Hello all, It's been a while since I've been here, but I've put in my packet for a boom operator position in a local tanker squadron. They recently got back to me and invited me to go to an "orientation" What can I expect? Is it going to be a group or individidual thing? I'm thinking it's a walk around the hangar and then a meet & greet. What should I wear? I'm thinking "business casual" type stuff with appropriate tennis shoes because we may be on a flightline. Any tips besides study up on the aircraft/unit? -Thanks

When I separated from active duty I received a DD214 and know I have the right to file a disability claim for anything in my medical record while on active duty. I also received one for my last deployment and will do the same when I retire from the guard. My question is, can anything that happens during AT/AFTP/drill go on my disability form as well? Or is it just for extended active duty/mobilization i.e. deployments? If I never deploy again and missed getting something in my medical record am I pretty much hosed? thanks

Didn't see a dedicated thread so... here we go. Anyone have insight if this requirement is going to survive the pilot crisis? Anyone want to start a movement for the ARC (guard & reserve) to have their own course that actually functions online via one website and is relevant to TR's that have other jobs? Anyone know anyone that said screw it and left because it's easier to do that than force feeding BS? Cheers

Thinking about switching my airline career to aerial firefighting down the road. Are there any guard/reserve squadrons that participate in aerial firefighting? I have my radar on the C130 squadron in Reno, NV, but no clue if they do that type of flying. They are in close proximity of NorCal though.

Looking for some guidance on best possible foot forward. The cancelling of the AD board was a punch in the nuts, and seeing as they are projecting no more till 2023 I am trying to make a call. Current situation: 28 years old as of last week. ~90 across the board AFOQT. Current engineering gig at a defense contractor. Been doing it for ~6 years but it is not my purpose in life, mostly good people, awesome product, some a*holes like anywhere else, I’d take a bullet for my boss. He punches out in the fall to retire, and seeing management’s recent maneuvers is making me lose faith that I’ll want to be there after he exits. I’ve got a Masters, dual Aero/M…

  6. I'm applying to several Guard units in hopes of flying. My wife is about 1.5 years from graduating as a Nurse Practitioner. Some of the Guard units I'm applying to are not close to major hospitals. Do Mil hospitals employee civilians (specifically Nurse Practitioners)? I've used to search feature for this topic, but I couldn't come up with anything.

  7. So, I'm 17 and am a senior in high school. My goal is to be a pilot in the reserves or ANG and, after doing some extensive research and talking to many recruiters, I've developed A semi cohesive road map on achieving that goal. My plan is to enlist in the AD Air Force a few months after graduation. I'm hoping to enlist for 6 years as to give me so extra cushion time as well as a better starting pay. I'll probably go into some sort of maintenance AFSC although I scored pretty well on the ASVAB so I should be qualified for everything. During my time in the AD Air Force, I Plan on using the benefits such as TA as well as many benefits online military colleges give, to get my…

I went back through 10+ pages of archives here to see if there was a thread I could bring back from the dead. I couldn't find one so I'll make a new one. I just recently transferred from the ANG to an AFRC IMA job. This post and thread will be a place holder for more information when I have more time to sit down and write a novel of my experience with this process. Like anything military personnel/administrative related, it was a nightmare... so far. Hopefully it'll all be worth it. I've got my 20+ years already, but decided I didn't want to fly anymore or do the UTA thing anymore and didn't quite think it was a good idea to retire yet so I decided to try the IM…

Hey everyone, im a newbie here, so pardon my ignorance and please feel free to correct any mistakes of mine. Anyways, I have a few questions for all of you. First off, I wanna know what the Guard is all about. I was in a ROTC program for a year and a half, but decided Active Duty was not for me. However, I still have a desire to be in the AF some way. I always hear that you can do the guard as kind of a part time job. I realize that its not a part time commitment, that you must be willing to sacrafice your life in defense of your country if called upon to do so. However, what is the time frame, from deciding to join, to being done with training and finally whats the t…

Long time lurker here that finally decided to drop a post. I'm finishing up school at UT and hoping to get a Guard slot with the 136th AW. This question goes out to everyone though since I plan on applying to fighters and possibly tankers as well if I can't get a Herk slot. Do ANG guys match up with AD guys in proficiency and general combat readiness? The reason I ask is that if I'm going to be flying around getting shot at, I'd prefer to be as prepared as possible. Thus, if AD guys are typically more prepared, I think I'd prefer to go AD. It seems to me that it would be especially difficult in a guard fighter unit to maintain proficiency, but I guess as long …

