I'm a guy who always tries to find the silver lining. The silver lining here is it'll be easier to pick them out of a crowd to spit on. I couldn't tell you what the comm badge looks like from a distance now, but if its this obvious I'll know exactly who to hate.

No no no. Oh, no. No, no-no-no-no. This is a joke right? You made that. Tell me right now you made that. That is not funny. I'm not bullshitting. That is NOT funny.

"THEY" will probably make 17D cyberspace warfare operators RATED and give them flight pay

You're not that far off.

The current iteration of the plan has both 17Ds and 12Ws starting training going through a brief (1 month ish) Intro to EW course. Then they branch off to their respective training programs. Some 17Ds may find themselves in a EC-130 as a 'flying comm/intel dude", though the current plan states he will NOT be rated (though he might receive flight pay). I'm willing to bet he'll need to wear a flight suit all the time as well then.

Cyber is also trying to create this training program with undergrad and graduate courses, something like Cyber 100, Cyber 200, etc. For example, you can't be a Cyber SQ/CC unles you've attended Cyber 300, you can't be a Group/CC or higher unless you've attended Cyber 400, etc. Those are just presented as examples, the hierarchy isn't exactly like that. I hear this is similar to how Space does things. The underlying intent is to container out all the rated guys from leadership positions in the MAJCOM down the road. I suppose some folks on this board might consider that a good thing for them personally.

Though like I've said before, this plan is in constant flux. This was the latest as of a couple weeks ago. Who knows what it will look like in another couple weeks.

From AFA...

Brave New World: The Air Force's fledgling cyber force has developed a roadmap that proposes establishing new career fields for officer and enlisted airmen that would affect some 30,000 active and 2,000 reserve personnel currently working in the cyber realm. The head of Cyber Command (Provisional), Maj. Gen. William Lord, said the new roadmap "outlines our efforts to establish cyberspace operators, specialists, analysts, and developers who grow from a basic understanding of cyberspace doctrine to experts in their respective fields." Per the plan, operators would comprise officer and enlisted airmen who would plan, direct, and execute offensive and defensive actions; specialists would be enlisted communications and information cyber technicians; analysts would include both officer and enlisted intelligence personnel with expertise in cyberspace operations; and developers would also comprise both officers and enlisted members with advanced skills in designing and modifying software and hardware. AFCYBER's initial work focuses on operators and specialists, including two new officer air force specialty codes and 15 new enlisted AFSCs. Work is still ongoing to outline career paths for analysts and developers, expected later this year, and to define professional development for the service's civilian cyber force. "We have a lot of work ahead of us still, but we know the direction we're headed," said Maj. Timothy Franz, AFCYBER chief of force development. In the works, too, is a proposed cyberspace operator badge. Officials last month noted that the command is on track to stand up this fall, while still looking for a permanent location for the headquarters. (For details on the specific AFSC's being cut and created, see AFCYBER report by Karen Petitt.)

Off Topic, but while you are on the topic of missile dudes, I recently had a missile dude tell me that he had over 300 "combat missions" under his belt. When I asked, oh yes, you would be correct, he meant that he had sat over 300 alerts. YGBFSM.

A missileer, by definition, will only ever get to log one 'combat mission' if it ever happens. It will probably be the last combat mission for the world.

Until then, it's just pulling alert, i.e., babysitting bombs.

242 'missions' under North Dakota. One thing I will say from that time was there were some absolutely magnificent 'doofer books.' One guy was a fantastic artist and had an entire saga of an LCC towing LFs under the ground, encountering Soviet counterparts, underground gas lines, electric cables, etc. It was worth the 2+ hour drive in good weather just to read the latest installment.

"One ping only, Dmitri....."

World class porn drawer (sts) as well.

If the flying comm/intel person gets more benefits than our flying crew chiefs, I may just have to buy a flamethrower...

Speaking as another former conehead, I can also vouch that no real missileer would talk like that. Within the community, it's simply called "pulling alert," not a "combat mission." It sounds like this particular individual suffers from the "my job is cool, too!" syndrome.

I'd be the first to call the badge retarded, but how does it hurt aircrew heritage? It looks nothing like pilot or navigator wings, except that it has things coming out the sides. Nobody's ever going to mistake a comm guy for a pilot and a comm badge is never, ever going to ruin heritage unless they start giving out aircrew wings. The comm guys don't have to feel completely inferior (though it seems odd that they need a "wing-like" badge for that) to honor aircrew.

But seriously, what the hell were they thinking? At least the stupid spwings don't look like a smooshed bug being electrocuted.

So here is a question....I started as a comm officer, went on to UPT and selected EC-130s. Does this mean now I get to wear my Pilot wings along with the "cyberspace badge" as well as the comm badge? I can't wait to figure out the uniform rules for this crap. Maybe that fast tracks me for the upper echelons of leadership? I guess I need to finish the Master's so I have right pedigree. Oh wait, that is due to change with the change of the Chief of Staff.

It doesn't hurt it in the conventional sense it cheapens it, it equates two completely different career fields. The very fact that the training is called undergraduate this or that is a farce as well. Why don't we just start the campaign to rewrite the Air Force song while we're at it since it is too aircrew centric

Why would you want to have to sew extra shit onto your shit?

Wear whatever you want to...just stop telling me you can only spend 10 minutes helping me since you take lunch at 12. :salut:

Hey, just do us a favor and up your pilot wings on top, eh?

Wings are for flying. Period. If you "fight" in cyberspace you are not flying, no matter what your avatar looks like. They need to quit trying to make every new occupational badge look like pilot wings and make it look like a badge, just like every other non-flyer in the AF. Wings are for flying. If you don't fly, or jump out of something that flies, you shouldn't be wearing wings, even if said wings are made out of lightning bolts.

I guess it really is more difficult to convey sarcasm through text.

My name is Boobs and I'm sporting the pilot wings exclusively and have been since May 04.

Sounds like an AA meeting, or so I've been told. Maybe that works a little better?

Sorry, but the wings train has already left the station. Now we just need to figure out how long it is going to be before they get rid of badges and everyone gets wings.... finance wings, first shirt wings, chicken wings, ect...

Crap like this makes me want to either get the F out so I don't have to deal with it anymore...OR...stay in so I can actually try and do something about it. I have a feeling the first idea will win out.

They don't need a wing like badge to "feel adequate" or whatever...what's wrong with the badge that the comm guys have now? The problem with the space guys and comm guys and whomever else wants to change their current badge to wings is that it lessens the significance of hard earned pilot/nav/abm wings because everyone and their mother has a badge or wings on their chest.

All this coming from a guy where aircrew/jumpers/scuba guys are the only ones with anything on their chest. My .02

EDIT: I'm not saying other jobs like space and comm dudes aren't important

Please don't think that there's some big push within the C&I community to change badges. I have yet to meet a single comm guy who doesn't think the CyWings blows chunks. There's nothing wrong with the current C&I badge; if anything, replacing it will be a needless cost with no real purpose than to satisfy some GO's ego.

Usually 'great ideas' like the CyWings come from the rated generals appointed over support fields to give them 'career broadening'. And when you hear semantically meaningless phrases like "flying in cyberspace"; that's just a lame attempt to put our business in terms pilots understand. It just doesn't work.

I don't think that the missile guys even like the new swings, anyway.

They went back to the pocket rocket.
