There was a time when actual assimilation was demanded. It would not work out well for an immigrant who didn’t fully assimilate. Fast forward to today when all the soft, ignorant people practically advocate for the exact opposite. Personally, I think there’s a balance between the Ellis Island heyday and current day. That balance is something like you don’t have to change your name, completely erase your heritage, forget your native language, etc. But, you must assimilate to western values and way of life, as well as abide by our laws. We also should not be bending over backwards to placate to what “you” came from. If you don’t like learning English and adapting to American society, then GTFO and go back to wherever you came from.
