flying AGR positions? Just call the units? I read the discussion of ART positions switching to AGR positions so it seems like there "should" be more AGR spots available. Seeing as how I'm still learning Air Force-isms, I'm not for sure where exactly to look or who to talk to. 8 of my 13 years flying in the Navy has been working in the reserve world which makes me want to find an AGR spot to keep the reserve vibe going, just having a helluva time finding said AGR spots!

Hey guys, I’m a reservist pilot with a full time civilian job. I am finding it harder and harder to keep up with my currencies in the jet. Not to mention regular deployments and constant pay headaches. My heart is simply not into my job as a pilot anymore. I am nearing the point of dread every time I have to make the drive to the base. I have 2 years 5 months until retirement. I am looking for a seriously part time gig and even willing to go the points, no pay route if it means I can log points towards retirement, and not miss out on my civilian job and family events anymore. Does anyone have any good ideas on where to start? I have looked into the admissions l…

  3. So I am about a year out from gradutaing college with my Aeronautical bachelors degree. 3.6 GPA. I am looking to apply to my local ANG fighter unit. I have my commercial, Instrument, CFI, couple hundred hours of Civ flight time. What should I be doing now to get the ball rolling? I assume I should start getting ready to take the AFOQT and the TBAS? I've gathered a couple of LORs so far and not really sure where to go from here. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

As I learn more about the Air Force as I work my interservice transfer, I'm learning more about AGR. Doesn't seem like a bad deal, or at least more laid back than active. My three questions, 1) Is AGR available to someone directly from active duty that flies a different airframe? I.e., does the unit hire someone and then put them through advanced airframe training if they aren't already qualified, or do they tend to want someone already qualified? 2) For the AGR positions, do they tend to hire from within over finding someone outside of the unit? Or do they expect someone to affiliate as a regular guardsman and then pick up AGR orders? 3) If you cross …

  7. Started by Duck,

As I plan my next move, I came up with a question I am having a hard time getting an answer for. The guard unit I am considering joining is doing all deployments via Mob Letters, thus getting the Mob protection and whatnot. I will be a complete free agent with zero commitment to the unit. I plan on sticking around for a while, but I know eventually I am going to want to give up the job forever. Once you get put on a Mob Letter are you effectively blocked from separating/retiring until after the deployment? I had heard rumors AFRC was trying to make it harder to separate if you were tasked with a deployment but haven’t heard anything about the Guard. Thanks!

  8. Started by QMar92,

I recently separated from Active Duty AF to finish my degree, BS in Aviation Flight, with the intention to apply to AF Reserve/Air National Guard units and compete for a pilot slot. Up until this point I have only been exposed to transport/cargo/refueling aircraft and pilots. The lifestyle of these pilots is very appealing to me, 3-4 month deployments, they can rack up hours a lot easier then a fighter/attack/bomber pilot could, possibly gain more relevant experience for the airlines with the utilization of CRM and working with an aircrew and even possibly be flying a militarized version of an aircraft utilized by airlines, Example: C-40, DC-10. My question is…

Quick I need help! I just got an email back from a unit im trying to interview with and they said they want my FAA flight physical form however I'm in the army and all I have is a DD form 2992. I've talked to them about this but they said they want the regulation per the FAA cited in my application. Can anybody help me find it? I'm on leave right now so I can't really get to a computer and my cell reception is spotty at best.

  10. I need some help here. I've been trying for a long time to figure out how to transfer from the active Army to the USAF Reserves or National Guard. I've already taken the AFOQT and TBAS and got great scores. Here is the background. I have two kids in EFMP. I need to relocate to a place closer to family but I do not want to give up on the military. I already have 10 years in. I'm currently a commissioned Army pilot. I am a pilot at heart and that is what I'm going to do for the rest of my life. The problem is that my kids need stability and they need to be near family. It's getting to the point where the marriage will suffer. I have read into the regulations and i…

First off, I want to say thanks to everyone whom has contributed to this forum. Awesome resource. Second, hoping for a little help/guidance. Background: Currently a CW2 in the ARNG with 800 hours in the UH-60, (PC/AMC) looking to make the transfer to AF Reserves/ANG. I want to stay Rotary Wing; on my last deployment I did some MEDEVAC chase stuff, really enjoyed the mission. Right now I work as a Faculty Research Engineer in Ga. Have an undergrad in Mech Engineering, grad in Aeronautics, starting PhD in Mech Engineering in 2019 at the University I work for (I can defer if needed). I spoke to a reserve recruiter, basically told me to pound sand. The ANG recruiter told me m…

Filed under the list of shit I knew a month ago...Don’t show up to your Reserve unit the day after your separation date. It doesn’t matter and everything will be messed up. That being said, can anyone help with a pay question on UTA lodging? My DOS was 1 Aug and I reported to my unit on 2 Aug. They gave me 4 UTA periods and 15 AT days to build up some time (I’m a TR). I want to do the 4 UTA blocks First so they cover my hotel the night before and then the AT days on the back half somit covers my travel home. The problem is I am not in any system so the lodging for my UTA days is just on my GTC instead of booked through the UTA office. My question is how can I…

