Been in the ANG for almost 26 yrs and we have never used the terms IPZ or APZ, at least not in our OG. Position Vacancy is used for an “early” promo. Other than that, it’s typically when a promo packet is put up or you meet ROPMA. Each unit handles their promo timelines differently. We have hired many folks off AD (from USAF, USN, USMC) that had been selected for next rank, but hadn’t pinned, that ended up having to wait to get promoted. Leadership has to think about Force mgmt-how you fit into unit rank structure, how it affects other folks, how long you plan on staying in the ANG. It is very different than AD and there are only so many positions.

Was it? Most of these are comped tix. I would be surprised if anyone paid for them. They were on a suite, not in the stands. At least the local pro teams here provide plenty of comps.

Are you guys growing in place or regionally? Did you say it was defense related?

I thought that is what you meant and I agree with HU&W. If kids were older, then I "might" think about it.

Thx for the input. May be leaving next yr or yr after that, all depends on if they promote me or not (then I'm stuck for 3 yrs). Current life ain't bad-live where I grew up and where all my family is. AGR life is not anything like what you guys describe on AD, so a few more years wouldn't be the worst thing and I work with some great people. As for civilian life, it's the great unknown since I've been doing this for 25+ years. I have a few ideas and will start putting feelers out about 10-12 months from retirement date.

Never really interested me. I love flying, but most of the guys I talk to give the impression they do it for the paycheck. I've sat and listened to their stories for 20+ yrs and I have never walked away with the feeling that I wanted to do it. I wouldn't mind doing some other kind of flying. Dream job would be running some little GA airport.

I am also interested as the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter. I'm almost definitely not going airlines.

Disagree. We have been told our folks are only going to URT. A few yrs ago, they waffled back and forth if they were going to let a few of them go thru UPT and in the end they all went to URT. Our last UPT bubba is now a Capt. Caveat: we do not have a non-RPA airframe on the ramp, so this is likely the reason for URT only.

I believe you are mistaken. SYR had/has an RC-26 in the OG. This is why they can send some guys to UPT. Unless something has changed recently, they have not ever had a chase plane. Only a few of the folks there have flown both and I believe the folks that have are only qual'd in 1 at a time.
