Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Here is the story: B-1 rolls into vehicles after landing The Associated Press Posted : Sunday Mar 9, 2008 8:24:56 EDT RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Air Force says a B-1B bomber from Ellsworth Air Force Base collided with two emergency-response vehicles Friday after landing at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. The bomber declared an in-flight emergency shortly after leaving the base and then landed, Ellsworth said in a release. After coming to a stop on the taxiway, the craft started to roll on its wheels and collided with the vehicles, according to Air Force officials. Details on how the accident occurred were not provided. No one was injured. The crew had l…

From CNN: https://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/03/03...lane/index.html Another second or two, the result could have been catastrophic. Does anyone have any good stories of being a PAX on a commercial flight that looked like this?

  7. Anybody seen this yet? Read the link to the letter in the article. AF times article I see how the zookeeper takes care of things: “We’ve had individuals injured downtown, having had to go to an emergency room or having been victims of criminal activity,” he said. “Sometimes it could be wrong place, wrong time. Sometimes it could be a bad decision.” What sizeable American city does not have these things happening?

This should be a big story in the coming weeks. Should be fun to watch the widespread panic intensify if the Space dudes calculate this thing taking aim at CONUS. Oh yeah, FEMA may get involved sez the article. Can't wait for the inevitable questions of "Why wasn't FEMA prepared for this?" or "How can China shoot a Sat in Space and we can't?" Didn't we use to have an ASAT program with F-15 ? Star Wars comes to mind. Ahh the good ole days. ----------------------------------------------------- By LOLITA C. Before I share my story, I just want to say that this is not intended to be an academy bashing thread. I simply thought I'd share a funny thing that happened to me at the gym yesterday. So there I was lifting here at Shaw yesterday, and this guy who is decked out in USAFA clothing is using all the same equipment as I am. So after a few min I say hi and ask him what he does. He says that he is a pilot. I ask him what squadron he is in, and he says he's going to pilot training next month. I kindly respond by saying, "If you haven't graduated pilot training I wouldn't go around saying that you ARE a pilot buddy." Quickly he says that's sir to you. This is where I g…

The following is a true story that occurred Friday at my base and to me, illustrating why I believe the USAF over-relies on computers: 0700: Pull up to the gate, I hand my CAC (that's what it is now) to the SF guy and he looks it over. The bottom right portion of the card is pealing up (due to shoving it in/out of the CAC readers) and my expiration date is hard to view. SF guy says "You need to go to MPF and get a new ID card because this one is unreadable. Many cars behind me, so rather than subject others to a wait...I move out smartly. 0900: Enter MPF, only two people getting cards, so this SHOULD go quickly. I was very wrong. Getting a new CAC is an exercise in f…

So just for fun (and without getting into anyone's gambling habits) whats everyone's pick for the game today? With more spygate stuff coming out this week, part of me says the Pats will come in and win by 4 scores. But I think I'd have to take the Giants to cover the 12 point spread. Either way, not flying tomorrow so its time to enjoy things tonight. When the hell are they going to move something that has reached national holiday status to Saturday night?

Looking at post-USAF retirement spots. St George or Kanab look awesome, asking if anyone has spent time at either place? No, I am not basing my decision on any info gathered here, but a few data points will be useful as I can't get out there for several more months to see for myself. Anyone been there?

Not sure how many of you watch American Idol, but tonight might be a good time to tune in. A Captain by the name of Lyndsey Goodman will be on tonight. She grew up right down the road from me, went to the USAFA, and now flies the C-17. You can hear some of her music and read more about her at her myspace page.
