Standard assertion that: I looked and decided this merited its own thread, but mods please delete if this is not the consensus. I wanted some opinions on what an ANG unit's conversion back to manned from UAVs might look like. Does big Air Force see these units the same as it does manned units changing missions? That is to say, is a mission change such as this likely even if it's possible? How many UAV units are "future proofing" by sending their studs through full up UPT? Some initial limiting factors -change to the original manned aircraft bed down facilities that would prohibit the return of manned aircraft. -spin up of ops and mx personal giv…

Hey folks, I'm currently a tanker guy in the reserves, but I was considering an IMA job closer to my house. (My commute is killing me) I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a flying commitment for the USAFR? I have been flying since Oct 2010. I know of the ADSC, but does anything like that apply to the reserves? Does anyone have an AFI reference that I could look up? Thanks for the input. EDIT: I did find the AFRCI 36-2102 that addresses the issue. It does seem that even reservists incur a 10 year flying commitment after they get their wings. My new question is this: can I still look for an IMA job and still inter-fly with my current squa…

I've submitted my application to AD Upt board (I'm a newly minted Capt) already, but today an AFRC Col I didn't know kidnapped me after a meeting and told me he heard I was applying for the AD board and I "must" apply for the AFRC flying unit at my base. I hadn't thought much about going reserves to fly, but he made a pretty damn good argument for it. I have a competitive package with good scores and no waivers. Any wise Greybeard advice on this? I don't have enough flight experience to know what I want to fly, but I love the mission and figured being in a cockpit is the best way to go.

Hey everyone, So I reached out to the 39th Flying Training Squadron about this same questions and I am waiting to hear back. Out of curiosity, can a UPT training squadron sponsor someone for UPT? Ideally, I would like to be an IP for the USAF, and go through UPT then PIT. I am currently an aviation educator (CFI/CFII/MEI and college classes for a university,) and even after 4+ years of doing it, I still love it. Additional info (if it helps;) MEd in Curriculum and Teaching will be done in March, GPA 4.0/4.0. BSc Aeronautics, ERAU, GPA 3.6 I recently turned 28. PSCM 99, although, I would like to take the AFOQT again to improve my verbal…

I'll be on a mob for the first time second-half of FY22 (1 Apr - 30 Sep) and I'm looking for an official reference one way or the other on if I can take OCONUS leave. I'm an RPA pilot so the "mobilization" is at our home station flying our normal combat line, so no change in location/mission/etc. from the normal federal MPA orders we work all the time. I had initially thought it'd be no different than taking leave while on federal orders any other time, but other folks have raised their eyebrows and said to try to find out for sure. Looking to have a solid reg to point to before I either book expensive tickets to Europe or rolex the family vacation to another time. T…

For anyone here who left for UPT training holding only a PPL or similar, what were your civilian ratings / job opportunities afterward returning home and going part time status? From what I read online, it sounds like commercial and instrument ratings are awarded after an FAA proficiency test. I'd love to hear how many hours you all came home with after UPT, air frame training, and seasoning orders. All PIC time? What jobs were available with your experience level? I understand this will vary greatly between aircraft, and even down to the individual unit but I'd like to start a conversation and hear from anyone willing to share. For context, I am applying to units an…

Besides the ANG being a (primarily) state group and the AFRC being a federal group, what are the day-to-day differences between the two? I'm going through the interview process and have some stuff coming up with both. I understand that the ANG unit hires you and you go through the NGB whereas the AFRC sponsors you and then you go to a board sometime during the year. Also, AMS for ANG and (recently) all OTS for the AFRC. After the hiring process, everything I've read shows them to be similar as far as UPT, SERE and then seasoning at your unit. What other differences have you found? In the thread talking about the (rumors of) AFRC absorbing the ANG I read that the…

Question for any AGR's: If you are hired in to a "Major" position as a TR Major, are you not eligible for promotion to LTC (w/7 years in grade as Maj) while in that position (ie. do you have to wait until that 4 year AGR tour is over and find a LTC position to actually Pin-on LTC)? Also....any idea if the bonus is available to UAS pilots? Thanks

Quick question, if you are passed over twice in the IRR, and you are separated from IRR, are you eligible for any military service after that including the ANG?

