February 23, 20169 yr My SR's slides said... I/APZ: 50% DP BPZ: 10% DP Overall: 84% promotion opportunity
February 24, 20169 yr The AMC message sent to the wings said 58% I/APZ and 10% BPZ but those were tentative as of Oct.
February 24, 20169 yr AETC student MLR was given 48% I/APZ DP allocation. If AMC got over 50%, good for them. Seems like about 50 is the going rate in AETC and AFSOC.

February 24, 20169 yr Higher opportunity rate could just be a byproduct of a smaller pool (thanks to RIF & otherwise stellar retention). But it's late and my giveadamn-o-meter failed.

I'm considering declining it, understanding that I will not get involuntary sep pay. My question is with regards to the GI Bill transfer ADSC and the bonus. I'll have about a year left on the GI bill ADSC and two years left on the bonus. Do I keep the GI bill benefits if I decline continuation before the ADSC is up? Will they recoup any of the bonus outside of prorated unearned portions? Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk There are a few of us lurking around who did exactly this last year... I haven't heard of 1 regret! In short, if you do not serve out the GI Bill xfer ADSC, your dependents lose it (you can still use it for yourself!). They are supposed to recoup the "unearned" portion of the bonus. The AF has made this a huge CF in my case when it came down to calculating my final pay after separation. I kept fighting & fighting with my local finance office after I separated, telling them my taxable income was wrong due to the way DFAS went about recouping the bonus among other things (like totally forgetting that I still got flight pay through my final month of service). Basically, DFAS put me on the hook, owing my unearned portion of bonus pre-tax... so I owed big blue more than the $18,750 after taxes. They started to recoup this from my final paycheck, so it was pretty much zero. Then the way they work advance debt payments and all that BS totally f'd up my taxable income. I finally received a corrected W-2 last week which reduced my taxable income by about $18k+ giving me another $3K+ of tax return $$ from the amendment. FYSA, my bonus payment was in Sep, with a 30 Nov separation-- so a big chunk unearned. Since I owed so much, my final pay didn't cover the debt... so now the remaining balance has gone to DFAS out of service debt... whom I've submitted inquiries/claims to because my indebtedness balance is wrong based on all of the "by-hand" final pay calculations my local finance off completed when I left. YMMV- Big blue also dicked up my DD-214 and tried listing me in reserve (IRR) status when that is totally not part of the deal when declining continuation (never sign a SoU/A)... So I already have amended DD-214s I have to lug around for life & still have a green reserve ID card I need to turn in somewhere down the road (2-hrs from nearest installation!). Despite that crap, I'm happy to be out! Just keep an eye on your sh!t 'cause no one else is there to help!
February 26, 20169 yr I'd turn in that ID card to your shredder rather than drive 4 hours round trip to turn it in.

February 27, 20169 yr Keeping an ID isn't as useful as it once was ti get into base your card gets scanned and only your most current card is recognized. The others are taken and you will be in trouble for using an old card if you aren't even in the military anymore, it will be worse You also have to scan your ID to use the commissary. They are pretty worthless now, unless you want to get 15% off at your fav restaurant
February 28, 20169 yr Recently had 2 guys in my flight not make Major whom I think are deserving. Am I allowed (as their Flight Commander) to write a letter to the board on their behalf for their APZ look?
February 28, 20169 yr Letters to the board must be written by the member being considered for promotion. However, they can include a letter you write as an attachment to their letter to the board if they choose to write one. Mypers has a a pretty good section about what is/is not allowed on this subject. Edited February 28, 20169 yr by osulax05

So the flight commander thinks they should have been promoted but nobody else up their chain of command thinks so? I think your efforts are better spent communicating with the senior rater and figuring out what they need to do to get the APZ DP (Wing Exec/staff/CAG, etc.). Unless something was wrong in their record, in which case maybe it can be corrected for a supplemental. Edited February 28, 20169 yr by Homestar

February 29, 20169 yr Overall. Figure 2-3% for BPZ and APZ given historical trends so about 81-82% for IPZ.
February 29, 20169 yr That's still up almost 10% from last year if that's the case. Pretty significant.

The promotion opportunity was 84%: - There were 1,727 people considered for promotion In the Promotion Zone (IPZ) - 1,451 total were promoted (a number equal to 84% of the IPZ pool) - The reality is that folks selected Below and Above the Promotion Zone (BPZ and APZ) "stole" some of that promotion opportunity from the IPZ group: -- 145 were selected for promotion BPZ, and 62 APZ. This meant only 1,244 were promoted IPZ out of a pool of 1,727 candidates, for an IPZ promotion rate of 72% -- The net effect is that BPZ and APZ folks decreased the IPZ rate by 12%. The point is this: those who stay on active duty have a surprisingly good chance of making O-5. For the current IPZ year group, about 84% who made O-4 and bother to stay on active duty will end up getting promoted to O-5. The top 8% were already selected BPZ at a prior board. The top 72% of those left over were just selected as "on time" IPZ types. Another 4% will get picked up APZ at a future board. The Air Force's plan to grow the force (which should mean more O-5 and above requirements) and airline hiring (which will reduce competition) means you guys are in the cat bird's seat. TT
February 29, 20169 yr DP will be near 100%, P will be around 50%. There is your most important marker.
March 1, 20169 yr 11 hours ago, Homestar said: DP will be near 100%, P will be around 50%. There is your most important marker. I disagree. The point is, with an 84% O-5 promotion opportunity, you will pin on Lt Col, so long as you're not in the bottom 16% of your commissioning year group who: (a) made O-4, and (b) bothered to stay on active duty. - Having a DP going into a board is awesome, but--again--as long as you're somewhere close to the middle of the pack relative to your peers, you will pin on silver oak leaves One more thing: gender matters. - 174 females were selected for O-5 (total--BPZ, IPZ and APZ). There were 188 IPZ female eligibles; this equates to a female promotion opportunity of 92.5% - 1,277 males were selected for O-5, when there were 1,539 IPZ male eligibles; this equates to a male promotion opportunity of 83.0% If you really want to get promoted, be a girl.
