October 4, 201312 yr As a tribute to Mr. Clancy, Charlie Rose played part of an interview he conducted with the author in 1996; it starts at about 46 minutes. Incidentally, the first part of the show is a discussion with Benjamin Netanyahu that's worth the watch. https://www.charliero.../watch/60275377 Cheers to Mr. Clancy; a great man who was dedicated to his craft, his country, and our nation's military. October 6, 201312 yr So pleased he was able to live a long and free life. In fact, many continue to enjoy a long and free life due to heroes like Nick Oresko. God bless you sir. FM
October 6, 201312 yr Like HU&W said, his books were an early inspiration for me to join the military; I borrowed The Hunt For Red October from my grandfather in '85 or '86... followed shortly by Red Storm Rising and Patriot Games. I ended up with all of his "major" books in my collection, and I've re-read them all several times over the years.
October 11, 201312 yr "To this day, there are veterans of the 1/7 CAV who are convinced that God may look like CSM Plumley, but HE is not nearly as tough as the Sergeant Major on sins small or large." - Excerpt from his Army Times obituary It is with a heavy heart that we report that CSM Basil Plumley passed away at 0400hrs this morning, 10 OCT 2012, after being diagnosed with Colon Cancer and moved to a Hospice a little over a week ago. CSM Plumley lost his first battle on this day, but i am sure he is now whipping Heaven in to shape, as his Soldiers meet him at the gates in formation. CSM Plumley was the epitome of a Soldier and a Warrior. RIP CSM, you have done your time in Hell, now it is time for you to rest. Thanks to you for all you have done for this country and our freedom. Words can never express the gratitude we have for you and the selfless service you have given to this great country.
October 11, 201312 yr Holy crap...can't believe I missed that. And can't believe I didn't know he passed away. Quibbling: This time last year I was in the brain sucking land of the Deid so that might explain it...
October 13, 201312 yr It's tough to lose any of The Greatest Generation, but Joe Gomer was a proud Duluthian, and Duluth was proud to have him. He was Minnesota's last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, and was a very humble person. I recall the first time I met him, at a Cirrus company picnic sitting quietly in his wheelchair watching Tora Tora Tora perform their practice airshow for the upcoming Duluth Airshow. He was a genuine man, and held no bitterness towards America's past; "We’re all Americans. That’s why we chose to fight. I’m as American as anybody. My black ancestors were brought over against their will to help build America. My German ancestors came over to build a new life. And my Cherokee ancestors were here to greet all the boats."-Joe Gomer rather was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice for it. RIP Major Gomer. https://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/280290/group/News/
October 23, 201312 yr You think he would have signed that memo banning "so to speaks" and use of the number 69? Godspeed to another old school warrior who hadn't lost focus of what's important.

October 28, 201312 yr From today's New York Times: In later years, General Risner participated in reunions of airmen. At a gathering in the 1990s, he met a Russian MIG-15 ace who had been in Korea at the same time. The other pilot wondered if they had ever faced each other in combat. “No way,” General Risner replied. “You wouldn’t be here.” https://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/28/us/robinson-risner-ace-fighter-pilot-dies-at-88.html?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=edit_th_20131028
