BF Yep, that's true; but HydraShoks are still a damn decent SD/HD round! The 230 grain has a proven track record in the .45, and where there may be some better rounds out there, I stick with what I know works in my pistols! I also have some Aguila 117gr "High Power" Fragmenting Hollow Points that I want to try out; but I wouldn't trust them for SD/HD as I think they are more a novelty round and not as reliable as other HPs. Plus, Centurian Ordnance, the company that imports them into the States, is literally less than a mile away from my house. That said, I think the next SD/HD rounds I am going to try are the Speer Gold Dots. Have heard good things about them, and would like to see how they do. If you have any other suggestions, I am always open to hear them. Cheers! M2

If it is at a deployed location and he deserves it, it should be a Bronze Star and not a MSM. But a BS/MSM for six months is gonna be a tough sell, unless the guy has some real, no-shit combat time under his belt. No bullshit here, I'm talking direct engagement here... Load it up with some 3" Magnum 00-buck and smile if the bad guy thinks he can hide behind your leather couch for protection! Hell, I would shoot through walls with that sucker without hesitation if someone were hiding behind one! The 5.56 NATO is derived from, but not entirely interchangeable with, the .223 Remington cartridge...military cases are generally made from thicker brass than commercial cases and the NATO specification allows a higher chamber pressure. Using commercial .223 cartridges in a 5.56-chambered rifle should work reliably, but generally will not be as accurate as when fired from a .223-chambered gun. 7.62 is plentiful as the AK is the most commonly-built assault rifle in the world. Its numbers far exceed those of the AR; and with a few exceptions, it is not used by US military forces... Cheers! M2

Jorry If you are talking assault rifles, as I mentioned I just picked up 1000 rounds of Monarch (Russian-made) 7.62x39 for $149.50. That is an exceptionally sweet deal, and tough to beat even at the gun shows As for .45ACP, believe it or not WalMart has been the best source. I get 100 rounds of Winchester White Box for $29. I only use it for range ammo, prefering Federal HydraShok HPs for self-defense, but all my .45s eat it like candy. Never had a problem with any loading or ejecting, but it is a little dirty. And you probably already know this, but for the rest of the crowd never, ever buy reloads from someone you don't know. My Canadian bud did so at a local gun show, and had all kinds of problems with them. Either reload yourself, or find someone you can trust and go back to if there are any problems. As for buying a gun before coming back, if you get it through a dealer I am sure they won't have a problem holding it for a few months for you, especially if you paid in advance for it. Or if you know where you are going, maybe the FFL you send it to will do the same for a nominal fee (if any). A straw purchase really only comes into play when the second recipient of the gun is not eligible to own it in the first place, like the two punks at Columbine. The problem with the aforementioned California bud is that he normally could not buy a weapon in another state and take it back to a state where he couldn't buy it in the first place. I don't think any of that applies in your case, so if the situation was you were PCS'ing to San Antonio, and wanted an AK-47; I could purchase one for you and then sell it to you when you arrived here, as you would be legally able to buy one yourself under Texas law. But next week when I go TDY to Charleston, where I could not buy a weapon because I am not a S.C. resident; I could not have someone who lives there buy it then turn around and sell it to me. The solution would be to have it sent to a FFL back here in Texas. Of course, private sales are different; but to avoid any problems I would stay within the confines of the laws for business sales of weapons when outside of my own home state. You do know that Arsenal, probably one of the best US-made AK-47s builders out there, is in Las Vegas, right? Cheers! M2

