Screw all the judges who just throw them back into the world with zero fucks given.

Yeah, well, people vote for those lenient Superior Court Judges.  And they vote for in support of the Appellate Judges nominated by the governor.

It's the "will of the people"... at least it is here in the DPRK.

I talked to Matt's father on Wednesday.  They knew what the sentence would be and were ready for it to be over with so this Stephenson could get on with spending the rest of his miserable days behind

Yep, or in other states it’s just laziness…”oh they’re the incumbent? Sure, why not”

Excellent.

“It’s a foregone conclusion that at a minimum, this guy is going to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The only question is how many more years there will be in addition to that there will be, and our office’s goal is to get every single of of them,” 23rd Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler said.

DUI/DWI penalties, especially for repeat offenders and first time offenders resulting in severe bodily harm/death, need to be multiple orders of magnitude worse. It is despicable how little punishment DUI offenders receive. Screw all the judges who just throw them back into the world with zero fucks given.

Second offense, permanent loss of license.

You get to be dumb once. After that it's intentional.

From a philosophical standpoint I don't understand life in prison with hundreds of extra years versus the death penalty.  Seems cruel to the offender and unsatisfying for victims. Just kill them.  What am I missing about the utility of this punishment?

I'd vote for that.  With extra penalties if you hurt someone.

Capital punishment is typically reserved for the most heinous crimes, such as premeditated murder or acts of terrorism.

Aggravating factors could include the cruelty of the crime, while mitigating factors might involve the defendant's mental state or lack of prior criminal history.

Oddly enough, the financial cost of capital punishment is also often higher than life imprisonment due to lengthy trials, appeals and the costs associated with maintaining death row facilities.

Lastly, the irreversible nature of the death penalty raises concerns about executing innocent individuals can influence the decision to opt for life imprisonment instead especially in more liberal areas.  That's not the case in Texas.

By the way, it's a moot discussion.  Colorado abolished capital punishment in 2020 for crimes committed after July 1st of that year...

The nation is almost equally split on the matter...24 states still have capital punishment, 23 do not and three have a moratorium on executions at the moment.

That doesn’t do shit. They need to have all vehicles repo’d + jail time; and sure, revoke their license for the principle of it.

Really sad story.  I lived in CO for a while and there were always stories like this.  I remember there was a morning in Golden when a multiple dui offender was blitzed and killed a mother.

im amazed by the number of ppl that I’ve met that have had duis.  The process is a big cash grab.

I'm fine (and in favor of) more punishment based on the outcome of the infraction. But at a minimum I want a permanent loss of license based on the decision.

If a guy gets 2 DUI's for driving his tractor down an empty country road and never hits anyone or anything, he doesn't deserve jail for life. But he shouldn't drive anymore, ever again.

Can the Mods spin this out into a thread called "DUI law" to keep this thread focused on the hero we lost?

I talked to Matt's father on Wednesday.  They knew what the sentence would be and were ready for it to be over with so this Stephenson could get on with spending the rest of his miserable days behind bars and the family could get some closure and move on with their lives.

Watching the Denver7 video was especially difficult, they have video of Matt with his kids walking through the local fair, a giant smile on his face.  10 minutes later their lives would change forever.

The Douche who killed him had a chance to speak at the sentencing, he decided to complain he didn't have a fair trial and showed no remorse for driving with a BAC 3 times the legal limit.

Matt's father was also an Air Force Pilot and he commented on the generosity of the USAF family which raised $169,795 for Matt's family through GoFundMe.

Finally, a special thanks to @Sua Sponte who provided a very special item to Matt's family, thanks to him his children we be able to hear their father's voice for years to come.

I hope this serves as a reminder to all, nothing is guaranteed.  Call your mom, call you dad, never miss a chance to tell your loved ones that you care.

RIP Matt, you will be missed and as long as I am around, you will be remembered.
