  1. If dude was already an IP, he's probably good on PIC hours. And then, what, FEB a guy because he made a safety of flight call the CC didn't like, despite an otherwise unblemished flying record?
    1. The board would laugh and reinstate the pilot immediately.
    2. Everyone in his chain would get embarrassed and look like jackasses.
    3. The CC would lose all trust and credibility with his instructor corps over such a pointless and petty decision to pull the qual.
    4. It'd make a great story at an airline/guard unit interview about being committed to safety in a toxic flying culture. Active duty is notorious for that BS and I assure you being a yes-man PIC is NOT seen as an attractive quality on the outside.

I totally agree with the AWACS crews’ decisions. Your suggestion that he revert to being an FP is what could cause an FEB. I don’t know of anyone who has voluntarily regressed in qualification. The one or two that I know who were Commander Directed downgraded in quals were expected to requal to IP. Failure to upgrade can lead to an FEB.

  2. Mins in UPT (AETC) are ceiling and vis. Mins in ACC are ceiling and vis. Mins in AMC are vis only for straight ins (but most AMC pilots never figure that out and keep spewing this 200-1/2 bullshit). What are the mins to fly this approach in AMC?

Looks like 1800 RVR to me. In the C-17, I’ve never done a T&G in anything other than VMC because we don’t often do instrument approaches on locals.

  3. Got the notice from the company. Shot or fired. Not sure what I’m going to do yet. Leaning towards the J&J if I go that route. Don’t recall anyone here mentioning that they got the J&J.

Barely noticeable side effects the day after for me. Might have been what I ate that day as far as I know. In addition to being only one shot, some studies have shown it’s the most effective for people who already had COVID, but there are so many conflicting studies that who knows anymore.

  4. There’s no reason for anyone to score in the 40s on any section with all the resources available. He needs to do a lot of research online as to how people study for it.

I understand though people without a math background may need more learning time for those sections.

Many of the books are helpful, buy as many as you can to maximize TIMED practice test opportunities. Next, make sure you are reviewing the AFOQT materials from the AFPC site.

They have a practice Table Reading grid. Do that thing 100+ times until he has 10 seconds left over. Switch up the questions order. I would give myself less than the actual allotted time. I ended up with 99/99/99/95/99/75. DM me if you have any questions

You do realize it’s a percentile score? Somebody is bound to score a 40.

  5. Gotta love the newest USAA commercials with Gronk. “It’s only for the military community.” I’m guessing their barrage of ads over the past years has resulted in plenty wasted time of the phone with prospective customers. Maybe advertising to a TV demographic that is largely ineligible for your product is a waste of ad $.

  6. It’s gone so I can’t go back and look, but IIRC it was directed at China, not “Asian persuasion,” since it was in the context of the Wuhan Virus.  I could be wrong, though.  I think we throw around “racist” far too much.

So because it was “directed at China” that makes the slur okay? I’m sure there are millions of people of Chinese descent living in the US and elsewhere who would give you a pass for using it with that explanation.

  7. The cure is worse than the disease.
    Obesity is the #1 comorbidity - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41366-020-0640-5
The CDC just released research that says Body Mass Index in kids doubled during pandemic, making them even more susceptible to a wide rage of illnesses.

Rate of increase doubled, not BMI itself. For BMI to double in a child, that would require a 100% weight gain with no growth in height.

  8. Busch Gardens Director level positions, at a minimum, but that was as of 2008. Many tech companies in the Bay Area also test for “excessive alcohol use,” but again that’s for higher level positions that risk more embarrassment than entry level workers. Do I know of anyone being fired for that? No.

That makes zero sense and seems like it could result in some serious liability should an employee/potential employee decide to sue. A liver enzyme test can determine whether someone drinks or doesn’t. It’s accuracy on gauging how much some one drinks is zero. There are way too many factors to discern that through such a test. Also, who the hell wants to work for Busch gardens, and what sort of hypocrisy are we in that Busch gardens wants to make sure their employees are sober?

  9. I view vaccine mandates the same as drug use and testing. A company is completely within their rights as a private company to randomly test employees for liver enzymes to detect excessive alcohol consumption, and fire you if you drink too much.

    What company has done this?

  10. So I just switched. Still have USAA for banking but not for insurance. I took the emotion out of it and assumed all insurance companies can have customer service issues from time to time. I just compared rates.
For both home & auto I used my existing USAA coverages and got estimates that matched (apples to apples). I got quotes from Progressive, Geico, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual, All State, Farmers and State Farm. All had easy, online systems for adjusting coverage to match my USAA policies. I examined costs for auto/home bundles and separate policies. I also looked at each company's app just to make sure it didn't suck. I ended up choosing Liberty Mutual (31% less than USAA) for auto and Nationwide (35% less than USAA) for home. Bundling with one company did not save money overall.
Surprisingly, in the comparison USAA had the highest rates by far for both -- and it was even close. They were 24% above the average of all the auto quotes and 17% higher than the next closest competitor. For home they were 22% higher than the average and 16% higher than the closest competitor. For bundling they were better as it seems each company tends to have better rates for one or the other. For bundling they were only 9% above average and within 7% of the next closest competitor. However, the bundling appears to be a red herring as none of the companies had a deal anywhere close to the combined rates when using two separate companies.
With my switch I'm saving so much that I decided to increase my coverage. For example, I was able to reduce my auto deductible to just $250 for each vehicle for both comprehensive and collision, zero deductible for glass, twice the liability, add uninsured motorist, add rental car reimbursement, upgraded towing (100 miles free), and "better car replacement" (next year model newer and 15,000 less miles if car is totaled) and still save 26% over my crappy USAA coverage. For home I increased my overall coverage by $265K, reduced my wind/hail deductible to $1500 (USAA was at $12,500), add increased coverage for guns, tools and jewelry (and a bunch of other extras) plus guarantee rebuilding regardless of building cost. That Cadillac coverage still saved me 26% over USAA's crappy coverage.
What I learned is that I've been wasting a lot of money with my loyalty to USAA and false assumptions about their competitiveness. I recall looking into this 15 years ago and found nobody could come close to their rates. Now they are not competitive. The were significantly higher than every other company. It's also not small change. As a bonus, my USAA Subscriber Savings Account (some profit sharing thing) pays out in full with give me over $10K cash. That's actually a nice incentive to switch.

What liability coverage are you carrying? Last time I looked, none of the online quotes would match the $1M bodily injury and $300k for property I have with USAA.

  11. So, as a Commercial AMEL w/complex and HP already (endorsements irrelevant anyways from what I just read), will I also be able to log T-38 time as PIC? Is there some quick guide out there with all of this stuff compiled shortly and sweetly?
Also wondering if graduation from a part 141 aviation school matters in this mix in any way or if the military 750-hour requirement for ®ATP just trumps it

Stop worrying about it. You’ll meet the PIC requirements before you’re eligible for an ATP under any rule. If you go fighters, it’ll all be PIC. If you go heavies, you’ll be able to claim SIC acting as PIC under supervision of the PIC (also called primary time, in Air Force lingo). If you’re a reservist or guardsman, then a restricted (750 hour) ATP might be the way to go, if you want to start your airline career ASAP. If you’re active duty, you should have the 1500 hours for an unrestricted long before your ADSC is up. I had just enough hours after my first C-17 assignment to qualify for an unrestricted.