And I have heard the same from firsthand sources. Plus, there is no reason whatsoever for the sky cops to not allow a person to put a lock on their own gun. Absolutely none! As a matter of fact, it should be required that people have their own locks on their guns before they put them in the armory. C'mon, even TSA requires you to keep your weapon locked while transporting it in your luggage. The only reason the fucking cops don't want you to lock it is because they want to shoot it! Fuck them! If anyone is in the San Antonio area and runs up against this, I will be more than happy to store your weapons at my house. Of course, you also won't be able to put a lock on them when I am holding them for you; but at least you know they were in the hands of a competent shooter! The weapons I see the sky cops carrying where I work look like shit! I wouldn't even accept one if it were issued to me. Yeah, I got a helluva deal on mine. I had an Army bud heading to Iraq who asked me to "gun sit"his while he was gone. It was a pristine example with beautiful furniture on it, and very accurate (I had shot it before). Here are a couple of pics... When he got back, he wanted to buy an old M1911 so once he found one, I gave him cash for it. That had been my plan from the onsete, figuring out a way to separate him from this beautiful AKM... That's a Century International Arms-imported Zastava M70AB2 (automatska puška model 70B) Yugo with the underfold stock and grenade launcher capability (sights, I also have the grenade launcher attachment as well). I got it at a local gun show and I still see 'em for ~$500. I highly recommend a Yugo, they are built on the 1.6mm receiver over the standard 1.0mm of the standard Kalashnikov, which makes it a bit more accurate. It does not have a chrome lined bore, but that hasn't been a problem with any of the from what I've read and experienced. Another nice thing about the Yugos is that they hold the bolt open after the last shot has been fired (but you have to use Yugo mags for that to work). It also has an elongated upper handguard over the standard AK, which provides better protection for the gas tube. If you go for a Century, make sure the front sight isn't canted. Many are (to include mine), and I had to send it back to them to correct. Otherwise, it is one helluva shooter! And the bayonet is a modern AK-74 Bulgarian, it fits on AKMs as well. I have a traditional AK bayonet on my Norinco Type 56 AKM. Cheers! M2

BigFreddie Good info, and I agree with you; but my AKs are not my firstline self-defense weapons. My Mossberg Persuader has a 120-lumen SureFire 6P and laser sight on it, and is loaded with 3" magnum 00-buckshot. It is what I would grab first if I heard someone breaking into the house, messing with the car, campaigning for Obama, etc... And again you are correct on the state residency thing. Heck, our Canadian liaison officer here in San Antonio was recently able to purchase a Para PDA despite it not being legal to own in his home country. He had to go through a little paperwork, but he got it done relatively easily. But Texas is a far cry from Kommifornia. Honestly, I don't think Kommifornia has the ability to reach out and touch dc58, and I don't think there is any interstate issue; but his buddy is taking a big risk and if the state wanted to press the issue through the Fed, he may get some unwanted heat as well. I thought the same thing at first, but a strawman purchase is one where this arrangement is made at the time of the sale of the weapon. In other words, dc58 bought the gun knowingly to sell it to his bud in Kommifornia. However, as that was not the case, technically it isn't a strawman purchase. However, depending on the time he has had the AR, it could still give the impression that this was his intent; and that is one perception I would steer far away from, as both would be charged with it: According to Federal law: Now I believe that addresses a business sale where the two individuals do not know each other previously (thus requiring an FFL); but for a private sale is a different animal. However, there are state requirements and you may want to read this over before even considering it (warning: that document is from an anti-gun organization; but the information appears to be legitimately researched and the anti-gun bias doesn't start until the end of it). I would also strongly recommend contacting a lawyer who specializes in gun laws in your state, and your bud does in the same in Kommifornia. But, the bottom line is there is a potential for much trouble in doing this. You may be able to legally make the transfer, but he could get in trouble bringing the weapon into the gun-unfriendly state of Kommifornia and that someone could be linked back to you as it was an interstate arms transfer and your name is tied to the weapon. Personally, I would steer clear of it; but if you want to risk getting sent to Federal Pound-Me-In-The-Ass prison , then go for it! And remember that any felony conviction means you most likely will never be able to legally possess a weapon again! Cheers! M2

I don't have any rails on my AKs, that's just my preference but if I were to put any on, siderails would be the way I'd go. I am not big into hanging a lot of stuff off of my rifles (shotguns are a different story), so my AKs are near stock. About all I've done was swap some sights out on my Yugo, and outside of that besides cycling ammo through them, the only thing I've really done was bought accessories (slings, bayonets, grenade launchers, etc). I agree with busdriver, if the Demos win next month expect the Clinton AWB to return. Mr Change has already expressed his intent to invoke it, and the Democratic majority will gladly support it. Get your grandfathered weapons today, as well as ammo; as after next month I expect the prices to rocket! And I don't expect that to be limited to assault rifles; so mappleby, go get that XD ASAP! I've not shot a PT1911, but I have heard a lot of great things about them. A good gun for the price. You can probably get better info at M1911.org As for the FFL collecting state taxes, it is plausible. You may also have to pay a background check or other transfer-related fees. Be prepared for increases in ammo as well. That is why some of us went with a caliber of assault rifle that has a greater stockpile of ammo available (i.e. 7.62x39)... Plus, there's nothing more sinister than a AK! Cheers! M2
