How many generations of flying in your family?
Dad flew H-34s in Vietnam and H-3s for the Navy Reserve before finishing his career in the Army National Guard flying the mighty H-1 Huey. I'm the first fixed wing military pilot in the family, though all my brothers are in the military--one is an engineer in the Army National Guard and the other is getting his PhD in computer-geekness at AFIT. I think I've finally passed Dad in Air Medals.

USAA
Also used USAA movers advantage to buy and went with a local bank for the mortgage. Now I'm using the movers advantage to sell. I thought both realtors we've been set up with were pretty good.

Taxes, the Deficit/Debt, and the Fiscal Cliff
The Republicans control the majority of the House. That is leverage despite what the President may say, which is exactly why the Framers devised a bicameral legislature with a separate Executive. The President, the House, and the Senate have to reach a compromise and Boehner is not wrong to demand spending cuts for tax hikes.

C-17 Pilot Charged in Training Jump Death
No matter how this ends, I think the Army will have a lot more no-drops in the future. All the airdroppers I know consider this a shot across the bow. No more will, "oh nevermind, that was actually an on-DZ drop...cleared for another" lead to another drop.

Taxes, the Deficit/Debt, and the Fiscal Cliff
Seems like a case of "If I owe the bank $100,000 I have a problem....If I owe the bank $10,000,000 the bank has a problem." Default seems inevitable.

Generals perks exposed... Good read... Thought?
Good point. I don't really have a problem with the executive jets for trans though. It projects power much like Air Force One when you can take your CCDRs from AOR to America for a working lunch and back again the next day. I've heard that Mullens specifically and Navy admirals in general are the most keen on the perks.

General Petraeus resigns amid affair scandal
Was General Petraeus involved with this woman while he was in Afghanistan? Sounds like she was with him during a year of his tour which would have been a violation of GO1B.

SDP (Savings Deposit Program)
Correct. If you do nothing then 120 days after you return from the AOR the money will be returned to your pay account. Unless you need the money you should just leave it there for the next quarter to get that last $83 in interest.

Promotion and PRF Information
So what's with the promotion increment for the 03 LAF Major board? 113 out of 2,200+ pin on 1 December. Does it have something to do with the MilPDS Armageddon that's coming next month?

Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) Q&A
Your Roth contributions mirror the allocation you already have set up, you can't make a separate investment allocation for just your Roth TSP.

Discovery Channel crashes a B-727
Indeed. Many times I've briefed "whoever is alive after we land is responsible for cutting off throttles..." Otherwise, I generally assume that I'll be consumed by the fireball.

Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) Q&A
Traditional TSP contributions reduce your taxable income now (contribution is made prior to paying income taxes). Similar to a traditional IRA in that respect. I think it only matters on federal and state income taxes though. Social Security and Medicare taxes are computed on pre-contribution income.

Motorcycle Riders Thread
Good article, despite the SMSgt's moronic statement in the comments. I, too, am glad that the AF has required that I wear a crazy amount of PPE when riding. I've made it part of my riding culture. Just like buckling a seat belt, one shouldn't ride without the proper PPE. Glad to hear you're recovering. You've probably shared this before, but how did a tumbleweed not just pass under the wheels and disintegrate?

And AU OLMP gives you credit for 3 of 7 ACSC tests (everything but test #1 and the 3 Joint tests). Can make for a quick ACSC distance-learning experience once selected for Major.

C-17 Lands at Wrong Airport
C'mon, you're a pilot and you're expected to feed the aircraft commander and your squadron commander proper information regardless of their rank. It's this mentality that creates an atmosphere where a copilot is too afraid to speak up and say, "hey, I don't think this is MacDill AFB, sir." If you're a qualified pilot, your crew and your leadership deserve better than this.
