Jer1982's going away ceremony
flyboy2181 Whereas that is very sound advice, and we all appreciate folks on here trying to look out for each other, I've talked with Marco and his squadron leadership was not only aware of what was going on, they gave permission beforehand. It sounds like they've covered their bases, so until there is other compelling reasons for removing this thread, we'll let it stand. Cheers! M2

Gun Talk
Picked up a Izhevsk M38 at the show today for $200 out the door with the usual accouterments (sing, ammo pouches, tools and oil can). It has a wartime M38 stock (not like the later ones that had M44 stocks), but it is counterbored. Stiil, M38s are drying up and I needed one for the collection. I used my C&R license and it was a snap, no paperwork other than the receipt I was given. They also kept the copy and will put it on file, so I can order or buy more from the vendor without giving them another copy. It's a great situation, and well worth the $10/year a 03 FFL costs... And JollyFright, you are correct sir, I could afford a SOCMO 16 if I quit buying all these milsurps; but considering I am getting 6-8 rifles for the price of one, I am happy buying these old Russian rifles. Still, if I save up for anything, it will be a S&W .44 Magnum revolver or a M1918 BAR (I've always wanted one!). One of these days I will snag a SOCOM 16 or a LR308, but for the time being I am chasing the old stuff! Cheers! M2

Bad news for you collectors out there, my C&R license arrived today from the BATFE; so I am now on the hunt! It took exactly one month from the day I mailed it to the day it arrived, and I am now in the process of putting my binder together (not really that tough). Next I am going to make a bunch of copies of it, then send it to AIM Surplus, J&G Sales, etc. Actually, I have a '33 Tula Mosin Nagant inbound next week, that'll be my first entry unless I find something at the small gun show tomorrow! And for those of you in the central Texas area, there's a vintage rifle match on 20 December in New Braunfels... Here's the location on Google maps to make nav'ing easy for anyone who might be able to go! Cheers! M2

Holsters in Flight Suits
There was already a thread on holsters, so I merged the two. Also, the person that started that thread has received a warning, as is standard and outlined in Rule #1 is: And it applies to everyone from a new AFROTC freshman to the CSAF (if Norm is on here). Actually, I cut that person a break...take a look at Rule #4! If anyone has heartburn with that, then PM any or all of the mods, or contact BaseOps himself. Otherwise, those are the rules, simple and to the point. Also, I had thought about merging this thread into the 'Gun Talk' one given the caveat that "All Gun Discussions Here;" but will allow this one to stand on its own given most of the discussion there is on personal firearms.

Gun Talk
I was looking at a SOCOM 16 at the gun show this morning, I love 'em but I don't have $1800 laying around for one! So instead I picked up this 1944 Finn Sako M39 for $265! The 'AZF' marking on the receiver indicates the original rifle was captured by Austro-Hungarian forces during WWI (most likely in 1915). The Finns eventually got their hands on it (it may have been one of the 4600 obtained from the Hungarians in 1936) and later rebuilt to M39 specs in 1944, most likely for use (ironically) against the Russian during WWII. The stock is post-war, and the magazine is from Izhevsk but does not match the rest of the rifle. The barrel is not in the greatest shape, it has a little pitting to it; but the Finn barrels are so solid that it probably still shoots better than a stock 91/30 or even a M44. I am happy to add it to my collection, I almost snagged a Westinghouse-build 91 that a guy had but since I recently got the Remington it serves as my US-built Mosin representative. Cheers! M2

I Hate Reflective Belts
Ask and ye shall receive... The genius of these little beauties is that the 'IHRB' is made out of the same reflective material as the belts! I tried to capture that in the pic on the right. To 'get some,' contact Wes at AFSOCWes@aol.com Cheers! M2

Shit, nice score! I've been trying to find an early Tula for the collection. Does it have a round or hexed receiver cover? How's the stock? What does the cartouche look like? If you need help ID'ing the markings on it, try www.7.62x54R.net. Is it counterbored (drop a 7.62x54R down the end of the barrel, if it only drops to the just before the end of the case, and you can see some of the actual bullet, then it hasn't been counterbored. If it drops down below where the casing and bullet meet, it has). Post pics if you can. Cheers! M2

