Just found out yesterday i'll be doing casual and IFT at Wright Patt. Not as sexy as somewhere in florida, and no damn back seat rides, but kinda sweet to get to do ift where the wright brothers flew. Anyways any gouge on Wright Patt would be appreciated, especially if there is someone who knows a cool job for a new Lt. to try and swing (since there are no damn planes there that arent in the museum!!!)

If any othe Lt's are goin let me know and if we can live off base, we can get rooms near serority row

Actually there are aircraft stationed there @ FFO. The 54th Airlift Squadron...flies the mighty C-21. They have about 9 or 10 jets right now and about 50 or so pilots. In my biased opinion, I think that casual guys have it made in C-21 units...not only do they not have to do much, if anything, but they can ride along any C-21 missions. Also, there are occasionally a 141 or two that fly out to Hawaii...so you could hop on those space-a. Wright Pat isn't all that bad of an assignment. Enjoy.

Springfield Ang is about 20 miles away. They are a training base and have quite a few D models. Also if you get bored you could come over to Rickenbacker (1 hour drive) and fly with the tankers. Or mansfield/youngstown 130s. If you are looking to catch a flight or two, there are a lot of oppertunities around wright pat. Although these are all guard/reserve units, and you might not want to fly with them as you might get brain washed and want to come to the dark side. I know some of the guys at Springfield and they are usually pretty good about trying to get people rides. If you can get an altitude chamber ride you would stand a better chance yet. Hey one more thing, if you can get into hanger 18 you should be able to take some pics of the aliens they have stored there...yea right..

I'm at Springfield for RTU right now, so PM me and we'll see what you can get. If anything you can at least hang out with some dudes that just went thru UPT so you can get a taste of what it's like. I'm not sure where you can get your chamber training but they do have a 'fuge here...muahahaha

Mambo,

The brothers Wright traveled to NC to land on the soft sand and use the ocean wind, but they are the darlin' sons of Dayton Ohio (motto, "if it aint fried, we don't eat it" or "at least we don't live in Kentucky")

Future,

I'm currently at WPAFB, awaiting pilot training (Moody/July 06). I work in the Research Labs (I'm not here casual, just got picked up for the AD board) The area isn't too bad, some decent appartments/base housing is decent if your married. If you've got any specific questions PM me and I'll let you know.

Take care/Good Luck!

As somebody currently at WP....BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Seriously, it's not that bad. Lots of outdoors stuff to do. If you're a night life type of person, join the Just Say No to Dayton Campaign's Coalition of the Willing. It's quite possibly the mother of all coalitions. Cinci, Columbus, Indy, and Cleveland are all within driving distance.

The Wright brothers did some flying at Kitty Hawk (for winds/density altitude). Later research was done at Huffman Prairie Flying Field, where we conveniently built a golf course.

Lots of early research was done at Wright Field (now Area B) until they moved that to the desert. AFRL still lives here, but no flight test.

Try and get an ANG F-16 ride.

Oh, and sorry, there isn't a sorority row to be found.

PM me if you want any more Dayton gouge (where to live, where the aliens are, etc.).

Thread revival time gents... You can’t say I didn't search (just maybe not well).

A few of us Marine SNA's are being sent to WPAFB in August for a week at a time to be guinea pigs test subjects for, "...Altitude Chamber tests to help with the study of altitude influence in the F-22 Fighter.Actually we just know we are going to Dayton, OH. I can only guess that means WPAFB.

I had a few questions I was hoping you all could answer. First. Anybody know anything about this study? Second. What is there fun to do around there? We have not been given any details about the trip, only that it is funded by the Air Force.

I already know about the museum and definitely plan on checking that out. I see the 445th Airlift Wing and the 178th FW over in Springfield but doubt we would have time to go that far. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Im from Dayton so I can try and help with the fun part. Kinda depends on what your scene is but there are really only two good locations to go out on a Friday in the area.

1. The Oregon district - This is in downtown Dayton about 25 minutes from the base when you factor in the time to get on 35 and head into the city. Mostly the combination of drunk college girls and guys from UD and hipsters from who cares because they are hipsters... Lot of bars down there ranging from the Dublin Pub which is a little expensive for an Irish bar to little hole in the wall dive bars.

