Quarterly FOD Council is by far the most ridiculous thing in the Air Force. Pictures of all the FOD that was found and then awards for finding FOD. Then bragging that it has been 6 years since we had a FOD incident...on a base that only has planes that intentionally land on gravel.

The solution isn't as obvious as the A-word for pilots, but there are opportunities out there. I know a few guys who have used their post 9/11 GI Bill to go to med school or to get a MBA. There's always civilian SPO and ACC/HAF requirements jobs. The UAV world is exploding quickly. I was offered jobs as a systems engineer and in a flight test department of a defense contractor when I was briefly considering getting out. There's a few of us with the FAA ratings to go into the civilian flying world as well. It turns out that smart people who communicate well and can work as part of a team will usually land on their feet. Edit: speeling

Gun sales have been on the rise for a while, just before the election (October) the number of background checks on people applying to buy guns--considered an indicator of future sales--increased by 18.4%, and it's not all about the threat of an assault weapons ban because a large number of those sales are for handguns which would be unaffected by it. In truth, it's incidents like what happened in Newtown that cause people to realize they cannot depend on others for their own safety, causing them to seek other means to protect themselves, their families and their property. Despite what morons like Feinstein think, the majority of Americans do believe in the Second Amendment and understand that more restrictions will not prevent a similar incident from happening again. If anything, the argument that MORE armed citizens might be a greater deterrent is lost on them as they don't understand that had an armed citizen been present at the school, the number of victims may have been reduced. Bt that is the problem with our government, after such events they punish law-abiding citizens and give criminals even more opportunity to kill. Her face is an assault weapon, let's ban that!* Cheers! California has some of the strictest laws in the country, but in 2010 it had the highest number of gun murders - 1,257, which is 69% (no, I did not make up that percentage) of all murders that year and equivalent to 3.37 per 100,000 people in the state. Even in her own state, Feinstein can't figure out that idiotic legislation is not doing anything about the problem!

Been working for Col Leavitt since she took command of the 4 FW - she has been absolutely amazing. She is genuine in her interactions with Airmen, she asks more questions than any person in charge i've ever met and most of all she is humble. I hope she goes far in this Air Force.

I'm with M2 on the .40 argument. No practical upside compared to 9mm with several drawbacks. I think a lot of people shoot .40 based on ego and hearsay wrt 9mm effectiveness. Just my opinion, though. For you AR guys Palmetto State Armory is selling D&H mags for $90/10. Get 'em while you still can. I'd stock up on pistol mags as well. Mag capacity and online ammo sales seem like pretty easy targets for legislation. Meaningful, common sense changes, know what I mean?

ADCs aren't attached to your command, either -- and that is intentional. It isn't the fear of Command influence that should motivate someone to hire a civilian attorney; it is for their wider range and depth of experience than the SJA prosecutors they will be up against. In my narrow experience in this area, the correct civilian attorney (especially those who are former SJAs) can run circles around most ADCs and SJAs.

Yes, I really, truly believe people who aren't paying any taxes not only don't care about government spending, they want to see the spending increase because it directly benefits them. And when was the last time the republicans were the party of "fiscal conservatism"? Sometime right after Clinton's first election? Neither party has been fiscally conservative for a LONG time. What I'd really love to do is force everyone to pay something. And I would completely stop payroll deductions. People don't even realize they're paying taxes. Force people to write a check, and let them see just what they are really paying. I'm not especially in favor of raising taxes, but I'm not seeing a lot of alternatives to generate the sort of revenues we're going to need to pay off any portion of our national debt and get back to a balanced budget. If we are going to raise taxes, I see no reason NOT to raise them for everyone instead of declaring class warfare and attempting to stick the rich with the entire bill.

For all those Pilots out there Air Drop qualified. Here are a few pointers. During the Pilot brief with the Jumpmasters and DZSO make sure you specify the DZ boundaries according to the AF regs, not the other way around. The Army will screw you if they can. Confirm that the DZSO has conducted at least 3 ADZSO operations in the last six months. Meaning that he assisted a senior DZSO with three jumps. If he has not, and has not been a DZSO prior to your jump, ask for a current DZSO. Confirm that all Jumpmasters and static safety's are current. I know we let noncurrent Jumpmasters release Jumpers to become current, however in order for that to happen the noncurrent jump master is watched by the official Jumpmaster for that pass. And most of all, if the DZSO sounds like its his first time on the radio it probably is, which means he has no idea what he is supposed to be saying and not saying, If he sounds like that, I personally would not drop based on the information from the DZSO is unclear. well Thanks to all those pilots that supported me in the past, I'm glad I was able to be there for Jared and return the favor. What's sad is things like this are going to start affecting people's decision making downrange. All this fiasco is going to do, regardless of the outcome, is make people even more spring loaded to call a "no-drop" whether in training or in the combat zone. Maybe that's OK most of the time, but there will come a time when it could have a negative impact on the mission when it didn't have to come to that. We're in the business of war and people will get hurt, there's no way around that. How far will the risk-averse pendulum swing?

I'm completely against the idea. It is none of my Commanders fucking business what tools I legally own and possess outside of work. They don't get to decide what kind of car I drive or when I get to drive it -- and cars aren't even a Constitutional (and SCOTUS-reaffirmed) personal right. Thinking someone might be at risk of suicide is not in any way an excuse for carte blanche authorization for a Commander to pre-emptively remove one of their natural God-given rights. It is shameful that a 28-year Army Medical Corps officer thinks that treatment of a symptom (ergo, access to firearms) is in any way an effective treatment for what is absolutely a tragedy and an epidemic (military suicides). How about you "medical professionals" use some of that education you have to figure out the actual root cause and treat that instead? Flight Doc: "Captain, I'm aware that you are seeing me complaining of massive bleeding from your hand being cut off, but instead of actually treating the amputation, we are going to tape your mouth shut so you cannot scream in pain and so you won't bother any of your coworkers with your screams.