Hello all, I’m a junior in high school, and my dream job is to become an AF pilot. I’ve been hanging around this forum as well as getting in touch with some AF pilots on airlinepilotcentral. I heard from an F-16 guy in the ANG that a good route to go is to enlist in the guard/reserves before college to get it paid for and then apply to units after college. The other routes I could go would be either to not enlist before college and apply to units afterwards or to do ROTC and then hope for a guard/reserve spot. For me, I think ROTC would be a huge risk because the chance of getting selected for ANG/AFRC instead of AD is pretty low from what I understand, not to mentio…

I apologize if this has been asked before, I did a search and couldn’t find anything. Is it possible to go from Active Duty to ANG UPT while I still have time left on my contract? Is something like this treated as a palace chase? I’ve done a little research and couldn’t find anything about it.

Okay - I've found a few different threads that sort of tackled this question but I was hoping to get a better thread put together for this. I just realized that I could apply for Guard units (and that they existed), and that opens up a few more doors to me in terms of available units to apply to. I'm looking to stay somewhat local if possible, and I found some Guard units near me that fly the planes I'm most interested in. It would be ideal if I could get a slot at one of the local ones so I can be more involved in the unit's activities and have more opportunities to fly and is just better for long term (I'm in it for the long haul!). I don't have a problem moving for a f…

  16. I am a former C-130 nav and Army CH-47D pilot. I have been sitting in staff job for the last five years and would like to get back into flying. Since the Fixed Wing Qualification course was cancelled in 2012, I am only limited helicopters in the USAF. Does anyone know about any ANG/Reserve HH-60 units willing to accept out-of-state commuters?

I am one year away from high school graduation and I am dead set on going to my local college which has an associates degree program in aviation. Reason being, if I don't get picked up by an ANG unit then I would already have my civilian ratings done and there to fall back on. Plus finances aren't an issue because my parents are completely willing to pay for it all, so I felt it was my best option. Though, it is only an associates degree program, so I would transfer to Utah Valley University to finish my degree online as many others from the program have. My question is, would getting an online degree hold me back from getting selected for an ANG pilot slot?

Hello, I'm new to this board, of which has been resourceful to me. So first off thanks everyone for your attention to this and helping others by taking time to give input! I realize this is rather long, so I'm grateful for anyone who sits down to read through this and give your advice!! A quick snippet of me and my situation - Always had inside me the heart to be a pilot for the air force, but due to a number of factors I decided against it and took another route. Spent 4 years in school for actuarial science, and spent additional 2200+ hours of studying to be an Actuary. If I'm honest, I never thought about what I wanted to do and just picked this path because…

  19. Looking for anyone who may have first hand experience on this track, or are on the receiving end of this that can give me any information/recommendations whatsoever on the process. I'm looking to commission into a guard unit straight from ROTC. I am a 7 year ANG vet and I'm now on scholarship with ROTC at a part 141 flight school. I can provide more information if necessary. This process is quite new and i have spoken with the Col. who is the man in charge of the program. He said i would be the first one to go through this program and he would like to use me as a success story so i'm really trying to make this happen. Anything helps!

  22. I’m curious if anyone has experience and/or advice for my situation. I’m a former 13B left AD in 2012. Transitioned to IRR and after establishing civilian career, attempted to join ALO unit as Cat E reservist. During the enrollment process I crossed 2 years in the IRR and was unexpectedly discharged. Fast forward a couple years later, I’m looking to rejoin the Reserve to finish my 20. I understand the administrative process to get me back in is going to take a year or more, but looking beyond that I’m trying to get a feel for how I should approach prospective units to get hired with a sizable break in service. I work/live close to MacDill so I’m looking there. Any guidanc…

Anybody know anything about PV promotions in the reserve. Looking at stats it's <20% to O-5 for IMAs (lower than the other line categories). What's the gouge on how to be competitive? I mean, besides PME. Does a guy with lots extended AD have a better shot than a part-timer? Do higher-level positions have better luck than lower (HAF vs Wg for example)? Just curious. Lot's of sites have the regulatory info, but I can find any analysis. As an IMA it's not like I have a unit to go ask either. Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I apologize in advance for what may be a dumb post, however I cant seem to find any info on this after doing some searching. I am in the process of preparing my application for Reserve and ANG units, and intend on applying to as many locations as possible. I'm compiling a list of some locations and cant seem to find whether or not there is a reserve unit at Holloman, and if so, would such units send anyone to UPT, or is Holloman primarily a B-Course/training location? Thanks!

  25. First of all sorry if this is in the wrong section, I couldn't decide which one it fit in best. So lately I've been applying to UPT boards for the Guard while also working with an enlisted Guard recruiter as a backup plan in case nobody picked me up because this particular unit hires pilots almost exclusively from their pool of enlisted people. This past week I had two major developments - 1) my recruiter locked down a job in Aviation Resource Management for me, and 2) I got in touch with a reserve recruiter for the first time (for some reason I never really looked into them before and I'm kicking myself over it now) who thinks I have a pretty good shot at either a s…