2. The Greene - This is a new (last 5 years) upscale bar and shopping area off of I-675 in Beavercreek. Takes about 20 minutes from the base to get there. Lots of more higher end (IE higher prices) stores, upscale theme bars (The Pub, Bar Louis, Adobe Gilas), a really good theatre that serves booze, and a lot of nicer restaurants as well as a comedy club that gets major headliners sometimes.

Other than that the only fun thing to do in Dayton is pack a bag and go the hell somewhere else.

What he said! If you're there over the summer, do yourself a favor and drive up to Put-in-Bay over a weekend. You'll thank me later!

If you go to the Oregon District area there are a handful of new brewery's that just opened up that aren't UD/Hipsters. Check out Warped Wing Brewery, Toxic Brew, and 5th Street Brew Pub. You can also grab really good food down in that area from Southpark Tavern which serves a local pizza place's pizza along with great wings and an awesome beer selection (FYI none of those places have a cover charge while places in the actual Oregon district do)

In Beavercreek, right outside Area B's (where the medical stuff is at) you can check out Kings Table..over 40 draft beers and their chicken fingers with signature hot sauce (porn sauce or "side of ass" sauce) is great.

If any of you golf, the Beavercreek Golf Club is a really good course.

If you want to drive 20 miles north and hang out with a bunch of hippies you can check out Yellow Springs (Dave Chappel lives there)...

Over by Wright State (also right outside Area B) you can check out W.O. Wrights....not a grand beer selection but on college night it can be fun...If your wiling to drive down to Cincinnati you can go to one of only 3 of the Haufbrau houses in the world (unless they expanded since the last time I checked)

Those places should entertain you long enough for your TDY I would imagine.

Big 2 on W.O. Wrights. Good drinks and pretty good wing selection.

As an addition, the Fox and Hound routinely has Dave Chappelle stop by Tuesday nights, or rather Wednesday morning, around 1am (from what we were told). Didn't get to Ops Test it, but we ran into him at 2am at The Pub the following night/morning.

Doc W. is a good dude, runs the 'fuge and chambers and the F-22 issue.

The 89 AS flies C-17s in the NE corner of area A. 'Fuge is area B. If you get off base, get a Marriott gov't rate near Fairfield Mall in Beavercreek and walk to Fox and the Hound. The Pub at the Greene is good too at I-675 and Dorothy Lane.

Oregon District is ok, but Put In Bay would be a good escape. Columbus is good as is Cinci.

PM if you wish.

The Test and Presidential Annex by the Area B main Gym is great, just take in ID card, otherwise you get only 40 minutes if you take the school bus shuttle from the Main Museum off base.

Don't forget the Air Force Museum. If you're into aviation, its a pretty goot place to visit. Big, allow several hours.

Thank you for all of the replies. Those suggestions definitely give us a better place to start.

Once we figure out specifics I will probably ask back with some more direct questions.

btw...apparently I reachched my quota for positive votes for the day (2). So, those I didn't get to today will get some positive rep in the future.

Cincinnati guy here.

-Roughly between Dayton and Cincinnati (~45 minutes away?) is Red Stewart Airfield. It's a mom and pop grass strip, where the training fleet is two Cubs, a Champ, a Taylorcraft, Decathlon, and a Stearman. Check it out, it's a great little place. Go get some tailwheel time. If you're there from August 30-31st, their airshow/fly-in/pancake breakfast is going on. As long as VFR wx prevails, they'll have a nice turnout.

-Cincinnati proper is 1 hour south. Reds baseball games are very reasonably priced. On the Cincinnati side, eat/drink at the Moerlein Lager House or Yardhouse. You can walk across the bridge into northern Kentucky. There is a legit Hofbrauhaus there, along with other bars and entertainment. OTR (Over The Rhine) is the up and coming renovated part of downtown, but beware, hipsters abound, and it's still somewhat shady. Nearby downtown, check out: Eli's BBQ (it's BYOB, and great food), the Wurst Bar, or Brew River Gastropub (great beer selection, they brew some of their own), and of course, Cincinnati Skyline Chili (which you can get in Dayton).
