Well, I've heard about the feast / famine nature of the Reserves and with the recent hiring freeze of the TDART program, full time employment might be a little harder to find for younger reserve guys like myself for a little bit. I am still cautiously optimistic about getting some type of stable full time employment with my sqn, and would strongly like to do so if able, it seems like a great way to get plugged in to how it all works etc. If required I'll either take my shot at making a living troughing (bumming), or go get an RJ job once eligible for stable income and to keep stacking the flight hours, but for a variety of reasons I want to focus on just learning the airf…

Looking for any civil service Reservists in the know. I'm starting a new federal position next week, but after one week I'm going on Reserve orders (IMA) for 3.5 months. It's not ideal timing but the General over both positions has approved the plan so it is what is for the GS position. My question is in regards to maintaining my federal time/benefits/leave. My understanding is that even if I'm on LWOP status for the duration, the time still counts toward retirement, correct? However, I won't accumulate regular leave or sick leave days during that time. I have heard though that as long as you have "some" time accounted for during each pay period, leave days will con…

Hi everyone, is anyone by chance either with the 163d at March ARB or knows how things are done there? They have RPA Pilot vacancies listed on the website but there's no hiring/application information as to whether they are taking applicants from the street or only qualified pilots. Calls and emails to both the recruiters and unit commander have gone unanswered. Thanks for any information.

Just curious how AFRC handles UPT assignments. Since you cant put down a preference is there a method to where they send you based on HOR? Last year had 3 reserve buddies all get sent to Vance even though they were all from different units..seemed to be the base of choice last year. Just trying to see if I can narrow down where they are sending me..hoping for Columbus. It can only be either XL, CB, or VN haha. If anyone has any info or insight id appreciate it..my recruiter doesnt seem to know.

Hi I'm a 17 year old private pilot who is working on my IR. I'm wondering how important extra ratings are to the ANG/AFRes. I'm not planning on enlisting during college, but Ill probably get good grades. Should I work my tail off to get the money for Multi, Comm, and CFI or should I stop at instrument? Thanks, and sorry if this is in the wrong place. I couldn't find any threads answering this question.

Looking for some guidance on best possible foot forward. The cancelling of the AD board was a punch in the nuts, and seeing as they are projecting no more till 2023 I am trying to make a call. Current situation: 28 years old as of last week. ~90 across the board AFOQT. Current engineering gig at a defense contractor. Been doing it for ~6 years but it is not my purpose in life, mostly good people, awesome product, some a*holes like anywhere else, I’d take a bullet for my boss. He punches out in the fall to retire, and seeing management’s recent maneuvers is making me lose faith that I’ll want to be there after he exits. I’ve got a Masters, dual Aero/M…

I've seen some similar topics, but want to run by specific situation but all of you. I've been trying to get hired by an ANG fighter unit for going on 5 years. ~18 rushes and ~50 apps later, I've come up with nothing. I'm of the mindset of fighters or bust (I know, I know), and as such, have started the process to enlist in one of my dream units. Now, the paperwork has already started, so the die is cast on some level, but I guess I want to know if I just shot myself in the foot? Background: Legacy FO 5k+ hours (not that it matters) Bachelors with a 3.8 GPA AFOQT: P99 CSO99 ABM96 ACAD70 VERB79 QUANT56 PCSM: 94

Hello guys, I'm a 21 year old freshmen, and interested in becoming a KC-10 pilot. I live in NJ, where the 108th refueling wing resides... My plan so far is to enlist as a boom operator. After technical training, I will utilize the gi benifits to attend Mercer county college which has an 'Aviation Flight Program'. Every certificate has its flight fees, something I'm assuming the gi bill may cover, but honestly not really sure... The total cost of there 2 year program is about 28-32 k according to there flight coordinator. Anyways, I will later transfer to Embry-Riddle worldwide, and then finally apply for a pilot position my junior/senior year. What do you guys t…

Good evening everyone! I am a cadet in AFROTC and got picked up by the unsponsored Reserve Rated Board last Fall. Since then I have been applying to and rushing squadrons, but I am not sponsored yet. My dream has always been the CAS mission; however, I have not landed an interview with a fighter squadron (largely do to my scores). Initially I did not have my PPL and only had 7 flight hours, so this summer I got my PPL and I am up to 62 flight hours. My PCSM is 69 with an AFOQT pilot score of 73; I did not have any flight experience when I took the AFOQT. I am scheduled to retake the AFOQT soon, but my AFROTC cadre have asked me multiple times if I am sure I want to retake…

