Giving guys and girls their wings after a T-6 only syllabus. More time in the air is the fix.

Regardless, if you are on an IFR clearance, without declaring you can't just decide to change altitudes on your own. Dude goes on to say "we were trying to prevent declaring an emergency"....then you need a clearance!