Think bigger picture and you might start to understand why Casey made that comment (and I am not subscribing to any Army conspiracy theory). Rationally, someone has to counterbalanced all the speculation that the hyper-media was spewing in an attempt to be the first to report the news without letting the lack of facts stand in the way. Honestly, I agree with you on the 'wait and see' approach; but it is a little late for that and the only way to get any resemblance of impartiality here is to hammer the claims with an equal dose of the opposite/counter argument. I am lucky as I got to read a lot of information/analysis on this incident that most folks on here don't get a chance to see, and it with that knowledge that I see the logic in the belief that if a determination has to be made with what is known right now, what happened at Hood was not a terrorist attack. But this thread is going in endless loops, so I will make this my final comment and allow everyone else to get one more in as well; at which point the topic will have been adequately schnitzeled and put to rest. Cheers! M2- 2009 Fort Hood Shooting
If my assessment is prematures, then why isn't the article's? I don;t understand the acceptance of one hypothesis while another is ignored. You claim there is all this "evidence" to support the theory that it was a planned terrorist attack supported by AQ or some other organization, where is it? I think it is bandwagoning being driven by a sensationalized media. And for the record I am not saying it was so much the actions of a lone individual as it doesn't appear to be an orchestrated terrorist attack. You don't prove a hypothesis, you disprove it!- Gun Talk
Someone needs to jump on those deals like they were a drunk Pamela Anderson! Pick me up a nice M1 Garand while you're at it! Cheers! M2- 2009 Fort Hood Shooting
Not really, notice the question mark after the label and the byline...- 2009 Fort Hood Shooting
Apparantly you aren't too tuned into the "national dialogue," as this discussion/debate is going on all over the country...- 2009 Fort Hood Shooting
However, since Hassan will be tried under the UCMJ and not civil law, it will be interesting to see how this plea (if used) plays out. Regardless, it does not appear that Hassan was motivated by extreme/radical religious beliefs as some have claimed, given the consideration of this plea; but all will be clearer as he goes before the court martial board...and he explains himself. Either way, I believe it is more important that he pays for the crimes he been charged with (don't forget he's still innocent until proven guilty), and there is a better chance of that through pursing justice via what will be a pretty much cut-and-dry criminal approach than through convoluted allegations of a planned terrorist act.- 2009 Fort Hood Shooting
The press is reporting that Hassan might plead not guilty by reason of insanity. That kinda blows the whole theory behind it being a planned terrorist act right out of the water now, doesn't it? If he intentionally committed the murders in defense of Islam, why negate it through an insanity plea? That will kill any chance of martyrdom he would have had. It also pulls the rug out from under any theories behind his motivations, as that plea simply means he wasn't in his right mind when he committed the shootings. I am sure some will claim he is only trying to save his own neck; but given the promises of such a glorious life after death, why would that concern such a devout Muslim? The 9/11 terrorists are pleading not guilty so they can so that they can air their criticisms of U.S. foreign policy, if Hassan was following their lines, than why didn’t he follow the same tact? I think what we are seeing is the real truth behind this attack…that it was the actions of a deranged individual, and not some planned terrorist operation...- Salutes for Spouses?
Copy, but the "accepted" Air Force terminology to use in such cases is "Noted." Cheers! M2- Salutes for Spouses?
Honestly, I've never understood the argument that gate guards (military or civilian) are "saluting the sticker"...the car isn't commissioned, is it? It's idiotic, you don't salute the Wing Commander or some general's staff car if their not in it, why POVs? The sticker only indicates that the vehicle is registered to an officer, it doesn't mean the occupant is one and unless the person driving it is one, they shouldn't be saluted. It's ridiculous that a spouse or other dependent is rendered a salute they do not deserve, and now that the USAF has gotten rid of base decals (a smart move), hopefully the only people being saluted when they drive through the gate are those that are suppose to be saluted! Kayla It is OK to give them a small wave, a smile and/or a 'thanks'...the wave will not be misconstrued as a salute. "Carry on" is ridiculous; hell, I don't ever recall ever muttering that anytime in my 25 years in uniform. It is too Army/Marine Corps... And see my previous comment as to what I think the whole thing is ridiculous. The only individuals in the Air Force who warrant a salute are commissioned officers... Cheers!
