  1. Shouldn't that tell the powers that be just how deep the organizational rot has gone? When CSAF and SECAF pull all the WING/CC's in a room and say "Knock it off" and it continues, that is not "Stovepiped thinking", that is a completely broken organization. USAF needs real LEADERSHIP...stand up in front of the room with a baseball bat and knock some sense into these pencil pushing duncewagons. Fire the first couple that don't listen...get back to being WARRIORS. I get it, we need a system to manage people, but when the system becomes more powerful than our ability to grow leaders and project combat power...something is seriously fucking wrong.

  3. Yeah there Cochise, I was actually born in California and lived there until I commissioned into the AF. I didn’t say BART, I said mass transit, which I used a good deal growing up because I didn’t have a car until I went into the AF. Maybe you should Google mass transit to see all that it encompasses other than BART.
  4. The system has built yes men incapable of saying no. If CSAF wants his free thinking approach embraced, he should fire commanders disobeying his orders. Until he does so, his words are as cheap as his predecessors actions. Incentivization is an obvious concept unfortunately lost on our over educated managerial class.

  6. Ehh...I guess it depends upon your leadership. I can assure you, you will never see a pilot being a green dot facilitator in our squadron. We have a MSgt, ops admin chick for that. She also does A LOT of DTS, orders generation, and many other things that make our lives easier. Pretty much worth her weight in gold.

  11. Good thing AFGSC didn't copy both those initiatives. Phoenix/Striker crossflow also hurts the bleeding instructor manning since (on the Striker side at least) the year groups we send are guys who have been instructors for 1-2 years and get crossflow guys who won't upgrade for that same length of time

  14. Before I got a pilot slot, I would've killed to fly a -130. Don't nail doors shut prior to giving them a chance to open. Your life will be infinitely better flying the Herk than flying a couch in your parents' basement. And if you ask the Herk guys, they'll tell you it's the greatest invention since the Wright Flyer. Remember, you're going to be competing against dudes that will do damn near anything to get a shot at UPT, and even the slightest indifference you have won't go unnoticed in an interview. I understand you've got your preferences, but do yourself a favor: crank everything to 11, throw as many darts at the board as possible, see what sticks, be thankful for what you get, and enjoy being an aircrew member if graced with the opportunity. To answer your second question, quite a few people I know commute to their Reserve squadrons, and they make it work, but as a new co-pilot, the kid who's willing to live 5 minutes away from the front gate just to get the chance to pick up trips is going to be more competitive than the commuter. Go all out at the beginning of your career, and then consider throttling back after you've established a name for yourself.
