Show-horses, Workhorses and Jackasses. These are the three types of people you have working for you. Show-horses are easy to identify, they are pedigreed, their reports are above the board and they have done no wrong, but at a certain point you can’t prove what they have done right… they have been preened and primped for so long that the next good deal is expected. In a certain amount of your requests to the squadrons for nominations for the next good deal job, there are some that will deliver less than the workhorse. They are the type when handed a shitty deal, will pull stakes and tell you no, because this assignment is beneath me…. The workhorse is the person you want to take note of. This person may be number 3 or 4 on your squadron commander’s list of people they want to see for said good opportunity. They are probably the guys and gals that everyone in the squadrons see as the go-to for when stuff needs to get done, the people that get overlooked because there are a couple show-horses in the way. The often respected and narrowly rewarded workhorse getting rewarded with a good deal usually elicits the following response from squadron mates: “about damn time that guy/gal got a good deal he/she is solid and I know they will work for me up at the Group/Wing etc.” The response when an overtired prima-dona show horse gets an impressive job is usually de-motivating. Seen as a reaffirmation of the status quo. Thus, as a group commander the people who are at the top are there because of past performance but not necessarily recent performance… The challenge is to identify the workhorses who deserve a showhorse treatment and identify the showhorses who need a kick in the ass. Speaking of asses, the jack-ass… causing the often mentioned 95% percent of your time devoted to the 5% causing the problems. It will distract you because you think the other guys, the other 5% who are the show-horses are solving all the problems are good… and carrying your load… it’s not true, at least at the squadron level…

Just a suggestion. MC12 guys should talk to U28 guys. We do have an FTU now but a lot of these challenges you mention in your community were addressed years ago. There should be a cross talk and just because it's ACC vs AFSOC doesn't mean that there isn't some common ground. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

And somehow this thread has demonstrated what's right in the Air Force. At least among the rated. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So I've heard rumors already of people applying for VSP and getting 365s. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
And for the trouble of flying them longer than their service life we all play test pilot/cso. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So if there are enough pilots volunteering to leave would they remove AFSCs from meeting the RIF or is it statutory requirement to RIF entire compcats together. Maybe they need to offer a more enticing package to the non rated line officers. 2 x Sep Pay. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2. It is a problem for sure. I'm also not a fan of simply having people as flight commander's simply because their board is soon. Problem under the current construct is that being a shitty leader doesn't catch up to you fast enough unless you screw up big time. It takes at least three to four years. I'm amazed that after not seeing a certain individual for three years and PCSing to a location he used to be at there is a strong consensus that individual x was a shitbag then and is a shit bag now. But he was a certain someone's golden boy. Certainly guys like this are the exception to the rule but they are also damaging to our institution. One well connected shit bag mediocre officer can be a dangerous thing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reverse OODA loop. Decide, Act, Observe and Orient. By the time the process is complete we can't remember the lessons we learned ie: Pilots are going to drop papers, pilots want out, its like there is no binder on the A1 shelf that says "2011 VSP/RIF Continuity." We're the best because when push comes to shove we can kill people, and break things better than most other Air Forces due to superior technology, resources and training. There is a theory about service before self, I am actually borrowing it from a buddy, in short, it was convenient to switch the model from "sorry about xyz assignment, it is the needs of the Air Force." In this situation the Air Force was both the cause and effect of a less than desirable duty assignment. Haul in "service before self," and the Air Force can effectively hand you something you don't like while smiling and telling you how great it is and acting like you are delusional when you don't like it. In the end, the person is the cause and effect of a crappy deal. I have to believe that in the beginning "service before self" was intended to provide MOTIVATION to our institution not as a means to CONVICT each other.

FY 14 Force Management Program (RIF, VSP, TERA)

A lot of this stuff could be fixed if they moved pilots, navs, abms, operators, blah blah blah everyone that hacks a mish into the "Line of the Air Force" and everyone else that "supports the mish" goes into the "Restricted Line" That way they can announce a RIF Board for the Restricted Line and get rid of the people they want to instead of actively misleading everyone. -

It will all come out in the wash... "well since you were ineligible for the VSP per the updated guidance and subsequently RIFed we owe you the difference. Oh wait, your salary from Sep-Jan is more than the difference of VSP and involuntary separation pay, so actually you owe us money".... And thus the number of people who applied for VSP (and were considered eligible) and RIFed... will be next to none, and then they get to keep their promises? What a train wreck... -
National Commission on the Structure of the Air Force

So at what level are the decisions made that can bring reservists onto Active Duty orders? I mean we all get 9/11 and we all get natural disasters and the such. That is what's great about the reserves because like you stated, you guys hav e the ability to say no to the bullshit but when it's go time, you guys go. If what this report is saying in my mind becomes reality, you guys would be absolutely butt raped by getting stuck with AD orders all the time as the AD leadership sees fit. It seems to me that without a reserve command to represent the interests of the strictly reserve you would need a union and contracts. -
Care to elaborate?

They can move you anyways... several people have been moved to CVS and their PCS ADSC was waived. -
I thought that is what it meant and always laughed at the Z in turn for the S.