Hi guys, been lurking around the forums for a while and have decided it's time to start taking things a bit more seriously. A little bit about myself - I'm beginning my 4th semester out of a 6 semester Bachelors Degree (Construction Engineering - 3.97 cGPA, AGC chapter VP, Pre-Law Club, Competition Leader Student) at a school without AFROTC and at my time of graduation, I will be 20 years old. Ideally, I would like to commission into either the ANG or Active USAF as a CSO/ABM (I know it's not popular, but I'd love to talk to some ABMs about the field as well) or into one of the Engineering/Construction Officer AFSCs. The general consensus I have gathered is to start sp…

  13. Searched around for while and couldn't find a straight answer. I have always assumed than any ANG or AFres unit that held the mission of Aggressor or Training would not hold any UPT boards. That is to say; they would not take on a new guy, and instead look mostly for pilots currently rated and experienced in the unit's air-frame, possibly even only instructor rated pilots. Is this true? There are a lot of units like that and I wanted to know if I should consider these viable candidates to apply for or not. For example, the 149th FW is a Texas ANG unit that flies F-16s but has the mission of training and qualifying F-16 Pilots.

So I am in contact with an AFRC recruiter for their November unsponsored but also reached out to and active duty recruiter for their November board. This recruiter noted that I cannot apply to both and that I need to pick one or the other. Can anyone confirm this?

  15. Hello everyone! I have a question! Is it possible to receive a sponsorship for UPT from a training reserve unit? Such as 43rd FS at tyndall afb who primary mission is to train f-22 pilots, or the 69th fighter squadron out of Arizona that trains f-16 pilots? or can you only get sponsored by units who don't train such as homestead, NAS Dallas, or Utah? I am desperately trying to find a fighter squadron to sponsor me for the up coming board! I have contacted a couple so far! Luckily for me, I am prior service f16 crew chief, and have some great credentials, and also going next month to wright Patterson AFB to receive my flight physical! (got selected as alternate for my unit…

I'm planning on visiting a unit this weekend that I'm applying to. I was told drill starts at 0700 but was unsure when the best time to show up would be and how long to stay? Show up at 0650 and stay all day or a few hours later and stay a couple of hours? I deifinitely don't want to step on any toes while trying to meet everyone and get my name out there but I also don't want it to appear that I'm not interested.

Does anyone have a succinct reference (AFI or otherwise) of what the legal commitment is to your ANG unit? I know we have a legal requirement to attend drill and if you don't show up, the sheriff can pick you up and physically make you attend drill. How about if you come to drill but make no other efforts to stay current? What are the repercussions of that? How does the UPT commitment figure into all of this?

Searched a bit but no good info on how the process works if someone wanted to transfer from an ANG unit to AFRES. Been in the Guard a while but know almost nothing about AFRES. Location of the AFRES base and proximity to family is the motivating factor. Currently rated in a fighter and would be going to another fighter if it happened. Is the process similar to getting hired in the guard? Are there any major drawbacks going to the reserves? Part time vs. Full time work better in one vs. the other?

Alright guys, be kind to me ;) My husband is applying for Guard/Reserve jobs and I am trying to get a grasp on the whole Guard/Reserve world, as opposed to the active duty side... I need a pretty basic understanding (you know, as basic as any military/government explanation can be!) of the difference between an ART job and an AGR job. And for an AGR job, how does the hiring work? Am I correct in understanding that while all applications go through some headquarters/human resources somewhere, the unit and people in the unit are doing the actual hiring and pretty much can pick who they want for the job? Thanks!!

I'm separating from Active Duty but haven't specifically picked a Guard or Reserve Unit. In my searches/ conversations/ interviews, however, I keep getting told to avoid a "Break in Service" as if is a terrible thing and will adversely affect me, but I can't really get a solid explanation as to why. My financial situation allows my wife & I to comfortably take a few months off and travel, researching various units in the meantime. Why can't I be on "IRR" status until I've picked a unit and done the paperwork? How will this hurt my future Guard/Reserve career? Or, for that matter, an Active Duty career should I later decide to join the pilot recall program?

How is the crew chief position in the ANG? Anyone willing to provide some info on what the job is like. My local unit flies fighters but I'm looking for feedback from any airframe. I've read the info listed on about.military.com I'm just looking for someone's opinion on the job. The good and bad. Thanks

I have a question about the Reserves. If I wanted to join the reserves as an officer but I am dating an enlisted NCO how would that workout? Are you really just a civilian when you are not doing your one weekend a month? Could/would she get in trouble? Where she is stationed and where I would do the reserves would not be the same location and possibly in a different state. Please advise....
