It's Friday of OSH 2016 and nobody''s said anything.  Did anyone make it there this year?  Even vansairforce.net has been pretty quiet.

Met Huggy for the first time at Oshkosh today.  Here he is enthusiastically holding court and patiently answering all questions from the audience in the dreadful heat.  Came back an hour later and was

Great!  We will be on the south end of Boeing Plaza with you.  The Deuce now arrives Sunday ~1230, after a drop in to the Milwaukee Airshow. The guy flying it is from Fond du Lac.

I went for just Wednesday. As expected, amazing time.

Lots of rumor and scuttlebutt about EAA losing big patrons. I'd like to see their financials for the past year.

I've always thought it should be a biannual event. Yearly is just too much. (But I used to work for an oem manufacturer so I "had" to go every year.)

That’s so true… On a similar note, when my son was in college he met a gal who worked the “OPS desk” for a local bible college which runs a substantial missionary aviation program.  She was cranking about how she had to go to some stupid week long airshow in Wisconsin of all places!  He tried to set her straight and even volunteered to take her place for the trip but no luck.  Poor girl… (and yes, she worked in a missionary position… so-to-speak)

Spelling is hard...

I was there from Tuesday through Saturday. It is truly one of the best weeks of my year. It seemed that the military presence was down bit from last year, or maybe it just seemed that way because of the two years before that when there was virtually nothing mil there. As usual I got to meet some amazing people. One cattle rancher from Oklahoma who was there with his Marchetti s.211 gave one of my Zoo recruits a ride in his jet and I think helped solidify her decision to go AF. I also got a 2-hour VIP golf cart tour of the grounds with Nicole, the lovely young digital media specialist for EAA. If you're ever there and want to see everything with a pleasant, constant narrative, she is the person to see.

Couldn't agree more.  My first fly-in was '76; I was still in the stroller.  My grandfather's first fly-in was the first one in '53; he manned the crash crew that the WI-ANG supplied, as he and Paul served together in the 128th.  It can't be summer in Wisconsin without Oshkosh.

I'll just leave this here; best Oshkosh arrival video I've seen:

I’m flying in to Oshkosh for the first time this year and looking for some advice from those that have done it. I’m assuming we have a few lurking around here.

I’m flying a rental in, so schedule is pretty fixed. Renting from a school that’s within 100mi of OSH, and planning to get up at the ass crack for a morning arrival on Monday the 24th with another first thing in the am departure on the 27th (all weather permitting of course).

I’ve been to Oshkosh 10 times now, so I understand the flow of the show, parking/campaign areas, etc… For those that are familiar with how the GA camping fills up, will there still be spots in the North 40 open early Monday morning or am I likely headed to the South 40? That N40 just seems like the primo camping from a show access, off grounds shopping, SOS Bros tent, etc… standpoint.

I saw in the ‘23 NOTAM you can request North or South 40. I plan to make a North sign but wonder how I should set my expectations? Any other advice or tips would be greatly appreciated for camping on grounds. Previous years we’ve always done a hotel in Green Bay.

Looks like you have all your bases covered.   Due to some of the recent issues with weather and heavy traffic,  there has been a trend of people arriving earlier.  I have been arriving on Saturday morning for years.  There used to be minimal traffic, but the last two years, it’s been pretty busy.   The north 40 has been filling up earlier than in past years, hence the expansion of the south forty.  You should be good Monday morning, but it’s still a roll of the dice.

you are correct, the north forty is more ideal.  Much shorter walks when the trams shut down in the evening.  I’ve been spoiled for the last decade being in HBC with my RV-10.

I'm just hoping the Canadians get the fires under control by then.  Otherwise the conga line arrivals are going to be interesting with marginal visibility.

Appreciate the insight 👍

I didn't even consider the wildfires since we've been pretty much unaffected down where I live. But yeah, looks like everything in WI is MVFR at best right now.

I know they added more spots on the south side in the last few years.  I think typically tues/wed is the peak of traffic when they have turned non "showplanes" (experimental, vintage, warbird) away.

I'll be in HBC all week in my RV-6.  I really hope the smoke stays away.  Flying into the show is quite the experience. I feel like the last two times i've flown in the arrival line started about 60miles from the field going past endeavor bridge.  But i've always shown up at peak times in the afternoon.

Fortunately, it appears that the smoke issue has been minimized for the last week or so.   The photos I’ve seen from a friend the is currently volunteering at OSH appears to be clear skies there as well.

They added another new area just NW of the south forty this year.  You got to give them credit for constantly increasing parking areas to accommodate everyone flying into the show.  I’ll be flying in early Saturday and joining you in HBC.

Taking my private student for his first time early in the week, and my instrument student Saturday. They are gonna have their minds blown 🙂

Yeah I’m expecting S40 on Monday morning, but we’ll see. My wife and I did just buy some folding bikes that we’re going to have a family member who’s driving in drop off for us at our camp site. Should make the trek to and from the S40 more palatable and also be able get to and from the SOS Bros tent once the busses and trams stop running.

CFI of the year.

I could spend all day listening to the controlled chaos at Oshkosh.  Turboprops and B-25s orbiting Warbird Island, traffic for Fisk extending back almost to Madison, runway closures due to disabled aircraft, controllers who never miss a beat, and the occasional old timer who feels the need to chime-in when he feels he's been wronged.

Entertaining stuff.

We’re still on track for the Fisk arrival tomorrow morning. Looks like the big FU is back in the forecast though. Not excited about that; it’ll be interesting to see what the actual visibility is.

Close call at Oshkosh today as a Bonanza ended up landing on runway 36L instead of 18R. ATC handled it well but it put lots of folks into a holding pattern around the Green and Puckaway Lakes while the ensuing disruption to traffic got cleared up. ATC audio is here and starts at about 1m 30s.

If you follow GA and racing you may know Mike Patey who has helped develop a lot of new tech the past few years building experimental airplanes.  He recently built the fastest single engine turbine when he put a PT-6 on a Lancair Legacy creating a new plane he calls the Turbulence.

He was flying the Turbulence to Oshkosh and was about 200 miles west his PT-6 blew apart at 441 Knots in his at FL 220.  Video below covers the deadstick and post flight walk around of his plane (frag damage to wing and tail).

Took my private student for the day yesterday. Three laps in the arrival with a buttload of joe sixpacks, 5 miles in trail because of the smoke and a closed runway, guy balled one up on takeoff.

 My stud got an education

Any first hand reports from Oshkosh? Sounds like a couple of accidents. I heard one was a T-6 but haven’t seen official reports. Prayers for all involved.

Probably should let it play out, like most mishaps.
The T-6 loss affected a number of us. Devyn was awesome.
