I am wondering what kinds of non flying jobs you reserve guys might have within your units that help support you (and your family) in addition to flight time. Or what jobs do you have outside of the units that allow you time to fly. Or do you find that you get enough flight time to not have to worry about a second job. In college I majored in International Studies. Basically that consists of politics, economics, history, literature, geography etc. Typically it was more of an analytical work. I would be given a country to study, then forcast how it would react politically, economically etc to the actions of neighboring countries and world events as a whole. Are t…

Just ran across this on YouTube and thought some of you might find it interesting (Warning: it's about an hour long) Oh, he also mentions Lanchester bombers when he means Lancaster bombers, but realize that the Lanchester was a civilian version of the same airplane; seems like an honest mistake.

Is there a single agency that handles this for the whole US government? I had a question about security clearances (not so much AF at this point, more working for the government) and was wondering if anyone here knew someone I could call about it. Please PM me. Thanks. P.S. Derka derka. (just before anyone else says it) [ 23. November 2006, 13:23: Message edited by: PapaJu ]

Can anyone provide a brief overview of how the Air Force mitigates against low-level bird strikes? I seem to recall from a trip to Seymour Johnson that there was a service which highlighted low-level routes where birds might be more prevalent at a given time of the year. I also believe that there was a grading system for risk. Are these systems still in effect, and are they integrated into Falcon View or similar? Is it down to the discretion of the mission commander to avoid these, or are the AFIs that mandate flagged areas be avoided? TIA

This is a couple months old, but I just had it sent to me. Seeing a fallen soldier home There is more to the article where the author does a good job following up with Lance Cpl. Wilson's parents, but this first half just blows me away. What in the world in your life could be so important that you can't give up your seat to a family who is trying to get home to their son's funeral? This showcases what is wrong with people these days. It's too bad there aren't more folks out there like the author.

  7. Does anyone have experience dealing with getting continuation after a DNP? Some NJP is in the picture from a few years ago that I thought I had recovered from, but that still played into a DNP for my first look at O-5. I’m assuming it’s not going to change next year. I’ve assumed I would get double passed over, but I was expecting a Promote at least. Does a DNP likely mean a DNP next year and how does that affect continuation? Thanks for any experiences.

I'm about to get passed over for a 2nd time to Major. I've done a lot of research, but I just want some back up to see if my thinking is correct. I've asked numerous people in MPF these questions and I get different answers each time... Being an 11F, will I most likely be offered continuation to 20 years? Could it possibly be for a shorter period? If I turn down continuation to 20 years, I will have to separate within 6 months. I understand that I will not receive invol sep pay, but will I receive the other benefits of invol sep such as the commissary/bx privileges, the medical coverage, and the HHG storage? Is there any possible way to let them know that …

I know there's a bunch of so called "military websites" for selling your home and I've looked at a few but I'm curious if anybody has had any luck with this sort of thing? My Realtor said if I found the buyer he would do everything for .5% so if there are any credible sites out there I'd like to give it a try.

Actually, officers can sell back leave. You can only sell back 60 days of leave in a career. This becomes a player when transitioning to the ANG/AFRC. When you do a month MPA tour, you accumulate 2.5 days of leave, which will automatically get sold back at the end of the tour. If you sold back all 60 days at the end of Active Duty, you're SOL, so they say. I sold back 30 days at the end of AD and took the rest as terminal leave before joining the ANG. Nowhere else are you going to get this much paid vacation time this quick. And if you start UPT in November, let's say, and you get 2 weeks off in December for Xmas break, they'll let you "go in the hole" or car…

  12. The two leading members of the Senate Armed Services Committee have formally requested an estimate of the cost of terminating the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, according to a letter addressed to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta today. The letter comes from Sens. Carl Levin (D-MI) and John McCain (R-AZ), the chairman and ranking member of the committee, respectively. McCain has been especially critical of the F-35 program in recent months and failed in an effort to cancel the program during the committee's recent mark-up of the fiscal year 2012 defense authorization bill. In their letter, Levin and McCain request more information from the Defense Department about …

I searched but couldn't find any good info. Question for the masses... I've been in for 4 years, met my service obligation, and am planning to get out. I was going to separate under the "Completed ADSC" option but just recieved an assignment RIP and now have the option of separating under the 7-Day Option (AKA "Decline PCS or Assignment"). MPF says there is no difference when choosing which provision to separate under. However, I'm not so eaily convinced. Does anyone have any gouge on which option to chose? Does it matter for your DD214? I'm suffering at the 'Deid so any help would be much appreciated!

Does anyone have any experience with receiving separation pay and moving from a state with no taxes to one with? I've seen various discussions about people receiving their pay after the new year so they get to put it on the next year's taxes, which implies when you receive it is what matters, not when it was earned? The issue I may have is I'm currently a Florida resident with no state taxes, but may take a job in California, and start before my separation date, or at least before I receive my final pay with separation pay. So looking at partial year tax laws, I would pay California taxes on the new job, and not my other military pay for the year...but what about the o…

I know a lot of it is probably classified, but I do not know a whole lot about SERE other than what I've seen portrayed in Hollywood. Is it really as much of a haze as I've heard that it is? Is there a high attrition rate? Just generally trying to get some information and ask for other resources that any of you may have. Thanks a lot!

well this is one way to get out early I guess... https://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16585140/ SAN ANTONIO - "Drop and give me 20!" is something you might hear Air Force Staff Sgt. Michelle Manhart yell to airmen trainees at Lackland Air Force Base. Drop her trousers is what Manhart did for Playboy magazine, and now it's landed her in trouble with the military. "Of what I did, nothing is wrong so I didn't anticipate anything, of course," Manhart said Thursday of the pictorial. "I didn't do anything wrong so I didn't think it would be a major issue." In a six-page spread in February's issue, hitting newsstands this week, Manhart is photographed in uniform yelling and …

Do strike eagle crews generally fly together or do different pilots fly with different WSOs all the time? How does CRM work in the jet? Is it always the pilot "just" flying and the WSO running the radar? Just trying to get an idea of how most sorties go.

I thought I'd start a thread on USAF policies that don't make a heck of a lot of sense as a place where people can go to discuss "genius" ideas from leadership and ideas that aren't so bad. This is not meant as criticism of leadership, but as a place to discuss solutions to problems. To start things off: Bad idea: Reorganizing the Maintenance units under Operations (Ops guys don't need to focus on wrench turning and wrench turners don't need to focus on planning for a strike. It's the Wing Commander's job to balance the two while the Group Commanders can focus on accomplishing their marching orders) Good idea: Rethinking this and keeping the units the way they curr…
