Pilot Selection Process

Questions about Pilot selection? Undergraduate Pilot Training - How to prepare, how to get a pilot slot. Please post your questions about your specific scores in the "what are my chances" forum.

  1. Gents, I'm talking to a recruiter about becoming a pilot for the USAF. He told me that my eligibility for UPT could be considered without committing to the USAF. This seems a little too good to be true. Anybody know if he's exaggerating or just flat out lying? (I meet all requirements of becoming an officer). Thanks Leon

  2. Started by Rhade,

I have been selected for a UPT slot with an ANG unit. I am trying to make the difficult decision of whether or not to seize this opportunity. In other circumstances I wouldn't hesitate to jump right in and sign the paperwork. However my fiance (together 10 years) is a type 1 diabetic and has numerous health problems. She is still young/healthy enough that she can take care of herself for the most part, but I would like to be there as much as possible for emotional support and she would stay behind if I left to support us financially as an engineer. So my question is how reasonable would it be to expect to fly home on weekends while at UPT. Again I would be in UP…

  3. What happens between different phases of training - i.e. the gap between OTS and UPT, or UPT and survival school, or whatever. How long are these gaps typically? Would I just remain at my home station during this time?

I'm a junior in high school and I'm taking a college class that is offered by my local community college. To pass the class and get the credits you must get an A,B, or a C. The teacher informed me that only the credits pass onto your college and not the grade. Understanding now that Grades are part of your PCSM , will my grade in this class transfer to my PCSM in the future?

  6. Started by plumbob,

I have been lurking and learning from this forum quite a bit in the past several months. I am currently enlisted as a TR and a C130 crew chief. I just turned 28 in January. I have been doing private flight lessons here and there but will ramp that up to try and get a full PFL hopefully by the time comes. Where does one go to find out AFOQT test dates? I have been studying and feel like I can take it. On another note I will be officially through with my degree program beginning first week of May. What steps do I need to take to find a pilot slot? I was going to go through my local AD recuiter for AD service but Guard/Reserve is through the individual uni…

I don't think this overlaps with the ENJJPT Information thread as I searched it pretty thoroughly, but if it does I'm sorry and someone just point me in the right direction! I was curious as to the overall process of getting selected for ENJJPT. As in how many people are selected? What are the average scores of those selected? do they want letters of recommendation? etc... any info as to the process of being picked up for ENJJPT would be helpful! Thanks.

  9. Started by Cubic,

All, Looking at UPT base selection process near the end of October. Curious if anyone has any info/leads on the current status of each base's start dates and the possibility of them being delayed with sequestration. Also, considering applying for ENJJPT (decently competitive) and the possibility of a later start date than Columbus/Vance/Laughlin. Is it worth it to potentially wait a year for ENJJPT or is it better to go to standard UPT with an immediate start date? Thanks to all who reply, truly appreciate it.

  10. If I apply to this board, but I graduate in December , will they still accept my package for selection? I was told packages are due 23 NOV, and my grad date is 20th DEC. Looking to go active duty pilot slot if the unit I'm interviewing with doesn't hire me in a few weeks. Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk

Dudes/Dudettes, I recently learned I was selected to trade my stripes for bars and attend UPT. I've learned a great deal from this forum. A lot of the info helped me be successful at the board and I know I will continue to learn from the grey beards in this community. I dont have have much else to say besides thanks for the guidance and answering whatever stupid questions I've asked and will continue to ask. I'm off to sharpen my popcorn making skills!

  12. Does anyone know how the process works for the AD board? The board met yesterday and I heard it usually takes a couple weeks for them to release the results. Do the squadron commanders call us in to let us know if we got picked up or turned down? Or just if we get picked up? Or do we just have to check mypers to find out? Thanks!

I'm looking at enrolling into Utah Valley University's online Professional Pilot B.S. Program this Fall semester and looking to see if anyone has heard or used the program. The program seems to be a good match for me (ground school online and fly at local FBO) with the family/work and any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Also, where can I found out if the bachelor degree is recognized by the USAF? I have attempted to contact the local officer recruiter to verify this, but no luck in receiving a call back. Thank you. https://www.uvu.edu/catalog/current/departments/aviation-science/aviation-science-professional-pilot-emphasis-bs/index.html

PILOT: 96 NAV: 73 ACAD APT: 49 VERBAL: 53 QUANT: 45 PCSM 83 , 86 with 80 hours (currently 69) 90 with 101 hours . I am hoping my 3.5 gpa and pcsm will help my chances. Took exactly 3 weeks to receive both.