Has anyone getting ready to retire had their age 60 rollback calculated by MPF? Did they do it correctly? Or did you have to dig out every set of orders you ever did since 2008? On another note there is a change to allow the age 60 rollback to go as far back as age 50 now, not 55. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2

I just got notified I was selected in the AFRC board, and I am very excited. I want to start planning arrangements. I'm currently in a lease in a rental house, and I am about to buy a house. I am trying to figure out how it plays out when I get orders. I was hired as a traditional reservist so I will go back to being a part timer after training, and I will continue to live in another city then my squadron. Will I be given any kind of housing allowance for my current residence when I get orders for training? Does it make sense to go ahead and buy my house or will I need to cut all my liabilities from my current city while I am gone? I asked my squadron contact, and he s…

Hi everyone, I'm currently an active duty Navy FA-18F pilot, a little more than 2/3 of the way through my first sea tour (first ops tour, in your parlance). Lately, I've started to think about some potential options for further down the road and one thing I'm giving some thought to is a transition to the Guard or Air Force Reserves. I've got a few questions on that process. My first concern has to do with the Air Force flight physical. By Navy standards, I'm color-normal. In other words, I can pass a FALANT test (aka Optec 9000, I think?) no problem. The PIP tests, not so much. I understand that the USAF does not accept or even possess FALANT machines for co…

So I'm an enlisted reservist out of Nellis and started talking to the helicopter rescue unit at Patrick about putting a pilot package in next year. I live in Florida roughly an hour from the base and commute to Nellis for drill because I like my job and the unit. My Chief told me today I can do a drill weekend with that unit on orders which is great. I'd be in uniform as a SSgt. That being said do any of you see a problem with me hanging out with the pilots if I'm in uniform? Thoughts?

I know this topic is taboo but I would like to know. Of course I am planning on great success but it will be good to know what the implications are if any of the above happen in the training pipeline, rather than be naive to the situation and have something unexpected come up if there is a situation. Do the Reserves basically decide what they get to do with you? If you drop before inprocessing are your just out of the system? If you have issues at OTS are you just a Reserve staff sergeant for a few years? If you wash out of UPT can you essentially just pack it up and go home or will they assign you another job? Just curious. Thanks!

(Edited for link to PDF) The 163rd Fighter Squadron out of Fort Wayne, IN (ANG, A-10C) will have an open application window for Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) from Dec 1, 2016 through Feb 28, 2017. I'm a prior service active duty U.S. Army Aviation CPT RC-12/C-12 driver and current part-time Army National Guard CW2 C-12 IP/IFE/MTP. I fly ISR King Airs as a DoD Contractor overseas on a 60 on/60 off rotating schedule for my full time job and live in Vermont. Looking to cross over into the Blue to get my commission back and finish up the remainder of my military drilling career in the ANG. If possible, I'd like to chat with someone in the know about the 152nd AOG or flying MQ-9 RPAs in the 174th Attack Wing (NYANG). I have lots of prior CAOC, LNO, staff officer and overseas ISR piloting experience. I've tried both e-mailing and calling an ANG recruiter, but haven'…

So I've been trying to figure out my pay during OTS, UPT, and as a traditional reservist. Forgive me if some of these questions sound dumb, coming from the civ word and still figuring out the mil pay structure. Wondering If any one still in UPT, or just finished could give me an idea to some of the questions below. My civ employer offer's differential pay for long term and short term deployments. They consider anything under 30 days short term and over 30 days extended. They only pay dif pay for 12 months of any extended deployment. Question: Will OTS and UPT be separate orders? Or will I be considered "deployed" from day 1 of OTS until I become a traditional reservi…

Hello all, I am an avid "lingerer" of this forum and have a few questions about joining the ANG or AFRES as a pilot. I apologize if these questions have already been answered or I am posting in the wrong thread. I had no luck in my search and am seeking some guidance. I am a 24 yo graduate with an engineering degree from Texas A&M University and a little over 20 hours of flight time. I am on schedule to get my PPL by the end of the year, in the case my examiner doesn't bend me over on my check ride. Included in my package are many hours of leadership and volunteer experience. The bump that I have run into is the acuity of my eyes. I just went through my annual c…