I know that in the guard, every 90 days of title 10 order backs up the date you start collecting retirement. so for guard babies, they might have as much as 4-5 years and can start collecting way earlier. how about for a guy that palace chases, has been on active duty for 12 or so years and then goes into the guard. does any of our active duty time (deployments, formal schools) also count towards that and back up the date i can start drawing retirement pay? someone said no but i asked its like getting a signing bonus, usually it depends on the person you talk to and the way the regs are interpreted. is this an in depth researched fact? its just weird a guard guy would get…

a little off topic question, but I've been watching some thunderbird airshows on YouTube and it got me thinking.. I believe airshow teams like the blues and tbirds are active duty only, but do the tbirds hire fighter pilots from the reserves or ANG? I did a search and according to google in the past I believe there has been only 3 ANG fighter pilots that have been selected. here's the twist. even though they were current enlisted in the guard, they all came from an AD AF background. ultimately my question is, can you still get picked up on the tbirds without any AD service? TIA, wikz.

Thinking about transitioning to the Reserves as an IP for the T6. In the application it states that if selected, instead of the traditional “1 weekend a month/ 2 weeks a year” as an AETC IP I would be required to work 6 days a month. Anyone currently an IP at a UPT base got any info on this? Also trying to work as an airline pilot as my full time but worried about the commute. For those of you in the airline industry how do you manage the commute? Thanks!

Hi Guys, I was recently accepted to AD OTS with a pilot slot and a class date of mid 2007. However, after talking to another OTS guy about flying in the ANG, I am leaning in that direction :D . My question is, can I drop an AD UPT slot and then accept an ANG UPT slot? I remember reading something about not ever being able to attend UPT if you had declined a slot in the past. Also, if I go AD, how long is it before I can switch to an ANG unit? Do I need to fulfill the 10 yr commitment first? Thanks. Robert

For guard guys, can you tell me the process/timeline for date of rank and pay(or backpay). For example, once the PV has been approved by SecDef, is that your new DOR? After that it has to be passed on to the National Guard Bureau? How long does that process usually take? Is it after the NGB approves it that you actually start getting paid at new rank? Thanks

Is there anyone who is prior service (not rated) and signed up for the TDART program? Were you able to get a waiver to start at something higher than a GS-9, or possibly a GS-9 but a higher step? Im a prior non rated Capt coming from AD and a few months from UPT graduation and also pinning on Maj. The idea of going from full time Maj pay to GS-9 is not ideal. Ill need 300 MWS hrs before going to GS-11 and then 750 before going to 12.

So I'm running into a bit of an issue at work. I'm a GS employee for USAF (not an ART) and I'm now being told that if I want to do reserve work and not use Mil Leave (LM) then I have to either burn Annual Leave or go on LWOP (Civilian). I've been coding my leave time as KG - Military Furlough because that is the only other military code besides LM in the ATAAPS system and the only code that will then utilize LWOP-US. Primary reason I am concerned is if I use LWOP vs LWOP-US (aka Military LWOP) it starts to negatively impact my benefits, step increases, etc because I will be coded in the civilian system as Leave Without Pay...no military designator on there... All the …

I'm not sure if this belongs here but I didn't want to flood the "What Are My Chances" forum with this since my AFOQT isn't until September, and I'm not even done with school. Anyway, I've managed to make this life-goal of mine about as difficult as it can get through a combination of delays, procrastination, and despondency. I've mostly made up for all of that, and I'm about 90% of the way there now, but I fear I may end up being too late in the end. Like the title says, I'm feeling pretty discouraged and really just hoping to hear some words of wisdom from someone more experienced. I've been working hard to get my PPL and finish college the last few months. I'…

Hi, For example, HIANG has three squadrons under its one 154th Wing. Let's say you get picked up by the unit and they give you a C-17 slot and you go to UPT and return to fly the C-17. The question: Is it relatively easy to transfer over to a different squadron after a few years in say the C-17 if you wanted to then fly the F-22 or KC-135 for whatever reason? I understand the process of transferring different ANG units, but am confused on the protocol of changing airframes within the same unit. Thanks

I'm currently Active Duty and in talks with an ANG unit, but have a question I keep getting different answer to: What length of a commitment do I incur if I transition to the ANG via Palace Front as an officer? The ANG recruiter is telling me 4 years, but that sounds high considering the payback for Palace Chase is 3x your remaining ADSC and Palace Fronting (from my understanding) is just a transition to the ANG with no commitment since I've served out my ADSC contract. For some context, I'm in a flying position and would be filling a flying position in the same aircraft/crew position that I currently fly with no additional training required. Thanks in advance…