  15. Hi there, I've been selected to interview with the 106th RQW. I am beyond excited and preparing as well as I can. There will be a meet and greet followed by a formal interview the next morning. I've read that it's important to report in and I was wondering if that applies to civilian candidates as well. I'm guessing not, and my recruiter never said a word about it but I was also thinking that it could show that I've done my homework and am putting in the effort to do things "right". However, I also don't want to show any disrespect or cause any confusion. Is it weird if I report in? (e.g. "Candidate Garcia reports as requested")

Hi all, I don't like to toot my horn...for the most part have lurked these forums doing as much searching as possible and reading old threads for guidance as I submit my packets. That said, I just got my scores back and am just feeling really pleased and excited, I'm sure you remember the feeling. Mostly this is a thread to just thank everyone for all the collective wisdom that exists here. There are a lot of smart people here who have worked hard to get similar scores to me so obviously many of us pre-selectees are in a similar boat but I'm happy to feel like I've taken one more small step towards the bigger goal of flying in service to our country. AFOQT/PCSM Sc…

  17. Hey guys, I was looking at the past couple PSDM announcements for the UFT boards. On last year's PSDM, it said this: B. All applicants who meet eligibility requirements as defined in AFI 36-2205 may apply. However, opportunities may be limited or restricted for some rated applicants in critical weapon systems in order to maintain acceptable operational manning levels. Applicants must meet all other eligibility criteria to apply for UFT. Pilot, CSO, ABM and RPA Pilot Training Applicants: Date of Birth after 1 Apr 1984 (max age 30). Total Federal Commissioned Service Date (TFCSD) after 1 Apr 2009. Does that mean for the last board you had to commission af…

  19. I was recently notified that I have been selected for both an active duty pilot slot as well as a slot at my local ANG unit in my home town. I'm having problems deciding which slot to accept. The local ANG squadron flies C130s which seems like a very cool platform to fly, and it would be amazing to be local my entire career around family because it is where I grew up. I also plan to fly for the airlines one day and most of the pilots in the unit fly for the airlines so I would have a lot of connections to the majors. However it is tempting to go active duty for the outstanding benefits and the chance at fighters which has been a dream of mine. However after looking at rec…

  20. Good Afternoon Gents, I am set to take the AFOQT for the first time this Tuesday at a local AFROTC Det and was just informed that this will be the last time the AFOQT Series S will be administered. After this test date, all future tests will be the Series T. Does anyone know what the difference will be between the Series S and Series T? Is it a whole new test with a different format and subtest structure? WIll there be substantial differences between the two? I am seeking guidance on this because in the event of a retest, I wouldn't want to take a test that is a completely different from the first test that I had taken. Thanks in advance for all the help …

I'm about to mail off my UPT application package: Any advice on how to put the package together?...folder? 6-part folder? paperclip? staples? I didn’t see any guidance in AFI 36-2205 beyond the necessary items. Additionally, I was looking back at a post from 2003 that talked about a "cover letter" for the package. I didn't see that in the AFI either...did any of you submit a cover letter? If so, what did you put on it. Thanks for the help. MK

Hello, So, long story short I have the AFOQT scheduled in three weeks and have a few questions regarding preparation. I have been studying extensively for four months now and feel very confident with the questions in the various AFOQT study guides. However, I am trying to take it one step further and have been recently studying the GRE math sections as recommended on wantscheck. The concepts and level of math in the GRE however, seem a lot more intense then that of the AFOQT study guides. Needless to say this is starting to decrease my confidence, especially in the math sections. My question for those of you who have taken the AFOQT is, do the study guides such as AR…

Is it odd that the board still has not been announced for Jan 2015? I thought I read before that they have to announce the board at least 6 months prior the board meeting. Last year it was announced on 14 August and the year before was in June or July. It's almost September and still no board. Is that a sign it might not happen?
