Deployment Gear

I'm packing up this weekend. Anybody got any good ideas on stuff to make a long deployment more enjoyable? No need to post the obvious: I already have booze, porn, and an inflatable girlfriend.

You might want to spring for a PSP (play station portable) if you're into the whole video gaming deal. You can use it to play games and movies, I hear. Pricey, though...but still available at your local BX.

More porn...you can never have enough porn!

Have fun, not sure if I will be visiting you in the near future, all depends on where my new organization wants to send me, but DCUs might be in my picture as well. However, hitting 20 years of AD in less than two months, I may be able to jump into retirement as with the current force shaping going on, ADSC waivers are being given out like doped candy at the Neverland Ranch. I could be growing a beard, wearing a tie, and complaining about the AD folks in two months as well!

Cheers! M2

- A laptop with a good supply of DVDs and some games for those times when I need to just "veg out" or watch a movie to unwind before I catch some Zs in crew rest... Then again, I'm a nerd and I like that stuff.

- Some sort of MP3 player.. you just gotta have tunes.

There's my 2 suggestions... Be safe, Beaver. Look for an inflatable sheep.. the girlfriend will get old after a while. LOL!

Cheers!

Linda

How about some Danielle Steel books, lace underwear, and candles.

Always worked for Mingo.

Linda,

Get to work!!

Ditto on that. Laptop is a life saver. Take a 25 or more carrying case with all the DVDs, CDs, and games you can stuff.

Anyone been to the Pat Tillman USO rec center yet? That place fuggin rocks.

I'm deploying this May and have two gear questions:

1. Is one of those thin rubber covers for my laptop keyboard in order? I'll be in a CHU, FWIW.

2. I have a nice set of $180 polarized Oakleys. I can find non-polarized Oakleys on eBay for nearly half that price (I know, don't tell me, its hard to tell which Oakleys are real online). Would you suggest that I buy some online as a beater pair? I'm not a pilot, I'm an aerial porter, but whatever experience you have is helpful.

Thanks!

#1 should be referred to as a keyboard condom from now on...never hurts to carry a rubber IMHO

Definitely bring a cheaper pair of glasses, you will wear them all the time. In fact, at least a few sets. As APS, you will sweat, A LOT, all day long, every day, even when you are not working, the only time you won't sweat is when you dip your sheets in water and crank your AC all the way... Bring plenty of Under Armor, shave all your hair off, and get some of those sweat band things that richard simmons wears, you will fit right in... Unless you are overweight, then bring some trash bags to wear and you will sweat it away in a week.... good times!

Y'all go ahead and laugh, but those $9 blue-tinted safety glasses from the hardware store (ie Lowe's) are all I've worn for most anything over the past couple of years. They wrap around, look alright, are hard to scratch, and of course are "safety glasses". I've run over a pair with my truck and they didn't shatter, just smushed.

I keep a pair of nice polarized for fishing only (so I can see the channels and don't run aground.) Otherwise the aforementioned are all I wear for flying, riding, hunting, jetskiing, whatever. Buy 4 or 5 pair and they last forever.

I'm curious what the normal stateside requirement for number of ABU required. I'm deploying in January, as of 1 October the base has stopped issueing ABU. I'm having to buy 4 pair. I thought (can't find a reg to verify) that we were required to have 2 sets. Does anyone know if there is a reg that outlines this? If this is true, seems CENTCOM should pick up the tab for the other two sets.

Your UDM should have access to the AFCENT reporting instructions (they may be on the portal as well). The last revision I saw, which may be a bit dated, had 2 sets of either ABUs or DFDUs, and if you were authorized to wear the DFDU as your primary uniform there was no requirement for ABUs. This requirement has gone back and forth over the years, but even when ABUs were required the only folks in my squadron who ever wore them were the CC and the DO.

You might be $hit outta luck on this one dude. Big blue's rationale for not issuing ABUs anymore was that they are a required uniform item starting in November and, thus, they feel that they don't need to issue them to dudes anymore. Your UDM should have a copy of the official memo saying when the cutoff for being issued ABUs is, off the top of my head I cannot remember if it was 1 Oct or something more towards the middle of the month. If they can find something that supports the latter, have your UDM type up a Will-go letter since you won't have a line number yet and you can roll over to supply and pick up some ABUs. If your UDM can't find the memo, hit up your base's financial analysis office and make them prove the 1 Oct date.

To make things worse, everyone got their $$ pulled until the next budget is released. I just deployed and luckily I already had several DFDUs and ABUs from a previous deployment. I tried to get an extra flight suit and a boonie cap to replace the one that got lost, and I was told "we have no money, so they aren't buying anyone anything...if you need uniform items you have to buy them yourself". That's fine for most of the stuff, but what about flight suits? I can't just go out and buy a desert flight suit (and if I could they are still something like $200+ a piece).

The worst part about it is they told me about this just a few days before my departure date (UDM was trying to get the replacement stuff last minute) and now I have to wear that damn Marine Corps pointed cap...I hate it. As soon as I get set up I'm ordering a boonie cap so I don't look like a moron over here.
